Well-shaped high quality TMA-A zeolite nanocrystals were synthesized in a mother solution with a composition of Al(i-pro)3: 2.2 TEOS : 2.4 TMAOH : 0.3 NaOH : 200H2O at 90 oC for 3 days using a hydrothermal method and self-assembled monolayers coated on glass substrates by different types of covalent linkages. The average size of the zeolites used was 60~100 nm with an average lattice constant of 24.61 Å. The self-assembled monolayers of zeolite oriented with faces parallel to the glass substrates showed only planes of the forms {h 0 0} with interconnected molecules. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) were used to characterize the synthesized crystals and self-assembly monolayers of TMA-A zeolite with the surface-bound functional groups.

High-quality TMA-A zeolite nonocrystals were synthesized using a hydrothermal method from a Al(i-pro)3 : 2.2 TEOS : 2.4TMAOH : 0.3 NaOH : 200H2O composition. The average size of the zeolite crystal used was 60-130 nm with a lattice constant of 12.389 Å. The well-oriented self-assembled monolayers of zeolite with a face parallel to the glass surface treated with the 4-diisocyanates (DIC-4) showed only planes of the form of {h 0 0} by covalent linkages. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and dynamic light scattering (DLS) were used to characterize the self-assembled monolayers of synthesized zeolite crystals.

Excellent thermal shock resistant materials with low thermal expansion coefficients
2008 Journal of Ceramic Processing Research Vol.9 No.3
The high performance of advanced ceramics, fuel cells, and also precision devices for semiconductor systems have been limited by the problem of thermal stresses induced by the thermal expansion between different materials. To avoid this problem, one of the choices is to develop a low or zero-level thermal expansion material, to be used, for instance in diesel particulate filter applications, in which the original dimension of the material is maintained, without being influenced by thermal shock at high temperatures. It appears that the negative thermal expansion of Al₂TiO5 ceramics are due to the effects of grain boundary microcracking caused by the large thermal expansion anisotropy of the crystal axes of the Al₂TiO5 phase. During a reheating run, the individual crystallites expand at low temperature; thus, the solid volume of the specimen expands into the micro cracks, where as the macroscopic dimensions remain mostly unchanged. As a result, the material expanded very little up to 1000 oC and the micro cracks closed at higher temperatures. This result is closely related to thermal expansion curves that were relatively steep. A characterization of the damage induced by thermal shock was conducted by measuring the evolution of the Young’s modulus using ultrasonic analysis, aided by the density and thermal expansion coefficients.

Well-controlled cubic nanocrystals of TMA-A zeolite with a size of 60~100 nm were synthesized by a hydrothermal method in a solution with a Al(i-pro)3: 2.2 TEOS: 2.4 TMAOH: 0.3 NaOH: 200H2O composition. The single TMA-A nanocrystals has an average lattice constant of 24.61 Å and a surface area of 742.36 m2/g. A thermal treatment of the TMA zeolite crystals resulted in their becoming amorphous above 900 oC. Environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and a DTA/TGA and BET analysis were used to characterize the initial materials and the products obtained after various heat treatments.
