        Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is a widely used technology used to diagnosis osteoporosis and monitor changes in bone mineral density (BMD). The present paper reviews the clinical application of DXA in evaluating osteoporosis, including indications for BMD testing, interpretation of DXA results, diagnosis of osteoporosis, and serial BMD follow up. As the clinical utility of DXA depends on the quality of the scan acquisition, the precision assessment of DXA is also discussed. (Korean J Med 2019;94:268-272)

        언어대비와 개념의 위계성이 아동의 단어학습에 미치는 효과

        The purpose of this study was (1) to investigate whether linguistic contrast helps children map a new word into a specific semantic domain when a new word is introduced, (2) to examine the existence of a hierarchy of domains into which children will place a new word, (3) to examine whether children`s existing lexicons affect how children map a new word. A total of 320 children from 3 to 6 years of age were drawn from Pusan, Korea. The children were divided into one of four age groups. There were 80 children in each age group. In each group, children were randomly assigned to one of four groups; the linguistic contrast group exposed to color, the linguistic contrast group exposed to shape, a label group and control group. All of the children were tested for production and comprehension of the new word. The results of this study were as follows; (1) The linguistic contrast helped children learn the meanings of a new word. Especially, children age 4 or more showed a significant effect for linguistic contrast; however, it was not sufficient to teach 3-year-old the correct, referent of a term. (2) There was a hierarchy of domains into which children mapped a new word. There was no significant effect for domains into which 3-year-old children mapped the new word, but from 4 years of age children showed a preference for assuming a new word refered to an object`s shape rather than its color. (3) Children`s existing lexicon had no effect, on how children comprehend a new word.

      • 남해연안 해양환경수 내의 세균분포

        To know the degree polluted with organic materials in Southern coastal sea of Korea the distributions of total bacteria and pathogenic bacteria of surface water were investigated on 42 sites from 19th to 23rd of August, 1996. And temperature, salinity and chlorophylls were observed in same sites too. The number of viable bacterium was 65 to 2300CFUs/ml. The sea was divided into four areas for convenience’. An average number of bacteria in B area between Namhaedo and Kohung peninsula was 578.9CFUs/ml showing the most polluted of them, and D area of open sea was lowest of 179.2 CFUs/ml. However, the area contaminated with pathogenic bacteria was A between Namhae and Kojedo with 9.6~10.6% of pathogenic to total bacteria. The range of temperatures was 26~29℃ and cold water masses showed around Komundo, Sorido, and Kojedo. The salinity was 28 to 33‰ and the content of chlorophylls was below 4.1㎍/l.

        연구논문 : 위탁급식사와 고객사 간의 관계특성이 관계의 질과 장기지향성에 미치는 영향

        The objective of this study was to examine the effects of relationships between food service companies and their client companies by surveying employees working at cafeterias among a food service companies` client companies. For this purpose, previous research was reviewed, and confirmatory research was conducted using a questionnaire. In the questionnaire survey, the subjects were sampled through convenience sampling from the client companies of A Food Service Company, and 182 valid questionnaires were used in the analysis. The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, the characteristics of the relationship between the food service company and its client companies, which were reputation, communication, operation skill, and contact-point employees` service quality, had a significant effect on trust, and the effect was high in the order of contact-point employees` service quality, communication, operation skill, and reputation. Satisfaction was significantly affected by reputation, operation skill, and contact-point employee` service quality, but not by communication. The effect was high in the order of contact-point employees` service quality, reputation, and operation skill. In addition, reputation, communication, operation skill, and contact-point employees` service quality had a significant effect on long-term orientation, and the effects were high in the order of reputation, contact-point employees` service quality, communication, and operation skill. Second, with regard to the quality of relationships between a food service company and its client companies, trust had a significant effect on satisfaction. Third, among the factors related to the quality of relationships between the food service company and its client companies, trust and satisfaction had a significant effect on long-term orientation, and the effect of satisfaction was higher than that of trust. This study has scientific significance as one of only a few studies on factors affecting the long-term relationship between food service companies and their client companies, along with managerial implications that contact-point employees` capabilities are most important in service businesses, and thus efforts should be made at employing and educating them properly.

        Candidate Probiotic Bacteria의 어류병원성 Streptococcus sp. 성장에 대한 억제 효과

        세균성 어류질병의 치료 및 예방을 위하여 어류와 인체에 안전한 수산용 probiotic의 개발이 요구되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 남해안 일대에서 양식되고 있는 참굴 (Crassostrea gigas), 바지락 (Ruditapes philippinarum), 피조개 (Scapharca broughtonii), 새 조개 (Fulvia mutica)의 가식 부위로부터 17균주의 candidate probiotic bacteria (CPB)를 분리하였다. 나아가 다양한 연쇄상구균 (Lactococcus garvieae, L. piscium, Streptococcus sp., S. iniae, and S. parauberis)에 대하여 강한 생장 억제력을 보이는 균주 CPB-St)를 선별하여 어류의 연쇄구균증 관리를 위한 probiotic 균주로서의 개발 가능성을 알아보았다. CPB-St 균주를 double layer test를 통하여 다양한 연쇄상구균들에 대한 생장 억제 정도를 알아 보았으며, 혼합 배양에서의 Streptococcus sp.에 대한 생장 억제 능력을 확인하였고, CPB-St의 어류에 대한 안전성 및 장내 생존 유무를 평가하였다. CPB-St는 대부분의 연쇄상구균에 대하여 18~26 mm의 생장 억제대를 형성함으로써 높은 생장 억제 능력을 보였다. CPB-St와의 혼합 배양에서 Streptococcus sp.는 6시간째부터 생장 억제 현상이 관찰되기 시작하여 12시간 전후로 8~55배 정도의 감소를 나타내었다. CPB-St의 어류에 대한 병원성유·무를 알아본 결과, 2주일 동안 CPB-St로 인한어류 폐사는 관찰되지 않았다. CPB-St의 1회 강제경구 투여 후, 위와 장에서 CPB-St의 생존을 확인한 결과 투여 24시간 후에는 CPB-St가 모두 배출되는 것으로 나타났다. CPB-St를 probiotic bacteria로 개발하기 위해서는 어류의 장내 정착 가능성과 먹이를 통한 효과의 정확한 검증이 추후 이루어져야 할 것이다. For the treatments and protection of bacterial fish disease, many requirements are needed for aquatic probiotics so that they are effective in aquaculture animals but are also harmless to humans. In the present study, among 17 candidate probiotic bacteria (CPB) obtained from the edible part of the shellfish, Bacillus sp. CPB-St (CPB-St) were selected and in vitro evaluated for the possibility as a probiotic strain for the control of fish streptococcosis which frequently occurs in the olive flounder farms. CPB-St showed inhibitory effects on the growth of various fish pathogenic bacteria, Streptococcus sp., S. parauberis, S. iniae, Lactococcus garvieae and L. piscium by the double layer test ranging about 18~26 mm of clear zone. Inhibitory activity of CPB-St to Streptococcus sp. was observed 6 hours after and the growth of Streptococcus sp. was decreased to 8~55 folds in the co-culture of CPB-St with Streptococcus sp.. The safety of CPB-St to fish and survival of CPB-St in the intestine were assessed in the olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus. Fish mortality was not observed in artificial infection with CPB-St for 2 weeks. CPB-St was entirely excreted from the stomach and intestine 24 hours after oral injection. This results indicate that CPB-St has potential applications as a probiotic for the control of fish streptococcosis in aquaculture.

        유자 첨가 사료로 사육된 넙치의 영양성분

        This study was conducted to investigate the effect of diets supplemented with different levels (0, 2.5, 5.0, and 7.5%) of yuza (Citrus junos Sieb ex Tanaka) on nutritional composition of olive flounder. Four groups of fish (242.2±14.2g) were fed to apparent satiation twice daily for 4 months. There were no significant differences in proximate composition among the treatment groups (P<0.05). Vitamin C content in flounder muscle was higher in the yuza-added groups than in the control group, and the content among the treatment groups increased as amount of yuza added to diets increased (P<0.05). Of the eight organic acids in flounder muscle, lactic acid was predominant, followed by oxalic acid, succinic-acid, tartaric acid, and acetic acid. Flounders fed 2.5% yuza diet had the highest lactic acid content of all treatments. Four sugars were found in all groups and glucose was the major sugar. Glucose and ribose were detected as the highest sugars in the 2.5% treatment, while maltose and galactose were the dominant sugars in the 5.0% treatment. The abundant fatty acids in fed flounders were 22:6n-3 (DHA), 16:0, and 18:1n-9, which were composed of over 60% of total fatty acids. The control and the 7.5% treatment group had higher 22:6n-3 (DHA) content than the other groups. Major amino acids in samples were glutamic acid, aspartic acid, lysine, leucine, valine, arginine, and alanine. The 2.5% yuza treatment had the highest content of total amino acids and essential amino acids. There were little differences in the free amino acid compositions among the treatments. However, taurine was the predominant amino acid and made up over 47% of total free amino acids. The 2.5% added yuza group contained higher amount of sweet amino acids such as alanine, serine, proline, glycine than the other groups. The addition of yuza to diet of olive flounder had no or little effect on the nutritional components of olive flounder except for vitamin C. However, the 2.5% yuza added group had the highest nutritional values of the treatment groups.

        북방전복, Haliotis discus hannai 에 대한 Bacillus amyloliquefaciens의 probiotic 효과

        전복의 면역, 생리 및 생태에 관한 기초 연구는 매우 부족하며 전복 질병에 관한 연구 또한 어류에 비하여 극히 취약한 상태이다. 외국의 경우 전복치패에서 vibrios로 인한 피해 사례가 많이 보고되어 있으나 우리나라에서는 세균성 질병으로 인한전복 폐사에 관한 보고가 드물다. 그러나 폐사체로부터 vibrios가 높은 빈도로 분리되고 있어 이들Vibrio속 세균과 전복 폐사와의 관련성에 대한 검토가 필요하다. 현재 전복 양식 현장에서는 질병으로 인한 피해를 최소화하기 위해 항균제를 사용하고 있지만 치료 효과는 미미한 수준이다. 이에 대한 대책으로 probiotics에 대한 요구가 증가하고 있어 본 연구에서는 인체에 위해하지 않은 균을 분리하여 전복 probiotics로서의 개발 가능성을 알아보았다. 잘 숙성된 김치액에서 분리된 균들 중 다양한 vibrios에 대하여 항균력을 나타낸 KC16-2을 candidate probiotic 균으로 선발하였다. KC16-2는 생화학적 특성과 16S rRNA gene sequence에 근거하여 Bacillus amyloliquefaciens로 동정되었다 (B.amyloliquefaciens KC16-2). B. amyloliquefaciensKC16-2는 in vitro 실험에서 병원성 비브리오에 대하여 광범위한 생장 억제 효과를 보였으며, 온도15 ~ 25℃의 해수에서 4일까지 일정수를 유지하였으므로 겨울 이외의 기간에는 사용이 가능하다고 판단되었다. 또한 담즙에 의해 생장이 억제되었으나 시간 경과에 따라 처음 투여 농도보다 증가하는 양상이 관찰되어 담즙이 있는 곳에서도 생존 가능하다고 판단되었다. 시판 사료에 KC16-2를 혼합하여 12주간 전복에 투여하였을 때 대조구에 비해 다소 좋은 성장을 보였으나 통계학적으로 유의한차이는 없었다. 한편 전복에 병원성을 가진 Vibriotubiashii의 인위감염실험에서 probiotic사료를 공급한 수조에서 폐사율을 약 50% 감소시키는 결과를 나타냄으로써 기회성 vibrios로 인한 전복의 폐사를 줄이기 위하여 KC16-2의 사용이 긍정적으로 검토될 수 있음을 시사하였다. In comparison to the numbers of such studies of fish, few studies have been carried out on the immunity, physiology and ecology of abalone, while studies on abalone disease are also extremely rare. Moreover, mass mortality of cultured abalone due to pathogenic bacteria has not been reported in the southern coast of Korea. However, Vibrio-like bacteria have been isolated from dead abalone, which indicates that a review is required in order to determine the cause of abalone mortality. Use of an antimicrobial agent to minimize the damage caused by disease in abalone farms is common, but the therapeutic effects are insignificant. Demand for probiotics has increased, but research on the development of probiotics for use in abalone culture is very rare. Therefore, the present study isolated KC16-2 from fermented kimchi soup and investigated the characteristics of the isolate as a candidate probiotic bacterium in abalone. KC16-2 was identified as Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (B. amyloliquefaciens KC16-2) based on its biochemical properties and 16S rRNA gene sequence. B. amyloliquefaciens KC16-2 showed inhibitory effects against the growth of various vibrios in vitro, and kept the numbers constant until four days after inoculation in marine water at a temperature of 15~25℃, indicating the possible use of KC16-2 as a probiotic, except in the winter. The growth of KC16-2 was inhibited by bile salt, but the numbers increased over time suggesting the bacteria were still alive in the abalone``s digestive tract. Abalone fed with a diet including KC16-2 for 12 weeks showed good growth, but showed no significant differences from the control group. However, the mortality of the abalone supplied the probiotic diet was reduced to half that of the control group in a challenge test with Vibrio tubiashii. Therefore, we suggest that B. amyloliquefaciens KC16-2 could be used as a probiotic bacterium for control of the mortality of abalone caused by opportunistic pathogenic vibrios.
