21 Vol.13 No.1
Chronic Disease-Free Life Expectancy of Middle-aged and Elderly Koreans between 2005 and 2010
Vol.40 No.2
As life expectancy in South Korea has increased rapidly, scholars have investigated whether additional years of life that the elderly gained were healthy years or not by estimating healthy life expectancy. However, most health attributes used in estimating healthy life expectancy are self-reported health from survey data, which has a higher risk of response errors in reporting health. In light of this, we use more “objective” measures of health, the health examination results of 7 major chronic diseases. With the 2005-2010 health examination data, we examine whether and how many elongated life expectancy of middle-aged and elderly Koreans experienced between 2005 and 2010 are from free of chronic disease, and whether or not there are any gender differences. We found that increases in life expectancy between 2005 and 2010 are mostly due to chronic disease-free life expectancy (“healthy aging”), and these health advantages are enjoyed by both men and women. However, we still observe the male-female health survival paradox even after eliminating errors of reporting health by gender.

The current study examined the literary descriptions of Korean and Japanese writers who experienced the Great Kantō Earthquake and the Kantō Massacre through analyses of their records, exploring the narratives of exclusion and solidarity conveyed in their works. The response of the Japanese writers to the rumors about the Koreans and massacre can be categorized into three main reactions, viz. uncritical acceptance, doubt, and criticism. Through their records, one can discern the fear and exclusion of the Japanese toward others, along with the prevalent circumstances of the time concerning the rumors about the Koreans. It led to a reconsideration of the destructive power of these rumors. Additionally, the study analyzed the divergent perspectives between the Korean and Japanese writers regarding the Kantō Massacre, examining how these varying stances are portrayed in the narratives of the disaster and genocide. The analysis results showed that the literature depicting the massacre of Koreans revealed certain challenges, for example the victimized Koreans’ representations were overlooked and the issues of stringent censorship. However, traces of efforts by the Korean and Japanese writers who criticized the rumors and massacre could be identified. Within the dynamics of perpetrator-victim relationships, the Korean and Japanese writers, even while at times excluding each other, demonstrated attempts to transcend national differences and show solidarity.
