This paper discusses a method to determine the friction coefficient between molds and a sheet material during metal-forming processes. A deep-drawing process with a hemispherical punch was performed with a 99.9% pure copper ultra-thin sheet material (0.15 mm thick). Tensile tests were conducted along three specimen orientations to determine the material properties for use in finite element (FE) simulations. Different calibration methods for an anisotropic yield function (Hill48) were examined to describe the yield and r-value behaviors. FE simulations with different friction coefficients and constitutive equations were performed to confirm the variation in force vs. displacement response and major/minor strain fields. To determine the friction coefficient, an optimization process was conducted to minimize the differences between the FE and experimental results, which showed good agreement when the optimized friction coefficient was applied. The proposed method would be useful for generating precise FE models for sheet-metal-forming processes.
Synthesis of Novel Hemicyanine Dyes for Color Compensating Film in Plasma Display Panels

Five novel cyanine dyes containing julolidine and indole moieties were synthesized. Several color compensating films for plasma display panels (PDP) were prepared using these dyes. The spectroscopic and physicochemical properties of the synthesized dyes in both solution and film state were evaluated. For each color compensating film, the optimum ratio of dye to binder was determined on the basis of transmittance, half band width, and photo-stability of the color compensating film. The five synthesized dyes showed sharp absorption peaks near 590 nm (orange light) and had molar extinction coefficients above 1 × 105 M−1cm−1. The melting point of the dyes was above 200 oC and photo-stability of the color compensating films was improved by introducing substituents at the 5th position on the indole derivatives.

Background and Objectives:Deviation of the nasal septum toward one side is often asociated with an outgrowth of the inferior turbinate, which occupies the expansive space of the contralateral nasal cavity. It is assumed that this contrabalanced mechanism characterized by compensatory hypertrophy has originated to protect the more patent nasal side from excesive airflow with its drying and crusting efect. We tried to investigate histologic differences of inferior turbinate mucosa of both Materials and Method:Specimens were taken from the anterior portion of inferior turbinates of 15 patients with deviated nasal septum and compensatory hypertrophy of the inferior turbinate. After staining by hematoxylin-eosin, the histologic diferences of bilateral turbinate mucosa were examined under light microscope. Results:Epithelia of both sides showed normal or epithelial exfoliation. The number of submucosal glands was significantly higher in the opposite side than in the hypertrophied side. Inflamatory cell infiltration was more severe in the hypertrophied side than in the opposite side. Conclusion:Above results suggest that heavy infiltration of inflamatory cells and decreased number of glands in the hypertrophied side might result from aerodynamic change originated from diference of area of airway. Branchial cleft cysts are most common neck masses in adults. Most are second branchial cysts, which occur in the neck, anterior to sternocleidomastoid muscle at the mandibular angle. Rarely these cysts may be present in the parapharyngeal space. We report a case of a second branchial cleft cysts in the parapharyngeal space of 32-year-old female, which was misdiagnosed as peritonsillar abscess. It was excised via transoral and transcervical approach.

Background and Objectives : Traditionally incision and drainage is considered to be standard treatment of deep neck infection. But antibiotics and diagnostic technique are developed recently, there are reports that conservative therapy could be as successful as open surgical drainage. The purposes of this study has been to assess clinical feature between surgical therapy group and conservative therapy group through statistical analysis. Materials and Methods : A retrospective study was performed on 46 cases of deep neck space abscess, which were confirmed CT, in patients admitted from January 1999 to June 2002. Result : About 80% of all are treated with conservative therapy. Erythrocyte sediment rate, volume of abscess and duration of hospitalization of conservative therapy group are decreased than those of surgical therapy group. Conclusions : Conservative therapy is expected to be effective on treatment of early stage, small sized deep neck infection. But its complication can lead to serious condition of patient it should be done under meticulous observation.
