Using a conventional railway, a tilting train was applied as a means of improving vehicle speed during curve negotiation without any modification of infrastructure. As a study for the optimum design of the tilting mechanism of a tilting vehicle, the kinematics sensitivity of the tilting mechanism was analyzed. Using the geometric relationship of the linkage-type tilting mechanism, the relationship of the parameters and the performance index was defined using nonlinear algebraic equations. With the defined relation, the effect of change in the parameters on the performance was analyzed. The analysis result can be used in the optimum design of a tilting mechanism that considers the track environment, vehicle and operational condition in which the tilting vehicle is applied.

The bogie is the one of the most important components in a railway vehicle, as it is to support the car body and to guide the vehicle to the rails, to provide running stability, safety against derailment, better ride comfort, better curving performance. The tilting bogie is the bogie which include the tilting mechanism and tilting actuator within it and the tilting bogie should provide the better curving performance, better stability and ride comfort than conventional bogie as the tilting train run curve track almost 30% faster than conventional train. This paper described the dynamic characteristics of the tilting bogie which was developed as a part of the Korean National R&D project, 200㎞/h tilting train development for the speed-up of conventional railway lines.

Korea Railroad Research Institute(KRRI) have been developing Korean Tilting Train eXpress(TTX) with the service speed of 180㎞/h as the R&D project supporting by Korea government. The core of research is the development of the tilting bogie using the domestic tilting technologies. We developed the 3D-CAD prototype of tiling bogie model. In this paper we attempted to evaluate the structural strength of bogie frame using the Finite Element Method. Finally, we would like to propose the application of the modifying part to the detail design.

The critical speed above which the vehicle become unstable should be fundamentally verified in the development of new train. In case of high speed tilting train, which require both higher critical speed and higher curving speed, the critical speed should be more carefully treated because the both requirements are conflicting each other in the conventional train design. This research has been performed to estimate the linear and non-linear critical speed of 200㎞/h Korean Tilting Train which has been developing. The newly developed self-steering mechanism was attached to the tilting train to secure critical speed under the lower yaw stiffness which was inevitable to secure higher curving performance. The simulation to predict critical speed was done by commercial vehicle dynamic S/W. Full scale roller rig test was carried out for the validation of numerical results and effectiveness of self-steering mechanism.
