단삼과 단삼음의 역류성 식도염 억제 효과 및 암세포 이주 억제 효과

Purpose: We examined the effects of Dansam (Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge, SM) and Dansam-eum (DSE) on gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and reflux esophagitis by comparing the inhibitory effects of SM and DSE with the representative treatment of PPI Omeprazole to determine if the effects of the prescription DSE based on Korean medicine are better than those of a single-use of SM. Methods: We performed experiments using both animal models and cancer cells. Results: Comparison of SM and DSE with PPI in the animal model tests revealed that the effects were superior for SM and DSE than for PPI in all categories (8-OHdG, p-IκB, PAR2, COX-1, cathelicidin, p-JNK, Caspase 3, ATP6V1B1, GRPR, serotonin, and NPY). In three categories (COX-1, serotonin, and NPY), SM and DSE showed superior results over the Controls. In the animal model tests, DSE was superior to SM in all categories except for serotonin. The anti-cancer effects observed in cancer cell tests revealed that SM and DSE had meaningful results in terms of cytotoxicity and cell movement rate, as well as in cancer cell apoptosis. Conclusions: We confirmed that SM and DSE can have effects on reflux esophagitis through the regulation of oxidative stress, inflammation, mucosal protection, apoptosis, proton pumping, and the enteroendocrine system in the stomach and esophagus. We also confirmed that SM and DSE have superior effects to those of PPI on all aspects, especially gastric mucosa protection and enteroendocrine system control. We also confirmed that SM and DSE have anti-cancer effects. Above all, we confirmed that DSE has superior effects on almost all aspects compared to using SM alone.
Liquid crystal double-emulsion using microfluidics

The single emulsion liquid crystal (LC) droplets made by 4-cyano-4'- pentylebiphenyl (5CB, a nematic liquid crystal at room temperature) exhibit bipolar and radial orientation in aqueous solutions of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and sodiumdodecylsulfate (SDS), respectively. The bipolar droplets have two points of defect at the ends while the radial have one at the center. However the defect structures of its double emulsion LC droplets with different anchoring conditions have not been studied in detail. In this study, the defects in double-emulsion LC droplets with planar or perpendicular anchoring conditions at the inner and outer LC/aqueous interfaces were studied with the LC droplet produced by a microfluidic technique with flow-focused glass capillary. This fundamental study provides the information of the potential use of this LC droplets as biosensors.

Objective: Many types of delayed adverse reactions, such as long-term numbness, occur after injecting contrast medium, but few clinical studies have reported effective treatments for these reactions. We report that herbal medicine can have a positive clinical effect in patients who have experienced long-term numbness after contrast medium injection. Method: A patient who had felt numbness in her head and whole limbs presented at Semyung University Korean Medicine hospital. Her numbness had first started 2 days after injection of contrast medium, and she had felt it constantly for almost 2 years. After admission at the hospital, she took “modified Samul-tang” herbal medicine (120 cc three times per day) from 29 January 2019 to 2 February 2019. We measured her numbness using a numeric rating scale (NRS) on 29 January and 2 February and we compared both scores to determine the degree of favorable and clinical effects of herbal medicine. Result: The NRS score for numbness was 5 for her head and limbs on the first day (29 January), but after 4 days (2 February), the NRS score decreased to 0 for her head and both arms and hands, and it decreased from 5 to 2 for both her legs and feet. Conclusion: Korean herbal medicine can have positive clinical effects on treating adverse reactions due to injection of contrast medium.

Objective: A general prejudice exists that all herbal medicines are not good for liver. We report that herbal medicine can have positive effects on the liver, based on the improved liver function test levels observed in one patient. We also suggest the effectiveness of co-administration of herbal and western medicines. Methods: We checked the liver function test levels of one patient measured on 12 July at another hospital. We identified worse levels on 7 August, when he was first admitted to Semyung University Hospital. We measured liver function test levels of the same patient after treatment with Korean herbal medicine on 14 and 21 August during hospitalization at Semyung Hospital. We compared the figures and evaluated the effectiveness of 'Saenggangeonbi-tang' herbal medicine in the liver. Results: The patient's liver function test levels were normal on 12 July, but had become abnormal by 7 August, when he was admitted to Semyung Hospital. The cause of liver dysfunction was suggested as Atorvastatin, one of the western drugs he had started to take. Continuous treatment with Korean herbal medicine resulted in a definite improvement in liver function. Conclusion: Korean herbal medicine can provide positive improvements in liver function test levels.

The 4-cyano-4´-pentylbiphenyl (5CB) droplets were coated with surfactant sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS, 5CBSDS) and dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB, 5CBDTAB) separately, using microfluidics technique. The 5CBSDS and 5CBDTAB droplets exhibit a radial configuration under crossed polarizers observed through a polarized optical microscope. The 5CBSDS and 5CBDTAB was then exposed to the aqueous solutions of strong polyelectrolytes (PEs), a cationic quarternized poly- 4-vinylpyridine (QP4VP) and an anionic polystyrenesulfonate (PSS). The radial configuration of the 5CBSDS was changed to bipolar in QP4VP while maintained in PSS solution. A similar radial-to-bipolar (R-B) change was observed for 5CBDTAB in PSS while no change in QP4VP solution. Furthermore, the R-B change in QP4VP and PSS was found to be defendant on the concentration of PEs solutions such as, the 5CBSDS droplets exhibit radial configuration in both low (≤ 10-6 wt%) and high (≥ 0.1 wt%) concentration of QP4VP solution. This PEs charged dependent R-B change of the 5CB droplets may open a new and simple approach in the developing of liquid crystal-based biosensors.
