Advanced Patterned Vertical Aligned Nematic Mode to Elevate Transmittance
곽진석 한국광학회 2014 Current Optics and Photonics Vol.18 No.1
This paper presents an advanced patterned vertical aligned nematic liquid crystal (APVA) mode as a way of improving the transmittance of the conventional patterned, vertically-aligned nematic liquid crystal (PVA) mode. The APVA was characterized by multi-electrodes, which play an important role in generating a horizontal electric field that prevents LC disclination in the vicinity of the middle region of electrodes between top and bottom slits in PVA mode. The proposed APVA mode focused on improving dramatically the transmittance with excellent image quality. In the simulation, the APVA mode improved the transmittance by more than 22%, compared to the conventional VA modes. Therefore, it is useful to upgrade the LCD display quality.
LCD with Tunable Viewing Angle by Thermal Modulation of Optical Layer
곽진석,이유진,한인영,유창재,김재훈 한국정보디스플레이학회 2009 Journal of information display Vol.10 No.1
In this paper, we review the proposed liquid crystal display (LCD) with a tunable viewing angle consisting of a conven-tional liquid crystal display (LCD) panel and a thermally variable retardation layer (TVRL) characterized by uniformly aligned LC film with transparent indium-tin-oxide electrodes for Joule heating. In the TVRL, nematic phase is transitioned into isotropic by Joule heating. The numerical calculation showed that the intrinsic wide viewing angle was achieved at the isotropic phase of the TVRL by Joule heating, whereas the narrow viewing angle was obtained at the nematic phase of the TVRL. The simulated and experimental results of the proposed LCD show continuous and symmetrical viewing angle characteristics by tuning the retardation of TVRL using Joule heating. The structure of the viewing angle control proposed here is adoptable to all LCD modes with wide viewing angle characteristics.
흉노 제사의 신앙적 성격에 대한 연구 - 사얀-알타이 민족과의 비교를 중심으로 -

A Study on the religious nature of Xiongnu rites - Focusing on the comparison of Sayan-Altai people - Kwak, Jin-Seok ① Seon-U-Jeong meeting : Considering the cases of Sayan-Altai people as Altai and Khakas, it is presumed that in Xiongnu's case, the object which ‘Cheifs’ held rites in Seon-u-jeong for bloodgiven unite of clan was a wooden shape as ‘zzos’. This is definitely tree of clan which means ancestors of clan. As previously mentioned, even more so considering that not only ancient Turk but also every Sayan - Altai people worshipped ‘tree of clan’. ② Nong-Seong or Yong-Seong Meeting : Xiongnu might hold rites in Nong-Seong or Yong-Seong to heaven, earth and ancestors. In rites, heaven, earth and their ancestors must be configured at the tree around which long and thin cloths were hung, that is ‘tree of heaven’, ‘tree of spirit’, ‘tree of clan’. They would pray sincerely for the lushness of grasses and the prosperity of livestock by holding rite to heaven, earth and ancestors ③ Dae-Rim meeting : The purpose of having a big meeting in Dae-Rim in autumn is to count the number of people and livestock as written in <SA-GI> and <HAN-SEO>. Xiongnu's main form of production was originally a nomadic life. However they supplied with hunting or limited farming because the production of ranching was poor. Especially in its prime, the profits by depredation, tribute, tax collection and trade were even larger. The plenty of profit or lessness extremely affected on the existence of the nation. It is no wonder, then, tax and tribute was important means for existence of Xiongnu.
Ion-beam treated polyimide surface studied by second-harmonic generation
곽진석,윤태훈,G. D. Lee,J. Y. Jung,성재호,S. H. Kim,도석 김,김재창 한국물리학회 2004 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.45 No.1
Optical second-harmonic generation (SHG) was used to investigate the molecular orientation and structure of ion-beam treated polyimide surface and the adsorbed liquid crystal monolayer on this surface. The SHG signal from the polyimide surface exposed obliquely to a directional ion beam was almost isotropic azimuthally, while that from the rubbed polyimide surface showed expected anisotropy with respect to the rubbing direction. SHG from the monolayer of liquidcrystal molecules adsorbed on top of the ion-beam-treated polyimide surface became slightly more anisotropic, as compared to the polyimide surface.

Cobalt oxide nanostructure materials have been prepared by adding several concentrations of spectator Ni ions in solution, and analyzed by electron microscopy, X-day diffraction, calorimetry/thermogravimetric analysis,UV-vis absorption, Raman, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The electron microscopy results show that the morphology of the nanostructures is dramatically altered by changing the concentration of spectator ions. The bulk XRD patterns of 350 ºC-annealed samples indicate that the structure of the cobalt oxide is all of cubic Fd-3m Co3O4, and show that the major XRD peaks shift slightly with the concentration of Ni ions. In Raman spectroscopy, we can confirm the XRD data through a more obvious change in peak position, broadness, and intensity. For the un-sputtered samples in the XPS measurement process, the XPS peaks of Co 2p and O 1s for the samples prepared without Ni ions exhibit higher binding energies than those for the sample prepared with Ni ions. Upon Ar+ ion sputtering, we found Co3O4 reduces to CoO, on the basis of XPS data. Our study could be further applied to controlling morphology and surface oxidation state.
