Vol.32 No.1
Since the early 1980s, neoliberal capitalism has supported free trade, free market, tax cut, reduction of social welfare, deregulation, and finacialization, etc. in order to maximize the profits and gains for the globalized multinational corporations and huge capitals in the developed countries. In the U.S., NAFTA, a strategy of neoliberlism, became effective in 1994 although many people were concerned about losing the U.S. jobs to Mexico because of the wage gaps between the two countries. Therefore, from the beginning, NAFTA was for the manufacturers and capitalists in the U.S., not for the common workers not just in the U.S. but in Mexico. Lynn Nottage, in Sweat, dramatizes the negative effects of losing jobs on the common steel workers in Reading, Pennsylvania, because of NAFTA. Nottage shows that jobs could move one day to another country in NAFTA. Those exported jobs would not just hurt common workers financial and mental stability; they would eventually undermine the fundamental American values such as the American Dream and Melting Pot. Therefore, Nottage asks common workers to build up understanding and solidarity among themselves beyond the differences of race, gender, nationality, etc. in order to cope with and eventually get over the ordeal from this exploitative neoliberal system.
Convergence acceleration of Navier-Stokes equation using adaptive wavelet method
2010 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.24 No.2
An efficient adaptive wavelet method is proposed for the enhancement of computational efficiency of the Navier-Stokes equations. The method is based on sparse point representation (SPR), which uses the wavelet decomposition and thresholding to obtain a sparsely distributed dataset. The threshold mechanism is modified in order to maintain the spatial accuracy of a conventional Navier-Stokes solver by adapting the threshold value to the order of spatial truncation error. The computational grid can be dynamically adapted to a transient solution to reflect local changes in the solution. The flux evaluation is then carried out only at the points of the adapted dataset, which reduces the computational effort and memory requirements. A stabilization technique is also implemented to avoid the additional numerical errors introduced by the threshold procedure. The numerical results of the adaptive wavelet method are compared with a conventional solver to validate the enhancement in computational efficiency of Navier-Stokes equations without the degeneration of the numerical accuracy of a conventional solver.
Born on the Fourth of July: From Victim to Savior
Vol.33 No.1
Based upon Ron Kovic’s autobiography, Olive Stone’s Born on the Fourth of July dramatizes how the protagonist, Ron Kovic, has progressed from a victim of the nation to a savior of the nation. At first, Kovic believes in the values of American society and American Myth. More specifically, Kovic truly follows the values represented by American institutions: family, community, military and history. However, through his experiences in the Vietnam War, he has disillusioned with the existing values since he comes to believe that those values are nothing but lies. Through its three-part dramatic structure, part one of Born on the Fourth of July shows the process of how the traditional American ideology has brainwashed and sent the innocent protagonist to the Vietnam War and sacrificed him. Paralyzed from the chest down because of his wound in Vietnam, the protagonist returns home and begins to experience the home front in part two of the film. Although the protagonist has become disillusioned with the American institutions and their values on the one hand in his war on the home front, he has also come to terms with his own mistakes and damaged self on the other. Thus, in part three of the film, the protagonist emerges as the national savior equipped with his new political and moral awakening as well as his anti-war activism.
Vol.36 No.1
Following the 9/11 attacks, the United States turned to drone warfare in its fight against terrorism, as drones proved to be both cost-effective and politically safer than manned fighter jets. The Obama administration, believing in the effectiveness and morality of drones, expanded and intensified drone operations compared to its predecessor. However, Andrew Niccol’s 2014 film, Good Kill, uncovers the injustices of the CIA-led drone strikes and the growing opposition against them. The movie highlights the psychological burden on drone pilots, who face an identity crisis due to their detachment from direct combat, and struggle to balance family life with the stress of participating in unequal warfare. Their families, unable to help alleviate the pilots’ psychological anxiety, instead experience crises brought on by the pilots’ stress. Additionally, the film emphasizes the undemocratic nature of CIA-led drone warfare, characterized by a lack of transparency and limited oversight by the public, media, and Congress. The CIA’s arbitrary application of signature strikes and threats of imminent attacks has led to civilian casualties, the division of communities, and the violation of international law. Drone strikes have been conducted within the territories of non-conflicting countries such as Pakistan and Yemen, undermining their sovereignty. These actions have fueled anti-American sentiment, support for extremist militants, and violent counterattacks against U.S. drone strikes, leading to a vicious cycle of violence and global instability. In response, the film’s protagonist, Tommy, sympathizes with his co-pilot, Suarez, and decides to sabotage the CIA’s operation arbitrarily applying the principles of signature strikes and proportionality. He makes an overt protest against drone warfare by leaving the military. Ultimately, Good Kill warns of the danger posed by drone warfare and calls for a ban on armed drones to prevent further proliferation and to protect the world from uncontrollable dangers.

In this paper, we propose measurement based numerical resistivity model for low energy exploding foil initiator (LEEFI) of electronic safety and arming device(ESAD). A resistivity model describes a behavior of variable resistance in LEEFI by firing current. The previous resistivity model was based on high energy detonator applications as explosive bridge wire and exploding foil initiator. Therefore, to estimate the voltage, current, and burst time of LEEFI, a resistivity model suitable for LEEFI is needed. For the modeling of resistivity of LEEFI, we propose a specific action based equation which represents a behavior of LEEFI when firing current is applied. To verify the proposed model, we analyze a firing current transmission path to obtain parasitic impedance. We experimentally verify that the proposed resistivity model offers precise estimation for the behavior of variable resistance in LEEFI.

Ayad Akhtar, in The Invisible Hand, makes us think about the exploitative and violent attributes of neoliberal financial system. For this purpose, he contrasts the two main characters. Bashir, a former British Pakistani turned an Islam fundamentalist, opposes all the neoliberal policies imposed by the Pakistan government and foreign capitals. By contrast, Nick, a high ranking American official of the Citibank in Pakistan turned a kidnappee, represents the neoliberal financial system and practices led by the US. While working with Nick who uses highly speculative neoliberal financial products such as futures and options in investment, Bashir learns that neoliberal financial products are fundamentally exploitative and destructive since they are basically casinolike money games detached from real economy that produces services and goods. Furthermore, Bashir has come to an understanding that the US has controlled the world through the reserve currency rather than bring growth, cooperation and peace promised by the Bretton Woods System. Therefore, it is time for us to reregulate risky neoliberal financial system and move toward a common global currency in order to stabilize the world economy and to bring the world peace.
