        New record of an economic marine alga, Ahnfeltiopsis concinna, in Korea

        An economic marine alga, which is considered to be an important source of carrageenan, was collected from Jindo of the southern coast of Korea. This species shares the vegetative and female reproductive features of Ahnfeltiopsis and is characterized mostly by its small size (up to 8 cm), terete to subterete thalli at the lower portion, cartilaginous in texture, dichotomous branches, rarely produced proliferations, and an absence of hypha-like filaments in the medulla. It is distinguished from other Korean species within the genus by the thallus feature. In a phylogenetic tree based on the molecular data, this alga nests in the same clade with A. concinna from Japan but forms a sister clade to A. concinna from Mexico and Hawaii (type locality). However, the genetic distance among those sequences was calculated as 0.1–1. 3% for rbcL and 1.1% for COI sequences, considered to be intraspecific variation within the genus. Based on the morphology and molecular analysis, this alga is identified as A. concinna originally described from Hawaii. This is the first record of the species in the Korean marine algal flora.

        동해 감포 주변해역에서 저층삼중자망에 어획된 어류 군집

        Fish assemblages in the coastal waters off Gampo in the East Sea of Korea were analyzedusing the samples of fishes collected with bottom trammel gill nets June, September, andDecember 2005 and, March 2006. During the study period, a total of 32 fish species, 695 individuals,and 180,012.0 g representing 21 families were collected. The fish assemblages predominantlyconsisted of Ditrema temminckii, which accounted for 52.4% of the number of individuals and40.4% in the biomass. The next major specimens were Hexagrammos otakii, Sebastes schlegelii,Stephanolepis cirrhifer, Sebastes taczanowskii, Halichoeres poecilopterus. These six fishes accounted77.6% of total number of individuals and 77.5% of total biomass. The number of fish species,the number of individuals and biomass were fluctuated with month. The number of species washighest in June 2005 and lowest in March 2006. The number of individuals and biomass was highestin September 2005 and lowest in June 2005.

        New record of Dumontia contorta and D. alaskana (Dumontiaceae, Gigartinales) in Korea

        During a survey of marine algal flora, two gigartinalean species were collected from Pohang and Youngdeok located on the eastern coast of Korea. They share the generic morphological features of Dumontia. One is characterized by cylindrical to complanate thallus with multi- and uniaxial structure, somewhat inflated and contorted branches, and hollow medulla and cortex consisting of progressively smaller cells outwards. The other shows basically the same features as the former species but was smaller in size, as having 4–7 cm in thallus length and 1–2 mm in branch width rather than 15 and 2–5 mm. Both species are distinguished from each other only by these morphometric features. However, it is supported by molecular analysis that both species are genetically distinct. In a phylogenetic tree based on internal transcribed spacer sequence, the two species nest in the same clade as Dumontia contorta and D. alaskana, respectively. The genetic distance between both sequences within the clade was calculated as 0.0–0.2%, considered to be intra-specific for Dumontia. Based on the morphological and molecular analyses, the two Korean species are identified as D. contorta and D. alaskana described originally from Netherlands and Alaska, respectively. This is the first record of the two Dumontia species in Korea.

        New record of Chondrus retortus (Gigartinales, Rhodophyta) in Korea

        A marine red algal species was collected from Honghyeon-ri, Namhae located on the southern coast of Korea during a survey of marine algal flora. This alga shares the generic features of Chondrus, and is characterized by short and thin, canaliculated and crisped fronds as C. retortus. Tetrasporangia are developed from shallow medullary cells on both sides of branches. In a phylogenetic tree based on rbcL sequences, the Korean alga nests in the same clade as C. retortus originally described from Japan. The genetic distance between both sequences within the clade was calculated as 0.0-0.1%. Based on the morphological and molecular data, the alga is identified as Chondrus retortus. This is the first record of C. retortus in Korean marine algal flora.

        Note on a Marine Algal Species, Cryptonemia lomation (Halymeniaceae) in Korea

        During a survey of marine algal flora, a red algal species was collected from Giseong, Uljin located on the eastern coast of Korea. This species has the generic features of Cryptonemia belonging to Halymeniaceae, and is characterized by the presence of erect foliose thalli arising from a discoid holdfast, somewhat fan-shaped blade with an evanescent midrib at the base, narrow main axes with blade-like wings of slightly undulate margin, a perennial stalk, and entwined filamentous medulla with refractive stellate cells. In a phylogenetic tree based on rbcL sequence, the Korean alga nests in the same clade with C. lomation from France and C. seminervis from Spain. Genetic divergence among the sequences within the clade was not recognized thus suggesting that both the species are conspecific. The name C. lomation considered to be valid nomenclaturally is accepted for the entity. Based on the morphological and molecular analyses, the Korean alga is identified as C. lomation, originally described from Italy. This confirms the occurrence of C. lomation in Korea. The species appears to be distributed in the temperate region influenced more or less by the North Korea Cold Current.

        수온과 크기에 따른 멍게(Halocynthia roretzi )의 산소 소비

        The oxygen consumption rate (OCR) based on the water temperature and body size of the sea squirt Halocynthia roretzi was examined to provide quantitative information about the metabolic response of the species. OCRs were measured using a closed flow-through respirometer at four different water temperatures (10, 15, 20 and 25°C) and two different body sizes (21.4±1.1 g and 150.5±1.3 g, wet weight) with triplicates of each treatment. OCR increased as water temperature increased at both body sizes, but decreased as body size increased regardless of the water temperature (P<0.001). The effect of body size evaluated as a power function ranged from 0.8055 to 0.8884. The highest Q10 values in the small and large size groups ranged from 15 to 20°C and 20 to 25°C, respectively. The metabolic daily energy loss rate via respiration at all tested temperatures ranged from 56.2 to 106.1 J g-1 d-1 in the small-size group and from 44.5 to 92.0 J g-1 d-1 in the large-size group. Our results indicate that the metabolic response of H. roretzi highly depends on fluctuating water temperature at a given life stage.

        한국 일광만 저서 해조류의 해조상과 군집구조

        Marine algal flora and community structure were investigated seasonally at three sites in Ilkwang Bay on the southern east coast of Korea from May 2007 to February 2008. Total 103 species including 10 of green algae, 17 of brown algae, 76 of red algae were collected and identified. Among these species, 21 species were found throughout the year. Ulva pertusa, Enteromorpha linza, Grateloupia lanceolata, Chondracanthus intermedia and Caulacanthus ustulatus were distributed dominantly in upper intertidal zone. By contrast, crustose coralline algae, Grateloupia spp., Chondracanthus tenellus, Prionitis cornea and Sargassum spp. occurred predominantly in middle intertidal zone. Grateloupia spp., Sargassum spp., Ecklonia cava and Ulva pertusa were dominant in lower intertidal zone. Annual mean biomass in wet weight was 478.3 g m$^{-2}$. Maximum biomass was recorded in site 1 (731.8 g m$^{-2}$), and minimum was recorded in site 3 (78.5 g m$^{-2}$). The R/P, C/P and (R + C)/P value reflecting flora characteristics were 4.47, 0.59 and 5.06, respectively. Two groups produced by cluster analysis, one including sites 1, 2 and the other including site 3, showed meaningful difference in similarity, each other. Site 3 showed the limited species composition due to inflow of fresh water and absence of solid substratum. However, there was no significant difference between site 1 and site 2. In conclusion, the number of marine algae species and biomass in Ilkwang Bay were markedly reduced comparing with the previous studies. These suggest that a solution for reconstruction of the poor marine algal vegetation is considerably demanded.

        한국의 자생 해조 발굴 연구: 미기록종 끈가시우무(열매가지과, 돌가사리목)

        In the course of the survey of indigenous species, a red algal Hypnea species was collected fromeastern coast of Korea. This species is distinct from other species of Hypnea in having percurrent andcylindrical axis, linear to lanceolate branchlets in axes except their lower portion and medullary cell wallswithout lenticular thickenings. This Korean entity is identified as Hypnea chordacea Kützing (Gigartinales,Rhodophyta) based on those features. This is the first record of Hypnea chordacea in Korea.

        New Record of a Marine Algal Species, Membranoptera alata (Delesseriaceae) in Korea

        A marine algal species was collected from Sacheonjin, Gangneung located on the eastern coast of Korea during a survey of marine algal flora. This alga shares the generic features of Membranoptera belonging to the subfamily Delesserioideae and is characterized by the presence of combined features of membranous, monostromatic thalli attached by a solid discoid holdfast, blades with a conspicuous terete stipe-like midrib and microscopic lateral veins, entire margins, irregularly alternate to dichotomous branching, and obtuse apices growing apically. In a phylogenetic tree based on rbcL sequences, the Korean alga nests in the same clade with M. alata from the eastern North Atlantic. The genetic distance between both the sequences within the clade was calculated as 0.0%. Based on the morphological and molecular analyses, this Korean species is identified as the generic type, M. alata. This is the first record in the list of Korean marine algal flora.

        New Record of a Marine Algal Species, Ahnfeltiopsis linearis (Phyllophoraceae, Gigartinales), in Korea

        A marine algal species belonging to Gigartinales was collected from Geoje, Korea. This shares the generic features of Ahnfeltiopsis, such as multiaxial thalli with a compact and pseudoparenchymatous medulla, densely cytoplasmic secondary medullary cells around immersed cystocarps with a carpostome, and is distinct from similar species within the genus by a combined feature of small (up to 4 cm tall) and tuft thalli, compressed to subcompressed branches except for ultimate branchlets and base of main axes, cartilaginous in texture, dichotomous branches, rarely produced proliferations, absence of hypha-like filament in the medulla and internal cystocarps with a carpostome. In phylogenetic tree based on rbcL sequence, the Korean species nests in the same clade with Ahnfeltiopsis linearis. The genetic distance between both sequences within the clade was 1.5%, considered to be within the intra-species range for the genus. This morphological and molecular evidence confirms the Korean alga to be identified as A. linearis originally described from California. This is the first record of A. linearis in Korea.
