21 Vol.14 No.2

This study aims to demonstrate violence of hierarchy as state apparatus by examining the woman warrior’s disciplined body and mutilated body of zombie in Seth Grahame-Smith’s Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Bennett’s warriors that practiced martial arts embody the disciplined bodies by systematic norms, not challenges to gender binary while zombies slaughtered by Bennett’s warriors are the lower classes whose rights as a citizen were revoked and who could be legally killed by anybody under a state of emergency from a plague, not violent others that threaten humans. The zombies could be compared to the concept of ‘homo sacer’ or ‘bare life’ of Agamben. “A mysterious plague” that caused total chaos in England gives a cause for the emergency action that the sovereign out of control can deprive the people. Therefore, it could be interpreted as the concept of ‘state of exception’ of Agamben. Referring to the concept of zombies as ‘people’ of Deleuze and Guattari, this examines that the woman warrior’s disciplined body and mutilated body of zombie embody ‘cut’ and ‘mutilation’ of people by hierarchy as state apparatus.

21 Vol.13 No.5

Vol.22 No.3

This paper reads Angela Carter's Heroes and Villains and The Infernal Desire Machines of Doctor Hoffman as the writing of tattoo, in which Carter inscribes and criticizes the violence of patriarchal dominance over women by overtly depicting victimized women's (face) tattoos. Though Carter is well known for her sadeian discourse, the victimhood of her heroines needs to be read in terms of masochistic strategy. Since her writing of tattoo plainly reveals tattooing men's oppression of tattooed women, the ambivalent strategy of displaying women as victims is equivalent to the masochist's one. As Deleuze puts, a masochist is one who reveals the paradox of the Law/Power while performing the play of ‘beating and beaten’ relations. Likewise, Carter's writing of tattoo makes us reconsider the relationships between dominance/victim, sadism/masochism, the tattooing/the tattooed, feminine/masculine through heroines' subversion of dichotomies by emphasizing the ruler's violence along with defying being tattooed.

Vol.6 No.2

Purpose: This study explored and described the lived experiences of nurses in taking care of patients during COVID-19 pandemic in Korea. Methods: Data were collected through individual in-depth interviews with 10 nurses who involved in COVID-19 patient care. Verbatim transcripts were analyzed using Colaizzi’s phenomenological analysis. Results: Qualitative data analysis revealed three categories: ‘standing in front of the pandemic’, ‘harsh experience of caring for COVID-19 patients’, and ‘finding a way for better COVID-19 patients care’. The lived experience of nurses in caring of patients with COVID-19 infection was ‘finding the best way to provide proper care in unfamiliar and difficult pandemic situation’. Conclusion: The results illustrated the motivation, meaning, and value of pandemic care from the nurses’ perspective. Nurses felt proud of being a part of dedicated hard-working team but distressed by crumbling death without dignity and pressured by being thrown at the front-line in the COVID-19 battle. The advanced practice nurses’ hidden supports and advices were helpful for them to reinforce nursing capacity for optimal care. Nursing professionalism should be enhanced by establishing the scope of practices and providing systematic support with appropriate rewards.

Vol.- No.91

This study analyzes Jeanette Winterson’s The Stone Gods, which not only warns of the oppression of women within the tech-centered society, but also represents the possibility of woman’s resistance to it. The text depicts women seemingly liberated from reproductive duty, domestic drudgery, and gender inequalities through high-tech advancements, but with women’s fixed bodies it reveals that if the patriarchal society monopolizes the technology, women and their bodies will be oppressed, although not through the technology itself. I focus on Mrs. McMurphy’s desire for a ‘fixed’ body through the ‘genetical reversal’ to seduce her pedophile husband, and a female-formed Robo-sapiens, Spike, whose ‘exchangeable’ vagina’s purpose is to play the roles of sexual slave, as well as that of a specialized worker for male scientists. Their gendered bodies reveal how the Central Power regime uses scientific knowledge, including the media, as an ideological method to govern and exploit women’s bodies. Moreover, Spike’s dismembering of her own body for the sake of her lover, Billy, represents the possibility of woman and cyborg solidarity, resistance, and criticism on the gendered bodies constructed by the tech-centered patriarchal society.
