The frequency of reicprocal translocation damage in males of D. melanogaster irradiated with X-rays was observed in this study. The frequencies were checked at four periods with two days intervals and duration spermatogenesis after irradiation. (1) Modification in the percentage of the reciprocal translocation damage were not obtained at interval after irradiated with 500r and 1500r of X-rays respectively. (2) In two experimental groups irradiated with 50-0r and 1500r of X-rays, the frequencies showing in the spermatogenesis were 0.50%(500r), 3.85%(1500r) in mature sperm, and 1.59%, 8.10% in the spermatocyte. (3) The frequency of reciprocal translocation between the Y and 3 rd chromosomes was the highest, but in accordance with dosage increase that of 2nd and 3rd chromosomes relatively increased from 9.34 % to 30.49% while decreased from 68.75% to 46.80% in the group of the Y and 3 rd chromosomes. (4) It was supposed that these modifications of the frequency were due to heavy damage of the 2nd chromosomes than other chromosomes in accordance with dosage increase. (5) Spontaneous reciprocal translocations involving the Y, 2nd and 3rd chormosomes was 0.23%.
The Role of Visfatin in Diabetic Nephropathy

As a result of the energy overload in obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia,hypertension, and atherosclerosis develop, which together comprise the metabolic syndrome. Although the kidney becomes a victim of hyperglycemia in diabetes mellitus, recent work has shown that the abnormalities of lipid and glucose metabolism in the kidney are similarly important to those in adipose tissue. Interestingly, obesity triggers the release of adipokines such as leptin, resistin, and visfatin, and these can then be associated with the progression of diabetic nephropathy and other vascular complications. These adipokines, which are also synthesized in the kidney, appear to have an important role in renal injury associated with insulin resistance. Our studies found that visfatin is not only a surrogate marker of systemic inflammation in type 2diabetic patients but is also up-regulated in diabetic kidney through the uptake of glucose into renal cells, which leads to the activation of the intracellular insulin signaling pathway and pro-inflammatory mechanisms. However, we also observed a beneficial effect of visfatin administration to type 2 diabetic mice. Visfatin injection improved diabetic nephropathy in vivo, in contrast to our previous in vitro study of cultured renal mesangial cells. These results suggest the possibility of multiple cross-talk between adipose tissue and kidney in the metabolic syndrome, particularly in diabetic nephropathy. Further study should be undertaken to understand the role of adipose tissue and kidney as major organs in the metabolic syndrome.
한국산 무당벌레(harmonia axyridis)의 유전학적 연구 3. 남부집단의 초혈반문 및 초혈벽의 변이에 관하여

1. We have observed the frequency , geographi variation and microgeographic variation of the elytral pattern types and the elytral edge of the population of Lady-beetle, Harmonia axyridis PALLACE, collected in Jinju and other 6 localitites in South Korea. 2. the number of specimen collected were 6,625 in which Succinea was 90.32% : Axyridis ; 0.74% : Spectabilis , 3.82% ; and Conspicua 5.07%. 3. We have found that 92.26% of all specimens have elytral edge. 4. There were some differences in the compositional of the elytral pattern types and elytral edge to the population among the Western seaside , inland and southern seaside of South Korea , whereas as great difference was in the compositional proportion tot he population of Spectabilis between the western and southern seaside . There was also a gret difference of the elytral edge between the inland and southern seaside. 5. A micro-geographic variation was observed in Jinju , located on southern area of South Korea. In the samples collected from the pine trees at Jinju area the Succinea occupied 73.25%, and 69.61 % were found to be provided with elytral edge, while in the general population 92.46% of specimen were Succinea and 98.35% were found to have elytral edge.
