Vol.200 No.-

The ‘Annotations to the Four Classics(the Saseo Jibju/四書集註)’ is one of the most important Neo-Confucian texts, and it contains the basic ideas of Neo-confucianism about character-building(修己) and guiding other souls(治人). After their annexation of the Chinese territory, the Mongols established the Yuan dynasty and embraced the Confucian ways in their ruling of the Chinese peoples, and the ‘Annotations’, was selected as a key curriculum for the national examination. Under the Yuan’s influence, the Koryo government also selected this text for the national examinations and general education, and the text served as a tunnel for Confucian thoughts to be introduced to the Koryo people. One thing which should be noted is that during the latter half of the Koryo dynasty period, Meng Tzu’s theory of ‘Providing the world with Guidance’/經世論 began to be discussed singnificantly. During the middle period of the dynasty, Meng Tzu was enshrined at the National shrine, and his theories were being studied in historial textbooks such as the . Yet his criticisms against heretic idels, or his economical theories such as the Jeongjeon-jae/井田制 policy or Hangsan-ron/恒産論 theory were not that much discussed, as the dynasty’s middle period was an age in which Buddhist philosophies and Confucian ideas were co-existing peacefully. Then the Sadea-bu scholar-officials of the later periods began to learn the Confucian ideas through the ‘Annotations’, and as a result came to show a different perspective compared to the earlier generations. They supported the idea of ‘heavenly ruling’, which should be respected by the public, and required the public to keep their place and fulfill their social function. They found the Buddhist ideas quite heretic, but also considered the similarities it shared with the Confucian ideas, and deemed the basic and ultimate ideas of those two philosophies virtually identical to each other. Accounting for the human greed and desires, they also sought for the reinforcement of public authorities and fair polities. The Neo-Confucianism of this period was suggesting a much more active and reinforced moral base, which would eventually contribute to the reinforcement of the ruling authority.

This paper aims to synthesize Answer Sheets of Civil Service Examination and to examine its character during the second half of the Goryeo Dynasty. The answer sheet is one of the forms of test papers of Civil Service Examination. They ask questions about current issues at that time and ask for ways to respond. There are seven existing Answer Sheets including those of Yi Gok and Yi Saek and Jeong Mong-ju for the Ministry of Rites Examination and those of Yi Gok and An Chuk for the Yuan Dynasty’s Civil Service Examination, and those of Yi Gok and Yi Saek for the Examination of Country Magistrates of the Zhengdong Province征東行省. The Yuan Dynasty’s Answer Sheets clearly show that the circle is oriented toward the East Asian order, centered on China through the spread of Confucian culture, presuming that the content of the Six Classics六經, which contains the Confucian sense of issue, and the doctrine of the Confucian doctrine. In response to this content of the Yuan Dynasty, Answer Sheets of the Goryeo Dynasty sought Confucian Civilization by grasping the meaning of Six Classics, a Confucian scripture, presenting Confucian external defense and enlightening foreign ethnic group. Therefore, Answer Sheets of the latter half of the Goryeo Dynasty demonstrate that they recognized the original meaning of the Confucianism and they even examined its applicability to reality through questions and answers about issues of the time, and it provides the basis for opening a Confucian society in the Joseon Dynasty.

Recently, a new edition of Samguk Yusa, which is believed to have been printed and published during the early days of the Joseon dynasty period, was presented to the academic community. This article examines why a Confucian state like Joseon bothered to publish Samguk Yusa, a history book which was written from a Buddhist perspective. In the latter half of the Goryeo period, Mongol forces invaded the Korean peninsula and the following dynastic crises prompted the Goryeo people to a new interest in historical entities such as Dan`gun (perceived as the one and only founder of the people of the peninsula) which is reflected in the publication of history books like Samguk Yusa and Je`wang Wun`gi. The people`s new appreciation of certain historical figures eventually led to a formation of a national pride. Goryeo, which was being forced to establish a new kind of relationship with the Mongol Yuan Empire, a relationship which was quite different from its former relationships with the Chinese dynasties, and the Goryeo dynasty and its people were in need of a new identity, and also a new historical perspective from which to view their relationship with the Mongol Empire. Samguk Yusa and Je`wang Wun`gi describe the history of Gojoseon and establish Dan`gun as the person who literally began the history of the Korean peninsula. Samguk Yusa explains that Korean history began with Gojoseon, which was followed by "Sam Han" (``the Three Hans``), the Three Dynasties, and finally Goryeo. Previously, Dan`gun was believed in folklore to have been just a kind of regional deity from the Pyeong`yang area and the Mt. Guweon-san area of what is now Hwang`hae-do province, but he later came to be worshipped as the ``founder of the state,`` and the originator of the historical community in which the Goryeo people lived. Even in the latter half of the Goryeo period, when Dan`gun gained this new status as the founder of the Goryeo people, Confucian scholars, who believed in reasoning and did not embrace folklore-based stories with mythical properties, hesitated to accept Dan`gun as a historical figure and as a person who really existed. Based upon their understanding of Dan`gun, the people of the Confucian state of Joseon recorded the history from Dan`gun to Joseon, and in doing so tried to validate and justify the relatively young dynasty`s foundation. Using Confucian-based studies and analysis, they tried to discover the true nature of Dan`gun as a real person, and as part of this effort, Joseon writers completed Dong`gukSa`ryak and Sam`guk-sa Jeol`yo. Samguk Yusa was needed, as it was vital to secure basic primary data for historical compilation. It is presumed that Samguk Yusa was published in the Gyeongju area around 1394, in the third year of King Taejo`s reign, along with Kim Bu-shik`s Samguk Sagi. In other words, the people of Joseon imagined a Korean history that began with the time of Dan`gun and continued through to the time of Joseon, and published Samguk Yusa as part of the effort to prove this. The establishment of Dang`un as the founder of the Korean people was only possible because of the people`s already widened understanding of Dan`gun and the ancient history of the Korean peninsula.
