        Microsoft Corporation from the United States of America prevails the world's operating system market since the 1980s when personal computer systems began to be accepted as a major computing tool. However, the dominance of Microsoft on the personal operating system market has been changed since the emergence of Linux operating system in the mid 1990s. This paper is focusing on the desktop operating system with respect to the status of the Linux industry over the world, the market trends and the technological advancement concerning Linux. Also, the paper includes the analysis on the Korean market in terms of the Linux usages, the research and development trends and the governmental policies. Special findings from this paper involves the new movements in Asian countries as China and Japan, trying to change the personal computer's operating system from Windows to Linux in nationwide scale. Also, several countries are trying hard to escape from the dominance of Windows, moving towards open software environments.

      • 중대형 컴퓨터 개발을 위한 산·학·연·관 협동 연구 사례

        Host Computers Ⅰ, Ⅱ, Ⅲ and Ⅳ are midrange computer systems, which are the product of cooperative research and development by the government, a national research laboratory, private companies and the universities. The cooperative research and development is prevailing all over the world where the large scale R&D projects are implemented. It is because the large scale R&D project requires large amount of research money and manpower. This paper focuses on one of the large scale R&D project implemented in Korea during 1987 and 1998, which is called Host Computer development project. We will study on the research consortium model in terms of the life cycle of the R&D project. Also, we will study the similarity and the differences among 4 individual Host Computer development projects, searching for the better R&D consortium methodology.

      • 인터넷 서버의 용량 계획을 위한 시뮬레이션 연구

        This paper is concerned with the performance evaluation and the capacity planning for a large memory and high performance internet server, which plays the key role in the internet era. A stream server consists of a set of stream pumping nodes, a fiber channel and a set of large volume disks. The performance of the stream server largely depends on these three components. This paper models a typical stream server using AweSim simulation language, performed a series of experiments, and obtained some meaningful results. The performance bottleneck of the stream server turned out to be on the disks, whose performance enhancement resulted in the balance on the overall system performance.

        양재천의 식생현황과 하천자연도 평가

        하천 녹화공법이 적용된 서울지역의 도시 하천인 양재천을 조사지로 하여 하천의 복원 및 녹화로 인해 발생되는 자연환경상태를 파악하고, 향후 복원방향 및 녹화공법시행 수 하천관리를 위한 기초적 자료를 제공하고자 연구한 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 양재천의 식생은 강아지풀과 쑥이 우점하고 있었으며, 생태적 안정성과 깊은 관계가 있는 생활형의 비교에서 일반적으로 시공후 1-2년생의 초본류가 많은 출현 빈도를 보이지만 시간이 지나면서 그 수가 줄고 다년생의 초본류 또는 목본이 우세하게 나타났다. 하천은 녹화공법 시공 5-6년이 경과 되면서 생태적 안정을 이루기 시작하였다. 양재천의 하천자연도 등급은 Ⅱ등급이며 최하등급은 Ⅲ등급으로 나타났다. 횡단면, 종단면, 하상구조 및 저수로변 구조 항목은 Ⅱ등급, 수로의 발달, 하천구조 항목은 Ⅲ등급으로 나타났다. 항목별 평가에서 양재천은 수로의 발달, 하상구조 및 저수로변 구조 부문에서 자연도가 높이 평가 되었다. 주변 환경이 전형적은 도시 하천의 형태를 나타내고 있으나 주기적인 관리를 통해 여러 식생이 생육할 수 있는 환경을 조성하고 있었다. This study carried out to evaluate the effects of restoration through vegetation status and naturalness level in city streams of Seoul such as the Yangje Stream where landscape technology is applied. The dominant species were Setatia viridis and Artemisia princeps. Annuals, or biennials of herbaceous plants show frequent occurrence with ecological stability. However, the numbers of herbaceous plants decreased as time goes and perennial plants became dominant. The ecological stability is achieved for 5-6 years from the date of landscape construction. The evaluation for the level of naturalness in Yangje Stream is grade Ⅱ and the lowest grade that it has had was grade Ⅲ. According to the evaluation items, lateral section, longitudinal profile, bottom structure, and stream bank structure are classified as grade Ⅱ. The items related to channel development and stream structure are grade Ⅲ. It represents the properties of a typical urban stream but it has the environment where many kinds of plants can grow.

        The Smart Handheld Devices such as Personal Digital Assistance, Handheld Companions and Smart Phones will be the leading next generation information devices for the internet era. This paper introduces the concept of SHD and its usages, and shows the market and the technological trends for SHD. Based on the market research, the sales volume of SHD is expected to increase twofold in every two years. The technological issues involved in SHD are Processors, Operating Systems, Batteries, Display Panels, Microbrowsers, Instant Messaging, and Synchronization. These issues and the future of SHD will be discussed.

      • 대용량 네트워크 스토리지 시스템 분석 및 발전 전망

        This paper compared and analyzed DAS, NAS, SAN as large scale storage systems, in terms of the characteristics, price, interoperability, performance, availability, usability and economic features. Also, iSCSI was introduced as a new network storage system. DAS is considered as an old and non-promising systems as the next generation network storage system for slow data transfer speed, and the lack of interoperability. It is not easy to evaluate which is a better system between NAS and SAN for large scale network storage systems. NAS has the advantage on the interoperability and the usability, whereas SAN has the advantage on the scalability. In the future, however, iSCSI system which combines the merits of SAN and NAS, is expected to dominate the large scale network storage system market.

        상용 작업부하를 이용한 다중프로세서 컴퓨터 시스템 성능 평가

        The CC-NUMA based, distributed shared memory is an emerging architecture for multiprocessor computer systems because of its scalability and easy of programming. In this paper, we analyzed performance of a ring-based, CC-NUMA multiprocessor computer system using a commercial workload targeted for popular OLTP applications. Based on the traces collected from real machines, the characteristics of the commercial workload could be obtained. The simulation results showed that the bottleneck on the ring could be effectively removed by using a dual ring structure. We believe our simulation methodology and results will help us to design better multiprocessor computer systems for commercial application domains.
