The study aims to investigate the graduation qualification for English proficiency implemented in 37 universities in Korea. Policies and regulations of the English graduation qualifications were collected from the websites of the universities and examined in terms of the beginning school year, types of test, qualification requirements, administrative management, and alternatives for disqualified students. The findings indicated that since Sungkyunkwan University introduced the graduation qualification in 1996 for the first time, the number of universities adopting the system has been constantly on the rise. Such findings suggested that, by including English proficiency as a part of graduation requirements, the universities reinforced their efforts to fulfill the social expectations for college graduates. The findings also indicated that most universities adopted TOEIC and, TOEFL as legitimate tool for qualification tests, and that the minimum test score for qualification varied from college to college, or major to major, in a university. Finally, it was found out that the alternative qualification tools for the students, who failed to obtain the minimum test scores, varied widely among these universities. This study will be helpful to universities or educational organizations planning to implement the graduation qualification for English proficiency by enabling them to devise a more effective and advisable policy based on a closer investigation of it

방영주 현대영어교육학회 2013 현대영어교육 Vol.14 No.1
The purpose of this study is to investigate EFL college students’ perceptions of learning subject areas through English in an attempt to measure the perceptions of their experiences of CBI. The participants in this study were 130 college students who enrolled in the subject areas via English mediated instruction in a university in Korea. Data were collected through a questionnaire and a semi-structured interview. The findings showed that students felt higher interest and strong motivation for acquiring content knowledge and English in CBI and paid more attention to the lesson. Furthermore, they showed a very positive response about the necessity of CBI. With regard to the beneficial effects of CBI for students, this study showed that students highly evaluated CBI in light of the contribution to lower levels of anxiety and the enhancement of motivation of learning English, convincing the value of CBI in the content and language learning process and the desire of taking more CBI courses in the future. However, the students, especially at low-level, expressed a great deal of anxiety due to the difficulty in understanding and also due to worrying about their own proficiency levels in comparison to others having higher English proficiency. Based on the findings, the present study offers some implications for effective CBI courses and also future studies.
EFL Secondary Teachers’ Perceptions Toward Blended In-service Teacher Training
방영주 현대영어교육학회 2013 현대영어교육 Vol.14 No.3
The present study aims to offer a brief review of the characteristics of a 6-month blended in-service teacher training program (3-month non-residential training in Korea and 3-month residential training in USA) from September 2012 to February 2013. This study also explores its effects with a specific focus on teachers’ perceptions towards the training program they have experienced. Thirteen secondary English teachers were involved in this study. The main instrument employed in this study was a questionnaire asking for the participants’ perceptions about the effectiveness of teacher training program. Also, data were collected through a semi-structured interview with five out of the thirteen teachers who participated in the questionnaire. The study proves that the program has a significantly positive effect on improving participating teachers’ classroom English proficiency throughout 6-month training. While the surveyed teachers’ perceptions were found to be not overall satisfactory in the non-residential training, their overall response toward 3-month residential training was positive. The study also suggests possible ways of maximizing the effectiveness of the 6-month blended training program for future applications. This study provides a more in-depth understanding and identification of issues in teacher education research

The purpose of this study was to investigate the trends of research articles in journal of Modern English Education during the period 2000-2019 in commemoration with the 20th anniversary of the foundation. The study analyzed a total of 657 research papers written by 891 scholars. Individual articles were analyzed in the aspects of the characteristics of research (article production, language, and type of author), research topics, research subjects, and research methodologies. Based on the findings, it is recognized that studies have made remarkable progress in quantity and quality during the period. In particular, it is notable that research topics and methodology have been diversified and expanded. The findings showed that in terms of research topics, the articles on teaching/learning and acquisition were the most examined and the highest percentage of research topics involved the four language skills. As for research subjects, college students ranked first. Finally, in terms of methodology, quantitative studies were conducted more frequently than other ones. On the basis of the analysis, future directions for the journal, Modern English Education, are discussed. The study suggests that further investigation into the development and trends of studies conducted in other journals is warranted and provides useful insight for future researchers.
