The study of western history in Korea has begun with the introduction of western culture and institutions. But the regular study of it began with the liberation form the Japanese seijure, Aug, 1945. Since that time along with the liberation, the western history in Korea emerged to be picking up. There are some reasons of it, I think it came to be said like these. First we can hold independent ground. Second, we can import west western learning directly from abroad not even through japan. Third the western history is of use to the real life of Koreans such as democracy, industrialization and nation-state construction. The study of western Medieval Ages still lies as good as waste. There are two basic reasons. The Middle Ages is the gae of Christianity, so that, the abs-truse Christian thought and the difficult Latin makes students and scholars avoik it. As J.Hirschberger says in 'Geschichte der Philosophie, St.A.Augustinus is the Master of Europe. He lived in the transitional period between the end of the cla-ssical age and the beginning of the Middle Ages. He is a witness of the decline of a great civilization and the decisive directions of later ages from the Medieval A-ges to the present, and the christian orthodox beliefs such as dogma, philosophy, and ethics both to Catholic and the Protestants as well. The study of St.A.Augus-tinus has been achieved from many sides since about seventy years of age in korea. I reviewed the articles of it from journals, monographs and other booklets so as to give prospect and retropect. I hope that there will be lots of lively research activities spon this oppontun-ity.

History is of primary importance in St. Augustinus' system of thought. The characteristics of his 'Geschichtsanschauung' is the explanation of sources. His explanation of history is so religious that it is called 'Theology of History' or 'Metahistory'. People say that his view on history is 'ahistorical'. His interpretation is based upon the principles of universal determinism. He is criticised that he had treated historical evidence on 'Procratean style'. He found nothing but the achievements of universal principles of history in non-empirical and non-inductive dimension. His method is, therefore, never to be tested also. He contributed to history in some aspects. It can be summarized as follows: First, he gives the idea of universal history which had been derives from Stoicism and transformed to Christian model. The tradition is that of history in macrocosmic interpretation. Second, his concept of time is peculiar. What is time? Time is a created thing. Time has a beginning and an end. Third, he illustrates sociological simplification such as family, city and world inhabitants. The divine Providence takes, of course, the form of causality. But history is made by human race, despite the hidden interfere of God.

The 'Saemaul Movement' is the nation-wide movement to promote the well-being of Korean people, today. It starts from the-self-consciousness of our people's political, economic, social and cultural innovation for the benefits of various status of us. After the Second World War, the new-born states have to pursuit their own happiness and material wealth. The 'Movement' is just that of every states aim as is usually the case. We Korean people should have a abundant fruits for our selves and our posterity for the present and future.
