이기영은 1939년 8월에 20여 일간의 만주 답사를 진행하고 나서 장편소설 『대지의 아들』을 창작했다. 그 만주 답사는 『조선일보』의 ‘대륙문학’ 기획에 의하여 진행된 것으로 이기영은 짧은 시간 동안 만주의 한국 이주 농민들의 집거지에 대하여 밀도 높은 조사를 진행했고 그렇게 얻어진 견문들을 그대로 소설에 이용했다. 『대지의 아들』에 대한 그간의 논의를 보면 대체로 일제의 ‘국책’에 협력한 작품이라는 평가와 나름의 글쓰기 책략을 통해 완성된 비협력 내지는 항거의 작품이라는 평가로 갈리고 있다. 본고는 이러한 평가를 내리기에 앞서 이기영이 만주에서 무엇을 얻으려 했고, 무엇을 얻었고 또 그렇게 얻어진 것을 어떻게 소설화하고 있는가 하는 문제를 해명하려고 했다. 바꿔 말하면 만주가 아니면 불가능 했을 이기영의 문학적 상상력을 밝히는 것이 본고의 취지이다. 이기영의 만주 체험이 어떻게 그의 만주 상상과 만주 서사로 작동되고 있는가를 고찰하는 것은 만주(나아가 중국)이라는 탈경계 체험이 한국 근대문학에 준 영향을 분석하는 하나의 표본으로 될 수 있다. 이는 또한 기존의 연구이 전면에 내세워 깊게 다루지 않은 문제이기도 하다. 따라서 본고는 같은 경로로 창작된 이기영의 만주 기행문에 대한 해독을 곁들여 인문지리학의 시각으로 만주라는 ‘장소’가 소설에 준 상상력과 그 효과, 즉 이기영이 만주에서 무엇을 보았고 그것을 어떻게 텍스트에 담아냈느냐 하는 문제를 해명하고자 했다. 이에 본고는 이기영이 기행문에서 그려 낸 부조리한 만주의 풍경이 소설화의 과정을 거치면서 조화의 판타지로 탈바꿈하는 과정, 그리고 그 과정에서 그려진 ‘무장소’의 장소로서의 만주의 이미지를 분석하였다. Lee Ki-young conducted more than twenty-day investigation during August 1938 in Manchu, china. After that, he wrote the novel Sons of the Earth. Lee Ki-young’s travel in Manchu was supported by the plan of “Mainland Literature” of The Chosun Ilbo. During this short period of time, he did an intensive research to the South Korean immigrant villages in Manchu area, and wrote what he had seen and heard into his novel faithfully. The evaluation to Sons of the earth can be divided into two aspects. First, some thought this novel conformed to the national policy of Japanese imperialists. Second, some thought this novel fought against the national policy of Japanese imperialists by a series of writing strategies. This article aims to clarify the purpose and gains of Lee Ki-young’s travel in Manchu and find the process of the fictionalization of what Lee Ki-young had seen and heard. That is the literary imagination which can only be gained in Manchu. The transformation from Lee Ki-young’s Manchu experience to his Manchu imagination and narrative process can serve as a template, which can also be used to analyze Manchu (even China) beyond boundaries narrative’s influence on modern Korean literature. And this question isn’t discussed deeply in previous studies. By the supporting text of Lee Ki-Young’s Manchu travels and the application of the method of human geography, this paper illustrates the imagination and its artistic effects which Manchu (this place) brought to Sons of the earth. And for this it discusses the process in which unharmonious Manchu “scenery” evolved into harmonious fantasy and also the placelessness of Manchu image during this process.
