Translational Difficulties for Linguistic Features in Through the Looking-Glass

Lewis Carroll’s Alice series are filled with distinctive linguistic features such as wordplay and neologism. Two Korean translations of Looking-Glass are analyzed to compare how these devices could be translated. These translations seem to retain the content of the original, despite the difficulties. The translators applied literal translation in most cases, often with additional explanations or footnotes, regardless of the types of wordplay. Further translatability of wordplay was achieved by employing homonymy, homophony and paronymy. In conclusion, the Korean translations has shown that foreignization strategies for translating them are mainly adopted. Consequently, wordplay and neologism in these Korean Looking- Glasses can be easily identified as translations, and the translators’ visibility as well.

Spatial and Temporal Politics of Memories: Focusing on Shepard’s Fool for Love

Well-known for a prolific writer, Shepard won a variety of awards. Shepard’s theatrical techniques are particular and salient to investigate. The West is one of his recurring themes, which are focused on American identity, American-ness, American fathers’ masculinity as well. Sam Shepard as a successor to tradition of American plays embodies his peculiar realism on the stage, his theatrical techniques sums up representation of using real props, immediacy and transformation techniques. His Family Trilogy and Family Plays are representative ones to show his theatricalism. This study investigates Sam Shepard's Fool for Love, which belongs to his Family Plays. Its main focus is on spatial division and temporal reversal with a view of incestuous relationships between siblings. This stage has conscious and subconscious spaces which are revealed by dividing characters’ areas onstage. Among them, women's space seems relatively empty like the picture the Old Man pointed out. There certainly exists May, but there is no room for their mothers despite providing their father’s space. Moreover, the father figure shows authorities to cross the border between reality and fantasy. In particular, the Old Man’s utterance has control over Eddie. Memories of the characters onstage are connected to passage of time; especially to show the Old Man’s past duality. For that reason, Eddie and May are inseparably stuck in rhetorical topography of love. Therefore, their foolishness for love is about the Old Man’s dual life with his two families. Like a quote by Archbishop Anthony Bloom, “The proper response to love is to accept it. There is nothing to do.”

Redeeming the Voice of African American Women in Wilson’s Plays

August Wilson’s plays are distinguished from their respective values of his Pittburgh Cycle. Preservation of oral tradition and historical reality represented in only African Americans’ experience of slavery indicates the importance and values of the blues music in his female characters. That is, music and tradition is inseparable in discoursing African Americans’ lives. In particular, Wilson’s emphasis on female characters are not outstanding in main stream studies on him. Among them, three plays are intertwined to present the aspects of the female characters’ roles. To deal with this theme three plays are selected as follows: Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Fences and The Piano Lesson. Ma Rainey initiates African American’s intrinsic experience of conflicts and segregation from white Americans, to draw their own stories through the power of the blues. In The Piano Lesson, Wilson points out comparison between black and white through the visual image of a piano, which comprises black and white. These visual differences of color disclose literal racism and ethnocentrism at a superficial meaning. The process of acceptance that includes both black and white is seen through the piano playing. Visual effect is closely related to aesthetics of difference. Just as the colors of the piano keys do not mix and each exists respectively, their identity must also be a different color that exists in diversity. On top of that, it offers the most cogent illustrations of how music is adopted for female characterization, especially with use of the blues. In particular, female characters redeem their voices by singing their stories and playing their history through music. Therefore, redeeming their voices shows the meaning of their music and can make their history more vividly inscribed in their storytelling. In conclusion, Wilson speaks, delivers, and represents African American stories through women characters not male protagonists, especially by using their own music, the blues.

일제강점 말기 송산고등농사학원과 김두혁의 독립운동

1940년 2월부터 12월까지 일본 도쿄 경시청은 「조선의 독립을 목적으로 하는 비밀결사」를 적발했다. 이들의 공식적인 명칭이 없었기 때문에 평안도 출신자가 많다는 이유로 ‘평안그룹’이라 명명하고 주모자인 김태훈, 김운하, 김두혁 등을 검거하여 치안유지법으로 재판에 회부했다. 이 사건에 대해 그 동안 한국독립운동사학계에서는 본격적인 연구가 이루어지지지 않은 가운데 이 비밀결사의 공식명칭이 ‘평안그룹’인 것으로, 또한 이들이 유학한 일본의 대학교가 사립도쿄농업대학교인데, 일본 도쿄대학 농학부로 오인해왔다. 이 연구는 이른바 ‘평안그룹’의 독립운동이 어떠한 것이었는지를 조명함으로써 그동안 잘못 인식되어온 점을 바로잡고 그 운동의 내용과 의미를 고찰한 것이다. 이 독립운동이 시작된 공간은 평양이다. 이 운동의 중심에는 평양 장로교회인 송산교회, 이 지역의 중농 출신의 독실한 기독교 신자인 김두혁 일가, 그리고 평양지역의 조만식을 중심으로 한 기독교농촌계몽운동과 이 지역이 낳은 독립운동가 도산 안창호의 이상촌 건설 운동이 서로 연결되어 있으며 그 집합체로 설립된 송산고등농사학원이 존재했다. 김두혁은 숭실전문학교를 졸업하고 장로교계 송산교회가 설립한 신망학교의 교장을 역임한 민족주의사상이 강한 기독교도였다. 송산학원은 1935년 10월에 대동군 송산리에 설립되었는데 교장이 김두혁, 고문에 안창호, 이사에는 조만식이 선임되었다. 이 학교는 기독교를 모체로 하여 2년제로 공동생활을 하며 학습과 농업실습을 겸비한 교과를 운영했다. 덴마크국민고등학교를 모범으로 삼고 또한 이를 모델로 하여 실천하고 있는 일본의 농촌교육운동의 사례도 융합하여 운영되었다. 김두혁은 1937년 평양 지역에서 일제의 탄압이 극심해져 더 이상 민족주의적 농촌계몽운동이 불가능한 상황 속에서 이를 타개하기 위해 1년간 일본유학을 단행했다. 그는 도쿄농업대학에 유학하여 김태훈, 김운하, 공태훈 등의 동지들을 규합하여 인재를 모았다. 1938년 3월에 귀국한 김두혁은 송산고등농사학원을 거점으로 하여 도쿄농업대학 유학생과 연계하여 민족주의사상을 갖춘 농촌지도자를 양성하고 나아가 민주공화국을 지향한 독립운동을 전개했다. 일제는 1940년 2월, 송산고등농사학원의 관계자와 일본 도쿄농업대학 유학생들을 일제히 검거했으며 김두혁은 평양에서 체포되어 도쿄로 이송된 후 치안유지법 위반으로 재판을 받고 옥고를 치렀다. 이른바 ‘평안그룹’의 독립운동이란 일본 도쿄에만 국한되었던 독립운동이 아니라 평양의 송산고등농사학원에서 발원하여 도쿄농업대학과 시즈오카에 있던 흥농학원, 그리고 덴마크국민고등학교와 그룬트비의 교육정신까지 포괄하는 민족주의적 농촌계몽 비밀결사 독립운동으로 자리매김 되어야 할 것이다.

『앨리스』의 언어유희를 통한 전복의 미학과 주체화 -토끼굴로 내려가 새로운 언어의 세계에서 놀다-

??앨리스??에서 가장 특징적인 문학적, 언어적 요소는 언어유희이다. 언어유희가 발생하는 것은 소리음의 유사성으로 인해 생기는 청자의 오인이 주된 것이다. 이 현상에 착안해, 소리음(기표)의 유사성이 초래하는 새로운 기의의 대두가 색다른 기표를 발생시킨다는 것의 의미를 분석해 보고자 한다. 즉 언어유희가 발생할 때 기표가 부재하게 된다. 언어유희는 언어를 아버지와 접목시킬 때 기표의 부재가 갖는 의미를 아버지의 부재라는 주제와 결부해 살펴볼 수 있다. 언어유희를 경험하는 것은 아버지가 부재하고 있는 환상공간에서 아버지의 언어를 전복하는 놀이를 통해 새로운 언어에 대한 통제를 수행하는 것이다. 이는 주체로서 언어를 획득하는 과정이 말장난이 발생하는 상황과 관련되어 있음을 보여준다. 언어유희와 주체화의 관계를 기표의 부재라는 틀로 조망해 봄으로써 그 의미와 양상을 분석하는데 주안점을 둔다. 또한 말장난이 이루어지는 상황에서 과연 언어적 권력이 존재하고, 언어의 주도권이 이동하는지를 살펴봄과 동시에 언어적 권력의 주도권이 누구에게 있는가에 따라 어떠한 양상의 말장난이 일어날 수 있는가를 설명할 수 있다. 환상의 공간에서 만나게 되는 다양한 존재들과 소통하는 앨리스는 색다른 언어의 세계 즉 언어유희를 통해, 아버지/ 언어의 세계를 전복하는 경험을 하게 된다. 부연하면 언어를 아버지의 세계라 할 때 앨리스가 대화하고 유희하는 세계는 바로 말장난의 세상이다. 환상공간에서 펼쳐지는 언어세계는 기표의 증식과 대체 및 기의의 미끄러짐 등 언어의 놀이가 제시되고 있다. 이러한 맥락에서 본고에서는 기표의 부재와 재생산에 걸친 제반과정을 살펴봄으로써 ??앨리스??를 언어/ 아버지의 의미를 통해 분석하고자 한다. 더불어 앨리스가 경험하는 환상세계의 언어가 앨리스의 주체화에 어떠한 영향을 끼치는 가에 대해서도 살펴볼 것이다 It is well known that Alice in Wonderland(1865) by Lewis Carroll is filled with a variety of wordplay. It is a salient text to investigates the aspects and characteristics of wordplay. Among diverse functions of wordplay, this paper investigates the relationship between wordplay and subjectification. The main focus of this paper is on the meaning of absent father, the relationship between father and language, and how Alice accomplishes subjectification as a speaking subject. When wordplay occurs, speakers’ signifiers are replaced with listener’s different words with similar sound effects. In so doing, after the former signifiers became absent, the latter different signifiers are newly expressed. If wordplay includes absence of signifiers, absent signifiers can be referred to as absent father. Also, it can be seen the possibility that the spot wordplay occurs can be a place of hegemonic shift of language power between characters. In this respect, wordplay functions as a tool for subversion of language power. Diverse characters in Wonderland, such as a caterpillar, Griffon and Mad hatter, play important roles for Alice to learn new rules and order in the fantastic place through their own languages. In particular, subjectification of Alice as a speaking subject can be achieved through experiencing a variety of wordplay and managing to digest tricky phrases. In conclusion, wordplay in Wonderland is so-called play on words, thus carrying a vehicle to try to subvert father’s language in fantastic space. Like playing with words down the rabbit hole, Alice can achieve subjectification through playing with words in Wonderland.

전경대원에서 발생한 결핵의 임상 양상

Background: The purpose of this study was to document the incidence and clinical characteristics of patients with tuberculosis (TB) in combat and auxiliary police, living in a group, in Korea where the incidence rate of active TB in a general population is higher than in Western countries. Materials and Methods:We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of all tuberculosis patients diagnosed at National Police Hospital from January 2002 through December 2004. Results:In 2002-2004, a total of 156 cases of tuberculosis were identified with the mean (Standard deviation) age of 20.6 (±1.0) years. Of these, 134 (85.9%) patients were registered as new cases, 11 (7.1%) as relapse, 2 (1.3%) as failure, 5 (3.1%) as treatment-after-default cases whereas 4 (2.6 %) patients were not included in any categories. Average annual new TB rate and smear-positive TB rate were 86.5/10^(5) and 17.4/10^(5) person-years, respectively. In 12 of 31 smear-positive cases, time from onset of symptoms to diagnosis was more than 30 days. Two multidrug-resistance TB cases were identified and two suspected outbreak episodes of TB had occurred during 3 years. Conclusion:There was no statistically significant difference in the incidence rate of new cases of TB between the general population aged 20 to 29 years and combat and auxiliary police in Korea. 배경 : 국내 결핵의 발생은 감소 추세에 있으나 여전히 후진국형 발생양상을 보이고 있다. 특히 집단생활을 하는 젊은이들에서 발생하는 결핵의 유행이 간헐적으로 알려지고 있어 우려를 낳고 있다. 이에 저자들은 최근 전경대원의 결핵 발병 양상에 대해 알아보고자 본 연구를 시행하였다. 재료 및 방법 : 2002년 1월부터 2004년 12월까지 3년간 경찰병원에서 결핵 진료를 받은 전경대원의 의무기록을 후향적으로 분석하여 연도별 결핵 신환발생률, 도말양성결핵 신환율, 진단 지연, 집단발병, 다제내성결핵을 조사하였다. 결과 : 연도별 결핵 신환자 수(10만명당 발생추정치)는 2002년 50명(83.6명), 2003년 42명(83.7명), 2004년 42명(93.5명)이었고 도말양성 폐결핵 신환자 수는 2002년 10명(16.7명), 2003년 11명(21.9명), 2004년 6명(13.4명)이었다. 3년간 도말양성 폐결핵 환자는 31명이 있었고 그 중 12명은 호흡기 증상 발생 30일이 지나서 진단을 받았다. 다제내성 결핵은 2명이 있었으며 결핵의 집단발병이 의심되는 사례는 2차례 있었다. 결론 : 전경대원과 20-29세 연령군 일반인의 결핵 신환발생률, 도말양성 폐결핵 발생률의 통계적으로 유의한 차이는 없었다.

초등과정에서 디자인을 기초로 한 교육의 개선안 연구 · 초등학교 3·4학년 미술교과 중심으로

디자인은 어떠한 문제를 과학적, 합리적인 사고로 해결해나가는 실용적이며 창조적인 학문이며 예술과 함께 과학과 같은 순수학문과 문화와 같은 응용학문을 통합하는 성격을 가진 종합적인 학문이다. 따라서 디자인 교육은 잠재력과 호기심이 왕성한 초등과정에서부터 올바른 방법으로 이루어져야 하며 합리적인 디자인교육은 창의력뿐 아니라 응용력과 사고력을 활발히 하여 학생의 우수한 자질을 한층 끌어올릴 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 디자인이 학교 정규과정에서 처음으로 교육되기 시작하는 초등학교 3ㆍ4학년을 대상으로 일반교육으로서의 디자인을 살펴보기 위하여 현행되는 제7차 교육과정의 미술교과서를 교육의 '내용영역 분석’과 '행동유형 분석'으로 진행하였다. 내용영역 분석결과 초등학교 미술교과서의 내용은 미적ㆍ상징적 표현영역, 실용적ㆍ기능적 수행영역의 비중이 크고 과학적ㆍ공학적 응용영역은 상대적으로 비중이 적으며 이는 학년이 높아질수록 오히려 적어짐을 확인할 수 있었다. 과학적ㆍ공학적 응용영역이 요구로부터 발생하는 문제를 해결 하기 위한 과정이라고 생각할 때 이 영역은 교육에서 중요한 영역이라 생각된다. 디자인 관련 예시작품의 행동유형 분석에서는 다른 행동유형에 비하여 '탐구'행동 관련수와 ’협동’ 행동 관련 비율이 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 초등학교 디자인 교육의 특성이 개념적 사고와 인지 능력을 발달시키는 것이라고 볼 때, 초등학생들에게 ’탐구’와 ’협동’으로서의 인지적 행동과 사회적 책임에 대한 행동을 강조하는 것은 지나친 것이 아니다. 이러한 연구결과를 통해 통합적인 사고를 바탕으로 창의적인 문제해결을 도출하는 디자인의 특성을 고려하여, 이해하기 쉬운 주제를 통해 적극적인 참여를 유도하고 문제해결 과정중심으로 구성 원간의 상호 대화와 토론을 통해 협력적이고 합리적인 문제해결방식을 학습할 수 있는 새로운 형태의 프로그램을 제시하고자 하였다. 초등과정의 디자인교육은 미술교육의 한 부분으로서가 아니라 시대적 요구에 맞추어 다양한 영역과 내용들을 포괄하는 구체적이며 실제적인 디자인 교육으로 개발되어야 하겠다. Design is an area of study which integrates practicality of scientific, rational thoughts, creativity, authenticity of both arts and science, and applicability of cultural studies, therefore, design education should be conducted at the elementary level of students, who have infinite curiosity and potential. Arational design education not only elevates creativity, but also provokes students to think more, updating the excellent qualities that are already inherent in students. The study has conducted analyses of 'contents' and 'behavior' in the art textbook of the 7thCurricula for Grades 3 and 4 at elementary school, during which time design is first introduced in a regular school curriculum for students as a part of general education. As the results of the content analysis show, the elementary art text books focus more on aesthetic/symbolic and useful/functional aspects, and the scientific/1echnological aspects have smaller proportion in art curriculum at elementary school. The portion of scientific and technological aspects tends to reduce as the grade is higher, Considering that scientific and technological applications are necessary to solve problems derived from demands, such aspects are important in art education. The behavioral analysis results showed that the 'investigative' and 'cooperative' behavioral aspects were small in proportion to other types of behavioral aspects, Considering that the art education at elementary to develop abstract thinking and cognition, it is ndt over-reaching to emphasize the investigative and cooperative aspects of cognitive behavior and social responsibility on elementary students. Considering the characteristics of design that induces problem-solving skills based on integrative and creative thinking, this study has sought to suggest a new type of programs that attract active participation based on subjects that are comprehensible for students and teach cooperative and logical problem-solving skills through mutual communication and discussion. Design education for elementary school students should be developed into more detailed, practical education that includes diverse contents and behavior in accordance with today's demand, not just as a part of traditional art education.

상백피 추출물이 당뇨쥐의 혈당 및 효소에 미치는 영향

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the water extract of Mori Radicis Cortex(MRC) on blood glucose level and glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase(GOT), glutamic pyruvic transaminase(GPT), alkaline phosphatase(ALP) and lactate dehydrogenage(LDH) activities in streptozotocin(STZ) induced diabetic rats. Four groups of male Sprague-Dawley were a control group, STZ-diabetic group, Mori Radicis Cortex group and Mori Radicis Cortex + DTZ group. There was a significant decrease of glucose level elevated in diabetic rats treated with STZ, as compared with control group. The water extract of Mori Radicis Cortex recovered significantly above enzyme activities damaged by streptozotocin treatment. These results suggested that the water extract of Mori Radicis Cortex may be a potential antiglycemic and liver protective agents.

하천수중 용존산소의 경시적 변화에 관한 연구

In order to provide the basic information for the water quality of urban streams and the quality variation of these streams, the water pollution indicators of Sin stream and Keumho river flowing through Taegu city were measured, and the DO variations of stream waters and artifical samples were studied under the condition of stagnation. For this experiment, two sampling sites(Sungpook bridge, Mutae bridge) were selected. Sungpook bridge is located most down the Sin stream, Mutae bridge is located on the lower Keumho river. Artificial samples were prepared with mixing starch and CaCl₂, and the pHs of these samples were adjusted by adding NaOH and HCl. The results were as follows. 1. At Mutae bridge, the values of water pollution indicators measured in June and July were pH 7.5∼8.1, DO 2.7∼9.8 mg/ℓ, COD 12.7∼19.2 mg/ℓ, TS 360∼700 mg/ℓ, TSS 46∼50 mg/ℓ, TDS 314∼650 mg/ℓ, Cl- 116.4∼119.2 mg/ℓ, turbidity 17∼36 FTU, and those measured in March and April were pH 9.0∼9.2, DO 12.2∼12.9 mg/ℓ, COD 12.8∼17.2 mg/ℓ, TS 1093∼1932 mg/ℓ, TSS 36∼41 mg/ℓ, TDS 1052∼1896 mg/ℓ, Cl? 121.9∼130.5 mg/ℓ, turbidity 39∼41 FTU. 2. The values of water pollution indicators measured in June and July at Sungpook bridge were pH 6.5∼7.0, DO 6.5∼6.9 mg/ℓ, COD 16.1∼20.7 mg/ℓ, TS 231∼499 mg/ℓ, TSS 17∼25 mg/ℓ, TDS 214∼474 mg/ℓ, Cl- 54.7∼56.1 mg/ℓ, turbidity 26∼38 FTU, and those measured in March and April were pH 7.8∼8.8, DO 9.5∼12.0 mg/ℓ, COD 19.4∼23.3 mg/ℓ, TS 615∼1934 mg/ℓ, TSS 18∼20 mg/ℓ, TDS 595∼2916 mg/ℓ, Cl? 48.2∼60.9 mg/ℓ, turbidity 15∼20 FTU. 3. DOs of stream waters sampled in June and July rapidly decreased for the initial stage of stagnation, and increased from the time which dissolution of oxygen by reaeration was more than consumption of oxygen by biodegradation of organic matter. 4. DOs of stream water sampled in March and April slowly decreased from the initial stage of stagnation to the last day. 5. DO variations of stream waters stagnated in incubator(20℃) were similar to those of stream waters sampled in June and July, and stagnated under laboratory temperature.
