        Is Biblical Archaeology Still Alive?

Carlos Mora 삼육대학교 신학연구소 2019 신학과 학문 Vol.26 No.-

The idea of ‘biblical’ archaeology is sometimes rejected. The Bible is considered as only literature without any connection with history. Thus it’ s not possible to make any archaeological support to the Bible. This article evaluates this discussion from the perspective of the history of Biblical rchaeology, its goals, challenges and contributions. It presents the discussion on the relationship between Archaeology and Bible and how the presuppositions of the researcher play the main role in the way he/she will evaluate the Scriptures and its connections with the archaeological finding and the Ancient Near East texts. The study shows that Biblical Archaeology is alive and still doing contributions to the Academic world.

Abdominal ultrasonography with color Doppler analysis in the assessment of ileal Crohn’s disease: comparison with magnetic resonance enterography

( Antonio Carlos Da Silva Moraes ),( Glycia De Freitas Moraes ),( Antonio Luis Eiras De Araujo ),( Ronir Raggio Luiz ),( Celeste Elia ),( Antonio Jose Carneiro ),( Heitor Siffert Pereira De Souza ) 대한장연구학회 2019 Intestinal Research Vol.17 No.2

Background/Aims: Consistently defining disease activity remains a critical challenge in the follow-up of patients with Crohn’s disease (CD). We investigated the potential applicability of abdominal ultrasonography with color Doppler (USCD) analysis for the detection of morphological alterations and inflammatory activity in CD. Methods: Forty-three patients with CD ileitis/ileocolitis were evaluated using USCD analysis with measurements obtained on the terminal ileum and right colon. Sonographic parameters included wall thickening, stricture, hyperemia, presence of intra-abdominal mass, and fistulas. Patients were evaluated for the clinical activity (Harvey-Bradshaw Index [HBI]), fecal calprotectin (FC) and C-reactive protein (CRP). The USCD performance was assessed using magnetic resonance enterography (MRE) as a criterion standard. Results: Most measurements obtained with USCD matched the data generated with MRE; however, the agreement improved in clinically active patients where sensitivity, positive predictive value, and accuracy were >80%, considering wall thickening and hyperemia. Complications such as intestinal wall thickening, stricture formation, and hyperemia, were detected in the USCD analysis with moderate agreement with MRE. The best agreement with the USCD analysis was obtained in regard to FC, where the sensitivity, positive predictive value, and accuracy were >70%. The overall performance of USCD was superior to that of HBI, FC and CRP levels, particularly when considering thickening, stricture, and hyperemia parameters. Conclusions: USCD represents a practical noninvasive and low-cost tool for evaluating patients with ileal or ileocolonic disease, particularly in clinically active CD. Therefore, USCD might become a useful asset in the follow-up of patients with CD. (Intest Res 2019;17:227-236.)

Stability and Design Limits of Hysteretic Current-mode Switched-inductor Converters

        Carlos J. Solis,Gabriel A. Rincon-Mora 대한전자공학회 2019 Journal of semiconductor technology and science Vol.19 No.4

Emerging wireless microsystems rely on tiny batteries and intermittent energy-harvesting sources for energy and power. To sense, process, and report numerous events across extended periods, they often idle and wake to full-power conditions. Their power supplies must therefore be compact and efficient and respond quickly to sudden wide load changes. Hysteretic current-mode switched-inductor dc–dc converters are good for this application space because they are compact, efficient, and fast. Although also widely stable, they are nevertheless subject to instabilities. This paper explains how input and output voltages and load dumps limit stability, and as a result, bandwidth and response time. Measurements of a 200-mA, 1-V, 0.18-μm CMOS hysteretic current-mode buck with 95% peak powerconversion efficiency show how increasing the loaddump step by 140 mA and decreasing the input voltage by 400 mV compromise stability.

Analysis of Cyp2b1 gene expression in the rat liver and brain by multiplex PCR

        America Vanoye-Carlo,Gabriel Gutiérrez-Ospina,Jaime Marcial-Quino,Saúl Gómez-Manzo,Itzhel Garcia-Torres,Ignacio De la Mora-De la Mora,Sergio Enríquez-Flores,Sara T. Méndez,Bryan V. Phillips-Farfán,Ped 대한독성 유전단백체 학회 2015 Molecular & cellular toxicology Vol.11 No.4

The CYP2B6 enzyme is involved in the metabolism of environmental toxins and endogenous compounds. The expression and activity of the cyp2b6 gene is important for the brain’s ability to detoxify harmful compounds. In rats, the Cyp2b1 gene is homologous to the human Cyp2b6 gene and has an isoform, Cyp2b2, with nearly the same sequence. Although the distinction between them is fundamental, most studies report global changes in CYP2B enzymes due to the complexity of the techniques to detect both genes separately. We instrumented a semi-quantitative technique combining multiplex end point RT-PCR with restriction enzyme assays, allowing us to establish a relatively simple, reproducible and affordable method to distinguish Cyp2b1 gene expression from Cyp2b2. Using this technique, we showed differential Cyp2b1 expression after phenobarbital and ethanol induction in the brain and liver and detected increased Cyp2b1 expression after ethanol treatment in the brain striatum that had not been detected before.

Central Venous Reflux, a Rare Cause of Neurological Manifestations in Hemodialysis Patients: A Case Report and Literature Review

        Francisco Caiza-Zambrano,Carolina Mora Palacio,Silvia Garbugino,Fabio Maximiliano Gonzalez,Marta Bala Biolcati,Miguel Ángel Saucedo,Carlos Rugilo,Mariano Forrester,Fernando Lombi,Manuel Fernández Pard 대한신경중재치료의학회 2022 Neurointervention Vol.17 No.1

Central venous disease (CVD) is a serious complication in hemodialysis patients. Neurological manifestations are rare. We describe a female with end-stage renal disease with throbbing headache accompanied by paresthesia, weakness, and abnormal posture of her right hand during dialysis sessions. Motor symptoms completely resolved after each dialysis session, although the headaches persisted for several hours. No neurological deficit was evidenced on physical examination. Digital subtraction angiography identified an incomplete thrombosis of the left brachiocephalic vein with retrograde flow in the internal jugular vein, sigmoid sinus, and transverse sinus on the left side. This case illustrates that cerebral venous congestion due to CVD can produce neurological symptoms. Furthermore, we systematically review the literature to identify the characteristics of the cases described so far. This allows clinicians to know the entity and have a high index of suspicion in a hemodialysis patient who develops neurological symptoms.

Physicochemical characterization of two bulk fill composites at different depths

        Grazioli Guillermo,Cuevas-Suárez Carlos Enrique,Nakanishi Leina,Francia Alejandro,Moraes Rafael Ratto de 대한치과보존학회 2021 Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics Vol.46 No.3

Objectives This study analyzed the physical-chemical behavior of 2 bulk fill resin composites (BFCs; Filtek Bulk Fill [FBF], and Tetric-N-Ceram Bulk Fill [TBF]) used in 2- and 4-mm increments and compared them with a conventional resin composite (Filtek Z250). Materials and Methods Flexural strength and elastic modulus were evaluated by using a 3-point bending test. Knoop hardness was measured at depth areas 0–1, 1–2, 2–3, and 3–4 mm. The translucency parameter was measured using an optical spectrophotometer. Real-time polymerization kinetics was analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Results Flexural strength was similar among the materials, while TBF showed lower elastic modulus (Z250: 6.6 ± 1.3, FBF: 6.4 ± 0.9, TBF: 4.3 ± 1.3). The hardness of Z250 was similar only between 0–1 mm and 1–2 mm. Both BFCs had similar hardness until 2–3 mm, and showed significant decreases at 3–4 mm (FBF: 33.45 ± 1.95 at 0–1 mm to 23.19 ± 4.32 at 3–4 mm, TBF: 23.17 ± 2.51 at 0–1 mm to 15.11 ± 1.94 at 3–4 mm). The BFCs showed higher translucency than Z250. The polymerization kinetics of all the materials were similar at 2-mm increments. At 4-mm, only TBF had a similar degree of conversion compared with 2 mm. Conclusions The BFCs tested had similar performance compared to the conventional composite when used in up to 2-mm increments. When the increment was thicker, the BFCs were properly polymerized only up to 3 mm. Nutrition and yield of hydroponic arugula under inoculation of beneficial microorganisms

Gato Isabela Martins Bueno,da Silva Oliveira Carlos Eduardo,Oliveira Thaissa Julyanne Soares Sena,Jalal Arshad,de Almeida Moreira Vitória,Giolo Victoria Moraes,Vitória Letícia Schenaide,de Lima Bruno 한국원예학회 2023 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.64 No.2

The use of benefi cial fungi and bacteria can improve growth, yield and food quality of plants. The electrical conductivity (EC) of a nutrient solution is closely linked to better nutrition of arugula plants in a hydroponic system. Therefore, objectives of current study were to evaluate isolated and combined eff ect of inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense and Trichoderma hazianum under two ECs on root-shoot biomass, nutrition and yield of arugula in hydroponic cultivation system. The experi- ment was designed in a strip-plot block with fi ve replications in a 4 × 2 factorial scheme. The treatments were consisted of four microbial inoculations (without, A. brasilense, T. harzianum and co-inoculation of both) and two ECs (1.4 and 1.6 dS m −1). The higher EC with A. brasilense inoculation provided greater growth of arugula plants in a hydroponic system. Inoculation with A. brasilense has increased leaf area, shoot–root length, leaf chlorophyll index (LCI) and shoot ammonium accumulation while reduced root-shoot nitrate accumulation. The leaf nutrition or biofortifi cation of arugula plants with K, S, Ca, Mg, Zn, Fe, and Mn was improved under both isolated and combined inoculations of A. brasilense and T. harzianum .

        Reaction characteristics of Al/Fe2O3 nanocomposites

        Moon-Soo Shin,Jae-Kyeong Kim,김준우,Carlos Alberto Mendes Moraes,Hyoun-Soo Kim,구기갑 한국공업화학회 2012 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.18 No.5

Al/Fe2O3 nonacomposites have explosive and high exothermic properties by thermite reaction. In this study, Al/Fe2O3 xerogel nanocomposites were prepared by sol–gel method and thermite reaction performance was compared with those prepared by physical mixing with sonication. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of Al/Fe2O3 xerogel nanocomposites show that network structure of Fe2O3 gel covers Al nanoparticles efficiently and this indicates that improvement of thermite reaction performance due to close contact between a fuel and an oxidizer. Optimum mole ratio of Al/Fe was determined to be 2by thermite reaction performance by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis. At Al/Fe ratio of 2,thermite reaction enthalpy of the Al/Fe2O3 xerogel nancomposite was 991.4 J/g, which was higher by a factor of four than that of the nanocomposite prepared by physical mixing.

Argemone species: Potential source of biofuel and high-value biological active compounds

        Alejandra Anahi Martinez-Delga,Jose de Anda,Janet Maria Leon-Morales,Juan Carlos Mateos-Diaz,Antonia Gutierrez-Mora,Jose Juvencio Castaneda-Nava 대한환경공학회 2022 Environmental Engineering Research Vol.27 No.2

The Argemone genus includes weed species of great importance in traditional medicine due to biological activities attributed to secondary metabolites, mainly alkaloids, distributed in all tissues of this species. In addition, their seeds contain a large amount of oil (30 to 40%). For this reason, several authors have discussed the potential of this species as a non-edible source to produce multi-purpose raw materials and a low cost-crop for example in the production of biofuels such as biodiesel. Argemone species grows in poor soils with low water and nutrient requirements. This makes the Argemone species an attractive economical and environmentally friendly candidate for biofuels production. Furthermore, the Argemone species can also provide high-value by-products for the agrochemical and pharmaceutical industry. In this work, we compiled the ethnomedical information, biochemical features, and biofuel production efforts that have been published by testing different Argemone species, in order to compare the research efforts and analyze its biotechnological potential. After analyzing the literature, we conclude that the genus has great potential for high-value pharmaceutical products and energy production purposes, and also to control plant pests. We also consider that other species of the genus may have also potential applications in this field.
