Clinical and biological implications of CD133-positive and CD133-negative cells in glioblastomas.

<P>A number of recent reports have demonstrated that only CD133-positive cancer cells of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) have tumor-initiating potential. These findings raise an attractive hypothesis that GBMs can be cured by eradicating CD133-positive cancer stem cells (CSCs), which are a small portion of GBM cells. However, as GBMs are known to possess various genetic alterations, GBMs might harbor heterogeneous CSCs with different genetic alterations. Here, we compared the clinical characteristics of two GBM patient groups divided according to CD133-positive cell ratios. The CD133-low GBMs showed more invasive growth and gene expression profiles characteristic of mesenchymal or proliferative subtypes, whereas the CD133-high GBMs showed features of cortical and well-demarcated tumors and gene expressions typical of proneuronal subtype. Both CD133-positive and CD133-negative cells purified from four out of six GBM patients produced typical GBM tumor masses in NOD-SCID brains, whereas brain mass from CD133-negative cells showed more proliferative and angiogenic features compared to that from CD133-positive cells. Our results suggest, in contrast to previous reports that only CD133-positive cells of GBMs can initiate tumor formation in vivo CD133-negative cells also possess tumor-initiating potential, which is indicative of complexity in the identification of cancer cells for therapeutic targeting.</P>

Primary malignant lymphoma of the parotid gland is extremely rare entity and seldom described in the literature. Extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma of mucosa associated lymphoid tissue(MALT lymphoma) is a relatively indolent disease and tents to remain localized for prolonged period of time. MALT lymphoma can be diagnosed after immunohistopathological study. Clinically, most MALT lymphomas are localized at the time of diagnosis and may be curable with local therapy alone, either surgery or radiotherapy. We present a case of MALT lymphoma in both parotid glands of patient who detected a left infraauricular huge mass as a first symptom and underwent surgical excision and immediate reconstruction using sternocleidomastoid myocutaneous flap.

This study was to investigate the change of heart rate during giant slalom in junior alpine skiers and the correlation between competition exercise time and peak heart rate, %heart rate threshold, %heart rate threshold duration. The subjects were ten male alpine skiing racers of national junior team, 12.9±2.5 years of age. The HR was measured with polar HR tester during giant slalom performance. The results were as followings. 1. Mean V˙O_2 max was 58.6±4.9ml/kg/min, mean HRmax was 194.9±11.9beats/min in graded exercise testing. 2. Mean HRmax was 186.5±2.3beats/min in giant slalom skiing. 3. Mean competition exercise time was 83.5±1.2sec, %heart rate threshold was 90.1±1.1%, heart rate threshold was 24.5±6.2sec, %heart rate threshold was 29.3±7.2% in giant slalom skiing. 4. There was significant correlation between ginat slalom skiing time and peak HR, %heart rate threshold, respectively -0.903, 0.902. 5. There was no significant correlation between ginat slalom skiing time and heart rate threshould duration, %heart rate threshold duration, respectively 0.437, 0.398. With above result we could concluded that, anaerobic energ supply play a major role in GS skiing race. Because this study was direct field test, we regarded this test was more available to earn vivid data of result than the test in the laboratory. However, appliance of test equipment to the test was our difficulty. For the future, this kind of study would be more valuable, if it is possible to use more sophisticated method of measurement such as gas-analyzers, EMG, lactate analyzers etc.
Two New Cycloartane Saponins from the Roots of <i>Astragalus membranaceus</i>

<P>Two new cycloartane-type triterpenoid saponins were isolated from the roots of <I>Astragalus membranaceus</I> (F<SMALL>ISCH</SMALL>.) B<SMALL>GE</SMALL>. (Leguminosae) cultivated in Kangwon province, Korea. These saponins were named astramembranosides A and B and were established to be cycloastragenol 6,25-di-<I>O</I>-β-<SMALL>D</SMALL>-glucopyranoside (astramembranoside A) and cyclocanthogenin 3-<I>O</I>-β-<SMALL>D</SMALL>-glucopyranosyl(1→2)-β-<SMALL>D</SMALL>-xylopyranoside (astramembranoside B) on the basis of chemical and spectral evidence. In addition, 12 known saponins were also isolated from the same materials. Although cycloastragenol 3-<I>O</I>-xyloside and agroastragalosides I and II have already been isolated from <I>A. membranaceus</I> adventitious roots, these three saponins together with brachyoside B and azukisaponin V methyl ester were isolated for the first time from this plant.</P>
예비 중등과학 교사들의 물체의 운동 개념의 과학사적 관점 분석

이 연구에서는 물체의 운동에 대한 과학사적 변천을 아리스토텔레스 시대부터 뉴턴의 관점까지 다양하게 구분하고, 이를 토대로 설문지를 개발하였다. 설문지는 운동의 원인, 운동의 형태, 운동에서 보존되는 양의 개념을 포함하며, 이를 예비 중등 과학 교사들에게 투입하여 이들의 응답을 과학사적 관점으로 분석하였다. 연구 대상은 물리 교육을 전공하는 대학교 2학년생 20명과 다른 과학관련 교육을 전공하는 대학교 2학년생 34명이었다. 연구 결과, 물리교육을 전공하는 중등 예비교사들은 다른 과학관련 교육을 전공하는 예비교사들보다 운동의 원인이나 운동의 형태에 관련된 개념에서는 관성과 뉴턴의 힘 개념을 가지고 있는 비율이 높았다. 그러나 이들은 전공에 상관없이 운동에서 보존되는 양에 대한 개념을 알아보는 설문지에서 운동량을 속력에 비례하는 것으로 이해한 데카르트의 관점이나 운동 에너지가 보존된다는 호이겐스의 관점을 가지는 비율이 매우 높았으며, 상대적으로 운동량을 속도에 비례하는 것으로 이해하는 뉴턴의 관점을 가지고 있지 못하였다. In this study, various scientific viewpoints of 'motion of objects' were analyzed from the Aristoteles age to the Newton age. From the analysis, a questionnaire was developed which was including causes of motion, forms of motion, and preservation quantity of movement. The conceptions of pre-service science teachers were researched by the questionnaire developed in this study based on the science historical viewpoints. The subjects were twenty sophomore students of physic education major and thirty four of other science education major who majored common science education also in a college. Most of the pre-service teachers of physical education major had inertia and Newton's force conception related to the question situations of 'causes of motion' and 'forms of motion'. But a lot of the pre-service teachers of physic education major and other science education major had viewpoints of Descartes or Huygens related to the question situation of 'preservation quantity of movement'. Only few pre-service teachers regardless of major had Newton's viewpoint which represented in current Korean science curriculum for secondary school.
