Immediate Vitrectomy for Acute Endophthalmitis in Patients with a Visual Acuity of Hand Motion or Better

Purpose: To determine the efficacy of immediate pars plana vitrectomy as the primary treatment for acute endophthalmitis in patients with a visual acuity (VA) of hand motion (HM) or better. Methods: A total of 149 patients who were referred to a single center for acute endophthalmitis after cataract surgery over the 13-year study period were retrospectively analyzed. Only patients presenting with a VA of at least HM were included. Patients were initially treated with either primary vitrectomy or intravitreal antibiotic injection alone, and their visual outcomes and reintervention rates after initial treatment were compared. Results: There was no significant difference in the proportion of good (final VA ≥20 / 40) and poor (VA ≤ counting finger) visual outcomes between the groups. However, subgroup analysis of patients with a VA of HM (92 eyes) showed that the incidence of reintervention (14 of 72 eyes [19.4%] vs. 9 of 20 eyes [45.0%]) and poor visual outcomes (10 of 72 eyes [13.9%] vs. 8 of 20 eyes [40.0%]) were lower after prompt vitrectomy than after intravitreal antibiotic injection alone (p = 0.019 and p = 0.022, respectively). For those with a VA of at least counting finger, no significant difference was observed between the groups. Conclusions: For patients with endophthalmitis presenting with a VA of HM, performing a prompt vitrectomy reduced the incidence of reintervention and poor visual outcomes than the administration of intravitreal antibiotics alone. Our results suggest that primary vitrectomy for patients with endophthalmitis presenting with a VA of HM could be more beneficial than intravitreal antibiotic injection alone.

Association of Microbial Dysbiosis with Gallbladder Diseases Identified by Bile Microbiome Profiling

Background: Cholecystitis is an important risk factor for gallbladder cancer, but the bile microbiome and its association with gallbladder disease has not been investigated fully. We aimed to analyze the bile microbiome in normal conditions, chronic cholecystitis, and gallbladder cancer, and to identify candidate bacteria that play an important role in gallbladder carcinogenesis. Methods: We performed metagenome sequencing on bile samples of 10 healthy individuals, 10 patients with chronic cholecystitis, and 5 patients with gallbladder cancer, and compared the clinical, radiological, and pathological characteristics of the participants. Results: No significant bacterial signal was identified in the normal bile. The predominant dysbiotic bacteria in both chronic cholecystitis and gallbladder cancer were those belonging to the Enterobacteriaceae family. Klebsiella increased significantly in the order of normal, chronic cholecystitis, and gallbladder cancer. Patients with chronic cholecystitis and dysbiotic microbiome patterns had larger gallstones and showed marked epithelial atypia, which are considered as precancerous conditions. Conclusion: We investigated the bile microbiome in normal, chronic cholecystitis, and gallbladder cancer. We suggest possible roles of Enterobacteriaceae, including Klebsiella, in gallbladder carcinogenesis. Our findings reveal a possible link between a dysbiotic bile microbiome and the development of chronic calculous cholecystitis and gallbladder cancer.

Characterization of the Lsi1 Homologs in Cucurbita moschata and C. ficifolia for Breeding of Stock Cultivars Used for Bloomless Cucumber Production

Bloomless cucumber fruits are commercially produced by grafting onto the pumpkin stocks (Cucurbita moschata ) to restricted silicon (SiO₂) absorption. Inhibition of silicon absorption in bloomless stocks is conferred by a mutant allele of the CmLsi1 homologous to Lsi1 in rice. In this study, we characterized the Lsi1 homologs in pumpkin (C. moschata ) and its coldtolerant wild relative C. ficifolia (‘Heukjong’) in order to develop a DNA marker for selecting a bloomless trait and to establish the molecular basis for breeding bloomless stock cultivars of C. ficifolia . A Cleaved amplified polymorphic sequence (CAPS) marker (CM1-CAPS) was designed based on a non-sysnonymous single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP, C>T) of the CmLsi1 mutant-type allele, and its applicability for Marker-assisted selection (MAS) was confirmed by evaluating three bloom and five bloomless pumpkin stock cultivars. Quantitative RT-PCR of the CmLsi1 for these stock cultivers implied that expression level of the CmLsi1 gene does not appear to be associated with the bloom/bloomless trait and may differ depending on plant species and tissues. A full length cDNA of the Lsi1 homolog [named CfLsi1 (B⁺)] of ‘Heukjong’ (C. ficifolia ), was cloned and sequence comparison between CmLsi1 (B⁺) and CfLsi1 (B⁺) revealed that there exists total 24 SNPs, of which three were non-synonymous. Phylogenetic analysis of CfLsi1 (B⁺) and Lsi1 homologs further revealed that CfLsi1 (B⁺) is closesly related to Nodulin 26-like intrinsic proteins (NIPs) and most similar to CpNIP1 of C. pepo than C. moschata.

인장하중을 받는 아스팔트 도로용 고강도 앵커의 강도특성에 관한 기초 성능을 규명하기 위해 앵커 매립깊이, 포장두께, 앵커 직경, 앵커 종류, 실험 온도, 에폭시 종류, 그룹인발 수량 등을 실험변수로 하여 정적 인발실험을 실시하고, 아스팔트 앵커의 인발강도에 대하여 분석을 실시하였다. 그 결과 아스팔트 앵커의 강재강도는 기존 콘크리트 앵커의 강재강도식을 적용하면 1.08배 이상의 안전율을 확보할 수 있으므로 콘크리트 앵커 강재강도식을 사용하여도 무관한 것으로 나타났다. 아스팔트 앵커의 실험을 통해 얻은 인발하중을 제안식과 비교하면 약 ${\pm}10%$ 이내의 오차로 근사치를 나타내고 있다. 이로부터 아스팔트 앵커의 경우에도 콘크리트 앵커와 동일한 투영면적의 비가 성립될 수 있을 것으로 판단된다. In order to investigate the basic performance of the high strength anchor for asphalt road subjected to tensile load, the static pullout test was carried out and the pullout strength of the asphalt anchor was analyzed. In the pullout test, the depth of anchor, depth of pavement, diameter of anchor, type of anchor, experimental temperature, epoxy type and amount of anchor were used as test variables. As a result, the steel strength of asphalt anchor was 1.08 times higher than that of conventional concrete anchor, therefore it is considered appropriate to use the steel strength formula of concrete anchor for asphalt anchor. Compared with the proposed formula, the pullout load obtained from the test of the asphalt anchor was within ${\pm}10%$. The ratio of the projected area of the asphalt anchor is similar as that of the concrete anchor.

<P>The composite cathode of an all-solid-state battery composed of various solid-state components requires a dense microstructure and a highly percolated solid-state interface different from that of a conventional liquid-electrolyte-based Li-ion battery. Indeed, the preparation of such a system is particularly challenging. In this study, quantitative analyses of composite cathodes by three-dimensional reconstruction analysis were performed beyond the existing qualitative analysis, and their microstructures and reaction interfaces were successfully analyzed. Interestingly, various quantitative values of structure properties (such as the volume ratio, connectivity, tortuosity, and pore formation) associated with material optimization and process development were predicted, and they were found to result in limited electrochemical charge/discharge performances. We also verified that the effective two-phase boundaries were significantly suppressed to ∼23% of the total volume because of component dispersion and packing issues.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

Paper Bullets and the Crisis of the Symbolic Order : A Study of English Civil War Prose

By showcasing and analyzing three separate texts from the English Civil War (The King’s Cabinet Opened; Eikon Basilike; A Fiery Flying Roll), this paper explores how the radical shift of print culture after the collapse of state censorship reflected on and strengthened the crisis of the symbolic order in the domains of politics. The King’s Cabinet Opened exemplifies the Parliament’s new approach to the use of print. By sending King Charles’ private documents and letters to print, the Parliament attempted to turn public sentiments against King Charles, thereby finding a more effective way of undermining his authority and power. Eikon Basilike is a sort of counter attack on the part of King Charles to justify his kingship by using the same print media with a view of an emerging readership constituted of common people. King Charles used Eikon Basilike as a prop to shine his final performance at the stage of Whitehall to complete his self-fashioning as a martyr. A Fiery Flying Roll, the third piece under examination, tells us that the exploitation of print to weaken the symbolic power of established authority was not limited to disagreements between elite groups. Against Coppe’s apocalyptic vision announced clearly in the pamphlet speaks the fact that print was now embraced even among socially and politically marginalized groups to challenge the basic premises of hierarchical society that had hitherto suppressed their utopian dreams. In conclusion, these writings are the landmarks attesting to a dramatic increase in the use of print as a deconstructive force to subvert the established order and power, anticipating the arrival of post-modern cultural practices of the late 20th century.

Design of Portal System for Supercomputing Services

Supercomputing resources are used to the technology research and product development in several areas. Demand of supercomputing resources is increasing continuously. Although we build a world-class supercomputing infrastructure, researchers have difficulty in using a supercomputer. To solve these difficulties, a systematic training of supercomputers and supercomputing service environment is required. In this paper, we design an application-based portal system for supercomputing service environment. Researchers can easily and conveniently use the supercomputing resources through the portal system.

Dissenters and The Pilgrim`s Progress

John Bunyan`s Pilgrim`s Progress is well known for its unique employment of allegory. Use of this well-known feature, however, has been discussed mainly in aesthetic and formal terms without consideration of the historical and cultural contexts in which the language of allegory became the site of political struggles. To remedy the void, this paper attempts to look at the literary work from the perspective of the Restoration, a historically turbulent period in which Bunyan and the Dissenting community he belonged to collided head to head with King Charles II and his court followers over not only religious but also linguistic and literary matters. To better appreciate how a literary form was more than a mere personal choice in Bunyan`s times, relevant examples such as the popularity of heroic couplets in King Charles` courtly circles and the Puritans` ambiguous and even contradictory attitude towards allegory are provided and discussed at length. In the course of discussion, one of the most recent, well-known scholarly works on Bunyan`s allegory (i.e. Thomas Luxon`s Literal Figures) is introduced to reveal some shortcomings with his ontological interpretation and to suggest an alternative understanding of Bunyan`s allegory. What becomes clear in this discussion is that Bunyan was fully aware of possible dangers an easy rendition of Christian doctrine in the form of allegory might entail but he ventured to use the method in order to reach more broadly and teach more effectively Godly wisdom and divine knowledge to his primary target audience―the Dissenting readers.
