In this study, we investigate the effect of additive size on the densification and thermal conductivity of AlN ceramics with $MgO-CaO-Al_2O_3-SiO_2$ (MCAS) additives. Micro-sized MCAS powder prepared via melting and nano-sized MCAS powder synthesized via the polymeric complex method are used as sintering additives. We analyze the densification behavior of AlN added with 5 wt.% of MCAS by dilatometry as well as by isothermal sintering in the temperature range of $1300{\sim}1700^{\circ}C$. AlN exhibits higher sinterability with nano-MCAS than with micro-MCAS, and both specimens approach their maximum densities when sintered at $1600^{\circ}C$ for 4 h. The thermal conductivities of AlN with 5 wt% of nano- and micro-MCAS additives sintered at $1600^{\circ}C$ are 82.6 and 32.0 W/mK, respectively. We find that nano-MCAS is more effective in sintering of AlN ceramics at lower temperatures, and thus for enhancing their thermal conductivities.

Background Prediction of postoperative lung function for lung cancer is crucial to predicting perioperative risk assessment and postoperative quality of life. The objective of this study was to identify other indicators than conventional formular in predicting postoperative lung function after lung resection for lung cancer. Methods We enrolled lung cancer patients who underwent curative lobectomy and performed pulmonary function test for lung cancer at seven hospital at The Catholic University of Korea from 2017 to 2019. Postoperative (ppo) 6 and 12 months forced expiratory volume 1 (FEV1) were compared with predicted ppo FEV1 using the convention formula as follows: ppo FEV1= preoperative FEV1 x (residual segment number/total segment number). Clinical characteristics were compared between ppo FEV1 increase and decrease groups compared with predicted FEV1 values. Results A total of 263 patients were analyzed in this study. Among 214 patients performed lung function after 6 months surgery, 69 (32.2%) and 145 (67.8%) patients were classified into ppo FEV1 increase and decrease group compared with predicted FEV1 values. In ppo FEV1 increase group, median ages were younger (65 vs 69 years old, p=0.01). This group showed higher predominance of both upper lobe cancer (67.2% vs 52.8%, p< 0.05), in addition, higher proportion of preoperative residual volume(RV)/total lung capacity(TLC) ratio >40% (79.5% vs 59.3%, p=0.01), significantly. Of 153 patients performed lung function after 12 months surgery, there were no significant clinical factors between two groups. In the multivariate analysis, preoperative RV/TLC ≥40% (HR, 2.87; 95% CI, 1.10-7.43; p=0.03) was significantly associated with ppo FEV1 increase compared with predicted values. Conclusions Preoperative RV/TLC >40% was an independent predictive factor for reserved lung function in patients who underwent curative lobectomy. Moreover, upper lobectomy and young age were also associated with postoperative FEV1 increase compared with predicted values.

Paragangliomas are unusual neuroendocrine cell tumors arising from paraganglia, of which ACTH-secreting cases in the mediastinum are exremely rare. A 51-year-old woman was admitted for generalized edema and weakness which began 5 months ago. Chest X-ray an
Biological Activities of Fructus Arctii Fermented with the Basidiomycete Grifola frondosa

Fructus arctii extract containing phenolic glycosides was cultured with Grifola frondosa mycelia to produce β-glucosidase and its biological activities were studied. This β-glucosidase converted the glycosides (arctiin and caffeic acid derivatives) into aglycones (arctigenin and caffeic acid). Fermented Fructus arctii extract (G-FAE) with G. frondosa had antioxidant and 5-lipoxygenase inhibitory activities. The photoprotective potential of G-FAE was tested in human dermal fibroblasts (HDF) exposed to ultra-violet A (UVA). It was revealed that G-FAE had an inhibitory effect on human interstitial collagenase (matrix metalloproteinase, MMP-1) expression in UVA-irradiated HDF. The treatment of UVA-irradiated HDF with G-FAE resulted in a dose-dependent decrease in the expression level of MMP-1 mRNA. G-FAE also showed notable stimulation of collagen biosynthetic activity for fibroblasts. These diverse functionalities suggest that G-FAE could be a promising cosmetic ingredient.

Superoxide radical scavenging activity and DPPH radical scavenging activity were assessed in order to evaluate the antioxidant effect of the Sorbus commixta Hedl. extract (SCoE). SCoE was also treated with several carbohydrate-hydrolytic enzymes that significantly increased the total phenol and flavonoid composition of SCoE. The enzymatically treated SCoE was then assessed for antioxidative activity. The most efficient radical scavenging activity was observed when SCoE was treated with -glucanase. The radical scavenging activity of ${\beta}-glucanase-treated$ SCoE (${\beta}-GSCoE$) enhanced the viability of human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs) exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light. The intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging activity of ${\beta}-GSCoE$ was assessed using UVB (20 $mJ/cm^2$)-irradiated HDFs. UVB irradiation increased dichlorofluorescein (DCF) fluorescence, which was measured by a 5-(6-)chloromethyl-2',7'-dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate ($CM-H_2DCFDA$). DCF-fluorescence was significantly decreased in the ${\beta}-GSCoE-containing$ culture medium, suggesting that ${\beta}-GSCoE$ scavenges free radicals. The protective effect was further verified by assessing the expression of matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) in UVA-irradiated HDFs. The treatment of UVA-irradiated HDFs with ${\beta}-GSCoE$ resulted in a dose-dependent decrease in the expression level of MMP-1 protein and mRNA. These results suggest that ${\beta}-GSCoE$ may mitigate the effects of photoaging in skin by reducing UV-induced adverse skin reactions.

<P>Ephedrae Herba (EH) is obtained by drying the stems of Ephedra sinica Stapf (family Ephedraceae). EH has been used clinically to treat colds and to reduce edema in skin. The effects of EH on melanogenesis were studied in B16 murine melanocytes. The tyrosinase activity and melanin content were measured after incubation with EH. Both reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and cDNA microarray analysis were used to study the mechanism of EH action. EH decreased tyrosinase activity and melanin content in a dose-dependent manner. EH decreased microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) and tyrosinase gene expression. These effects were controlled by MITF-mediated regulation of tyrosinase gene expression. EH also altered the expression of about 100 other genes. These results suggest that EH may be used clinically to treat freckles and liver spots. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.</P>
