Protocatechuic aldehyde (PCA), a phenolic aldehyde, has therapeutic potency against atherosclerosis. Although PCA is known to inhibit the migration and proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells and intravascular thrombosis, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the protective effect of PCA on endothelial cells and injured vessels in vivo in association with G protein-coupled estrogen receptor-1 (GPER-1). With PCA treatment, cAMP production was increased in HUVECs, while GPER-1 expression was increased in both HUVECs and a rat aortic explant. PCA and G1, a GPER-1 agonist, reduced H2O2 stimulated ROS production in HUVECs, whereas, G15, a GPER-1 antagonist, increased ROS production further. These elevations were inhibited by co-treatment with PCA or G1. TNFa stimulated the expression of inflammatory markers (VCAM-1, ICAM-1 and CD40), phospho-NF-κ B, phospho-p38 and HIF-1a; however, co-treatment with PCA or G1 down-regulated this expression significantly. Likewise, increased expression of inflammatory markers by treatment with G15 was inhibited by co-treatment with PCA. In re-endothelization, aortic ring sprouting and neointima formation assay, rat aortas treated with PCA or G1 showed accelerated re-endothelization of the endothelium and reduced sprouting and neointima formation. However, aortas from G15-treated rats showed decelerated re-endothelization and increased sprouting and neointima formation. The effects of G15 were restored by co-treatment with PCA or G1. Also, in the endothelia of these aortas, PCA and G1 increased CD31 and GPER-1 and decreased VCAM-1 and CD40 expression. In contrast, the opposite effect was observed in G15-treated endothelium. These results suggest that GPER-1 might mediate the protective effect of PCA on the endothelium.

AIMS: S-1, an oral fluoropyrimidine, contains tegafur, which is converted to 5-fluorouracil mainly by CYP2A6. We evaluated the association between CYP2A6 polymorphisms and treatment outcome in metastatic gastric cancer patients treated with S-1 plus docetaxel. MATERIALS & METHODS: Chemonaive patients received S-1 40 mg/m(2) twice daily on days 1-14 and docetaxel 35 mg/m(2) on days 1 and 8 of a 3-week cycle. We analyzed the wild-type (W) allele (CYP2A6*1) and four variant (V) alleles that abolish or reduce enzyme activity (CYP2A6*4, *7, *9 and *10). A total of 50 patients were enrolled. RESULTS: The genotype frequencies were as follows: W/W (n=14, 28%), W/V (n=26, 52%) and V/V (n=0, 20%). Patients having fewer variant alleles had significantly better response rates (W/W vs W/V vs V/V=79 vs 65 vs 30%; p=0.04) and median progression-free survival (W/W vs W/V vs V/V=8.1 vs 6.9 vs 3.1 months; p=0.0009). CONCLUSION: Our findings showed that the CYP2A6 genotype correlated with the treatment efficacy of S-1-based chemotherapy in previously untreated metastatic gastric cancer patients.

Automobile-based SAR/InSAR system for ground experiments
Byung-Lae Cho,Young-Kyun Kong,Hyung-Geun Park,Young-Soo Kim IEEE 2006 IEEE geoscience and remote sensing letters Vol.3 No.3

An automobile-based synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system named AutoSAR is described. It is an experimental SAR system operating on the ground, which was developed by the Pohang University of Science and Technology, Korea. AutoSAR can also operate as an interferometric SAR (InSAR) when one additional receiving antenna is used. The swath of AutoSAR is less than 1 km, and the azimuthal coverage is limited only by the storage capacity of the system. SAR and InSAR images obtained at a test site near Pohang, Korea, are presented. Being on an automobile, this system can easily obtain SAR data of any target area with a straight road nearby

This study evaluated the usefulness of the maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) as a measure of histologic response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy in patients with extremity osteosarcoma. The correlation between [(18)?F]FDG PET SUVmax values and histologic response to preoperative chemotherapy was also assessed prospectively using PET/MRI.

Roles of RUNX1 and PU.1 in CCR3 Transcription
Kong, Su-Kang,Kim, Byung Soo,Hwang, Sae Mi,Lee, Hyune Hwan,Chung, Il Yup 한국조명·전기설비학회 2016 한국조명·전기설비학회 학술대회논문집 Vol. No.

CCR3 is a chemokine receptor that mediates the accumulation of allergic inflammatory cells, including eosinophils and Th2 cells, at inflamed sites. The regulatory sequence of the CCR3 gene, contains two Runt-related transcription factor (RUNX) 1 sites and two PU.1 sites, in addition to a functional GATA site for transactivation of the CCR3 gene. In the present study, we examined the effects of the cis-acting elements of RUNX1 and PU.1 on transcription of the gene in EoL-1 eosinophilic cells and Jurkat T cells, both of which expressed functional surface CCR3 and these two transcription factors. Introduction of RUNX1 siRNA or PU.1 siRNA resulted in a modest decrease in CCR3 reporter activity in both cell types, compared with transfection of GATA-1 siRNA. Cotransfection of the two siRNAs led to inhibition in an additive manner. EMSA analysis showed that RUNX1, in particular, bound to its binding motifs. Mutagenesis analysis revealed that all point mutants lacking RUNX1- and PU.1-binding sites exhibited reduced reporter activities. These results suggest that RUNX1 and PU.1 participate in transcriptional regulation of the CCR3 gene.

Water-dispersible ZnS:Mn nanocrystals were synthesized by capping the surface of the nanocrystal with O-(2-Aminoethyl)polyethylene glycol (PEG-$NH_2$, Mw = 10,000 g/mol) and O-(2-Carboxyethyl)polyethylene glycol (PEG-COOH, Mw = 10,000 g/mol) molecules. The modified PEG capped ZnS:Mn nanocrystal powders were thoroughly characterized by XRD, HR-TEM, EDXS, ICP-AES and FT-IR spectroscopy. The optical properties were also measured by UV/Vis and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopies. The PL spectra showed broad emission peaks at 600 nm with similar PL efficiencies of 7.68% (ZnS:Mn-PEG-NH2) and 9.18% (ZnS:Mn-PEG-COOH) respectively. The measured average particle sizes for the modified PEG capped ZnS:Mn nanocrystals by HR-TEM images were 5.6 nm (ZnS:Mn-PEG-NH2) and 6.4 nm (ZnS:Mn-PEG-COOH), which were also supported by Debye-Scherrer calculations. In addition, biological toxicity effects of the nanocrystals over the growth of wild type E. coli were investigated. They showed no biological toxicity to E. coli until very high concentration dosage of 1 mg/mL of the both nanocrystal samples.

Soo-In Sohn,Byung-Kwan Cho,Bong-Kyun Jeon,Jeung-Won Lee,Tae-Hoon Ryu,Hyun-Suk Cho,Ki-Jong Lee,Sung-Dug Oh,Hong-Il Ahn,Kong-Sik Shin 한국육종학회 2013 한국육종학회 심포지엄 Vol.2013 No.07
The cultivation of genetically modified (GM) crops has increased due to their economic and agronomic advantages. Before commercialization of GM crops, however, we must assess the potential risks of GM crops on human health and environment. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible impact of Bt rice on the soil microbial community. Microbial communities were isolated from the rhizosphere soil cultivated with Bt rice and Nakdong, parental cultivar and were subjected to be analyzed using both culture-dependent and molecular methods. The total counts of bacteria, fungi, and actinomycetes in the rhizosphere of transgenic and conventional rice were not significantly different. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) analysis of PCR-amplified 16S rRNA genes revealed that the bacterial community structures during cultural periods were very similar each other. Analysis of dominant isolates in the rhizosphere cultivated with Bt and Nakdong rice showed that the dominant isolates from the soil of Bt rice and Nakdong belonged to the Proteobacteria, Cloroflexi, Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, and Acidobacteria. These results indicate that the Bt rice has no significant impact on the soil microbial communities during cultivation period. Further study remains to be investigated whether the residue of Bt rice effect on the soil environment.
Ambiguity-free Doppler centroid estimation technique for airborne SAR using the Radon transform
Kong, Young-Kyun,Cho, Byung-Lae,Kim, Young-Soo IEEE 2005 IEEE transactions on geoscience and remote sensing Vol.43 No.4
In synthetic aperture radar (SAR) signal processing, the Doppler centroid estimation technique, called the 'clutter-lock', is important because it is related to the signal-to-noise ratio, geometric distortion, and radiometric error of the final SAR image. Conventional algorithms have either ambiguity problems or somewhat high computational load. Using the fact that the Doppler centroid and the squint angle are directly related, we propose an ambiguity-free Doppler centroid estimation technique using Radon transform, named geometry-based Doppler estimator. The proposed algorithm is computationally efficient and shows good performance of estimating the absolute Doppler centroid.
