James Joyce의 작중인물의 Baffle에 관하여

Kain은 현대사회에 대한 Joyce의 입장을 "the visitor from a foreign land examining the customs of an age"라고 했다. 여기서 the customs of an age란 곧 Stephen이 non serviam을 천명했던 대상인 three nets라 할 수 있으며, Joyce의 거의대부분의 인물들은 이 nets의 idolater가 아니면 결과적으로는 그 희생물이라 할 수 있다. 우선 정치면에서 애란민족이 역사적으로 희구해온 것은 영국으로부터의 독립이었는데도 그 결과는 1948년에 안전독립을 성취할 때까지 줄곧 failure 에 귀착되고 말았다. 특히 C.S.Parnell 사후의 정치상을 Magalaner는 'Ivy Day in the Committee Room'에서 hell symbolism을 들어서 다음과 같이 말하고 있다. "It seems inconceivable that so disciplined a writer as Joyce would mention maybe a score of times the fire, smoke, cinders, and flames on the hearth of the committee room simply to tell the reader that the room contained a fire." Stanislaus의 말을 빌리면 종교면에서 Joyce는 "the church was cruel like an old whores"라고 했다지마는, 사실인즉 그는 God의 존재에 대해 불신한 것이 아니라, 그 대상은 "malevolent reality"에 있다고 한 Kenner는 Stephen을 통해 이렇게 말하고 있다. "Stephen never expresses doubt of the existence of God nor of the essential validity of the priestly office--his non serviam is not a non credo, and he talks of a 'malevolent reality' behind these appearances." 그렇다면 Tindall의 말이 여기에 대한 결말을 지어주는 듯하다. "The trouble is that the church fails to conform to his high ideal of what a church should be. Not he but the church is insufficiently Catholic." 여기에 덧붙여 생각할 수 있는 것은 당시 식민지로서 Ireland는 Glorious Revolution 이후 영국의 자본주의 노력팽창의 희생물이 되어 빈곤에서 헤어나지 못했던 사회실정이다. Joyce의 눈에 비친 the custom of age란 바로 이러한 현실이기도 할 것이다. Paddy Dignam의 장례식에 참석한 Bloom은 묘지에서 다음과 같이 생각한다. Daren't joke about the dead for two years at least. De mortuis nil nisi prius. Go out of morning first. Head to imagine his funeral. Seems a sort of a joke. Read your own obituray notice they say you live longer. Gives you second wind. New lease of life (107) 여기서 말한 "obituary notice"란 The visitor from foreign land격인 Joyce의 작품세계 그 자체를 말한 것으로 볼 수 있으며, Joyce의 역할과 사명은 현대사회 속에 있는 Dublin이란 cemetery에 "New lease of life"를 불어넣는 것이라고도 볼 수 있다. 그러기 위해서는 nets에 대한 도전이 불가피했던 것이며, 더우기 이 nets는 서로 엉켜 있는 실정이기도 하다. "Country, church, and mission are an inextricable unity, and in rejecting the two that weem to hamper him, the reject also the one on which he has set his heart." The Portrait 5장에서 Stephen은 그의 좌절당한 Pride에 대해 "... whose name and voice and features offended his baffled pride".라고 했다. 자기실현의 꿈과 욕구를 실현하려 할 때 어떤 방해에 의해 그 목적달성이 중단, 저지 또는 봉쇄된 상태를 baffle이라 한다. 이 때 방해의 요인은 객관적 사회적 현상에서처럼 외부에서 야기될 뿐만 아니라 개인의 능력, 의지력, 욕구수준의 정도와 종류, 그리고 사치관과 도덕관에 비추어 자신의 어떤 행동을 할 수 없을 경우처럼 내부에서도 그 요인을 찾을 수 있다. 이처럼 baffle의 요인은 외적인 것과 내적인 것으로 구분된다. Dublin시민들은 이 두가지 요인에 의해 정신적 또는 심리적으로도 독립된 그리고 융통성 있는 인격성과 창의성마저도 자의 또는 타의에 의해 상실당하는 수가 허다하다. 이들의 이 같은 신정을 iconoclast로서 Joyce는 이미 널리 알려져 있는 Dubliners 집필의도에서 밝히고 있다. "My intention was to write a chapter of the moral history of my country, and I chose Dublin for the scene because that city seemed to me the center of paralysis." 그러나 이 작품에 비해 1905년 10월 15일 Grant Picahrds사에 보낸 편지에서 Joyce가 말한 "the special odour of corruption"과 scrupulous meanness의 농도가 희박한 Ulysses를 처음으로 읽은 Jung은 그 인상을 이렇게 말하고 있다. Everything is desould, every partticle of warm blood has been chilled, events unroll in icy egoism. In all the book(Ulysses) there is nothing pleasing, nothing refreshing, nothing hopeful, but only things that are grey, grisly, gruesome, or pathetic, tragic, ironic, all from the seamy side of life and so chaotic that you have to look for the thematic connections with a magnifying glass.

고혈압환자의 일회성 트레드밀 운동에 따른 혈압과 혈관탄성 반응

이종호. 고혈압환자의 일회성 트레드밀 운동에 따른 혈압과 혈관탄성 반응. 운동과학, 제12권 제2호, 267-276, 2003. 본 연구에서는 본태성 고혈압환자의 일회성 중강도 운동이 운동 후 혈압 강하와 혈관탄성에 미치는 영향을 규명하고, 혈압과 혈관탄성의 관계를 밝히고자 본태성 고혈압환자 10명과 정상인 10명을 대상으로 HRmax60%의 트레드밀 지속부하 운동을 실시하고 일회성 운동 전·후간 혈압과 혈관탄성을 관찰하였다. 트레드밀운동 실시 전·후 혈압의 차이는 고혈압 집단에서 수축기 혈압과(p<.000), 이완기 혈압(p<.002)에서 유의한 감소를 보였다. 왼발과 오른발의 혈관탄성은 두 집단 모두 유의한 증가를 보였으며, 왼발의 혈관탄성보다 많은 증가를 나타냈다. 고혈압 진단에서 수축기 혈압과 왼발의 혈관탄성(r=.-802), 오른발에서 측정한 혈관탄성(r=-.750)은 유의한 역상관을 보였고, 이완기 혈압과 왼발 혈관탄성(r=-.562), 오른발 혈관탄성(r=-.625) 역시 유의한 역상관을 나타내었다. The Propose of this study was to analyze the response of acute treadmill exercise on blood pressure and vascular compliance in essential hypertension patients. Twenty volunteers were studied : hypertension group(10), normal group(10). The experimental group was practicing on a treadmill at HRmax 60% exercise intensity for 30 minutes. We measured blood pressure and vascular compliance on 30minutes pre-exercise and post-exercise. This data were analyzed by dependent t-test and pearson correlation between blood pressure and vascular compliance. The result was as follow: The systolic blood pressure in normal group showed no significant differences between pre-exercise and post-exercise. and diastolic blood pressure in normal group showed no significant differences between pre-exercise and post-exercise. The systolic and diastolic blood pressure in hypertension group showed a significant differences. The vascular compliance measured right and left ankle in normal group and hypertension group which showed significant differences between pre-exercise and post-exercise. The systolic blood pressure in normal group was significantly related with diastolic blood pressure, vascular compliance measured left ankle. And significant relationship was found between vascular compliance measured right and left ankle. However, the diastolic blood pressure wasn't related with vascular compliance measured right and left ankle. The systolic blood pressure in hypertension group was significantly related with diastolic blood pressure, vascular compliance measured right ankle and left ankle. The diastolic blood pressure in hypertension group was significantly related with vascular compliance measured right ankle and left ankle. And significant relationship was found between vascular compliance measured right and left ankle.
