Vol.0 No.36
This paper presents a classification of the sounds corresponding to the usual Sino-Japanese characters (2010) into the five types of Go’on, Kan’on, Go’on & Kan’on, To’on, Kan’yo’on, concentrating mainly on the 172 sounds and 153 characters in the groups of Tong (通). 1) As a result of the researh this paper reports on, the 172 sounds in the groups of Tong (通) are seen to contain 64 sounds of Kan'on, 53 sounds of Go'on, 64 sounds of both Go'on and Kan'on, and 9 sounds of Kan'yo'on. The important next step is to classify all the sounds in the group of Tong (通). 2) The rhyme Dong (東) appears as the -ou/-oku type in the Sino-Japanese Kan’on. However, it appears as not only the -ou/-oku type but also the -(u)u type in the Sino-Japanese Go’on. Dou (ドウ) of Dong (同洞銅胴童瞳動) is classified as a Kan’yo’on (慣用音) in Chinese-Japanese Dictionaries because they provide only the -(u)u type as the Sino-Japanese Go’on. Nevertheless, the Dou (ドウ) of Dong (同洞銅胴童瞳動) must be classified as a Go’on-type reading. 3) Suu (崇) is classified as a Sino-Japanese Kan’on by Sasaki (2009b:207), but it is classified as a Sino-Japanese Go’on by Sato (1996). However, Suu (スウ) developed from the Sino-Japanese Kan’on Siu (シウ) because of the palatalized s(サ行) in Japanese. 4) Shu (シュ) and Shuu (シュウ) in the rhyme Dong (東) that contained [i] cannot be the standard of distinguishing the Sino-Japanese Go’on and Kan’on. Nevertheless, Shu (シュ) can be classified as a Go’on and Shuu (シュウ) can be classified as a Kan’on in the same Chinese character because Shu (シュ) occurs in old texts. 5) Roku (ロク) and Ryoku (リョク) in the rhyme Zhong(鍾) that contained [wi] cannot be the standard of distinguishing the Sino-Japanese Go’on and Kan’on. Nevertheless, Roku (ロク) can be classified as a Go’on and Ryoku (リョク) can be classified as a Kan’on in the same Chinese character because Roku (ロク) occurs in old texts.

With increasing internationalization, many loan words have come into Japan in a rapid pace recently. It is common in Japan to represent loan words in katakana now. However it is quite difficult to represent English words, which have CVC structure (closed syllable structure) basically, using Japanese words, which have CV structure (open syllable structure) basically. In addition, English language has much more consonants and vowels than Japanese language. When English words with a wide variety of phonemes come into Japan, some of those phonemes are integrated into one Japanese phoneme. There are many problems in representing loan words like that. When you look at the contents and the composition of “Cabinet Notifications and Directives: The Notation of loan word,” which is the standard in representing loan words, you can see many problems. The objective of this thesis is to present those problems in order to help revise them in the future. This thesis provides three major problems: 1) problem of composition; 2) problem of presenting original language; 3) problem of usage. Future tasks about those problems are also provided: 1) to review the need of “Chart 1 & 2”; 2) to represent foreign sound (original sound) in the body text using English notation; 3) to regularize the rejection of all usages and more than one notation. Creation of comparative table of English international phonetic symbols and katakana are also proposed.

I classified the types of multi-sound characters in old Chinese mainly focusing on Initials, and investigated the phonology system of ancient Chinese and showed how ancient Chinese changed to old Chinese. The following conclusions were drawn. (1) It seems that natural phonological changes in one language system include exchange between velars-laryngeals and dentals, exchange between linguals and affricate dentals and exchange between n and ɳ. (2) It cannot be seen as natural phonological changes in one language system that exchange between voiced sounds and voiceless sounds, exchange between aspirated sounds and unaspirated sounds, exchange between voiced sounds and aspirated sounds, exchange between velars and laryngeals, exchange between affricate dentals and fricative dentals, exchange between fricative dentals and vowels, exchange between consonants, exchange between palatal dentals and non-palatal dentals, exchange between ɳ and vowels, and exchange between l and vowel j. In my view, these phenomena occurred through contacts with various phonological systems in many different language groups. (3) It is deemed that there were two different main language groups in ancient Chinese: One group distinguished between voiced sounds and voiceless sounds and the other distinguished between aspirated sounds and unaspirated sounds. Further, I presume that voiced sounds in the language group that had the voiced-voiceless distinction changed to aspirated sounds in the language group that had the aspirated-unaspirated distinction. (4) It is thought that the changing process of linguals was linguals > affricate dentals > fricative dentals > vowel j. However, exchange between fricative dentals and vowels occurred in the language group that distinguished between voiced sounds and voiceless sounds because only voiced fricative dental sounds changed to vowel j. (5) I view that Ancient Chinese was affected by Altaic languages or Proto-Korean because there were double consonants and the consonants ɳ・l exchanged with vowels in ancient Chinese.

This paper was to research the classification of first and second rhymes on Group Xie(蟹) in six Sino-Japanese dictionaries. The following is the results. 1)The -a type of first and second rhymes on Group Xie(蟹) is classified as a Kanyo’on in Sino-Japanese dictionaries. but -a type appeared in not only Sino-Japanese Go’on and Kan’on but also Sino-Koean and Sino-Vietnamese. Because, it must be classified as a Sino-Japanese Go’on or Kan’on. 2)The type of first and second rhymes on Group Xie(蟹) in Sino-Japanese Go’on is different in each Sino-Japanese dictionaries because it appeared -ai type, -ei type, -e type. In this, the -e type must be accepted next rules. ①In case of -e type be in existence, it must be classified Sino-Japanese Go’on. ②In case of -e type is not in existence but it appeared in Kikiman’yo, it must be classified Sino-Japanese Go’on. ③In case of -e type is not in existence and it appeared -ai type or -ei type in text of Sino-Japanese Go’on, the -ai type or -ei type must be classified Sino-Japanese Go’on. 3)Sino-Japanese Go’on appeared as a two type of -ai and -ui in the closed rhyme Hui(灰) because of difficult to appear closed and main vowel. but, -ui type is be in existence only tsui(對) now, every -ai type must be classified Sino-Japanese Go’on except tsui(對). .

The purpose of this study is to find out problem on Calculating table(1996) of Go’on and Kan’on in Common use and Name use Chinese character. Conclusions are as followed. Next was classified as a Kan’yo’on but it is a Go’on. 1) Dou(洞銅胴童動) of fist grade rhyme Dong(東) 2) Nan(軟) of third grade rhyme Xian(仙) 3) Se(世) and De(弟) of third and fourth grade rhymes in group Xie(蟹) 4) Ko(己), Go(碁), Se(施) of group Zhi(止) 5) Go(後) of fist grade rhyme Hou(侯) 6) Ma(麻), Cha(茶) of second grade rhyme Ma(麻) 7) Su(手) of third grade rhyme You(尤) And, next was classified as a Kan’yo’on but it is a Kan’on. 1) To(頭) and Bo(母) of fist grade rhyme Hou(侯) 2) Seki(責), Mei・Mou(盟) of second grade rhymes in group Geng(梗) 3) Win(員・院) of rhyme Wen(文) And, another problem found out provision of To’on and Kan’yo’on. Therefore, Calculating table(1996) can’t be rule of classification on Go’on and Kan’on. This problem is find out in Sino-japanese dictionary too. Accordingly, we must make a new rule of classification on Go’on and Kan’on.
