조선 초기 여진 관계의 변화와 동북면 지역 진출 과정

        조용철(Cho, Yongcheol) 역사학회 2017 역사학보 Vol.0 No.233

Since its foundation, the Joseon Dynasty maintained friendly relations with some of Jurchen due to their support of the Joseon founder, King Taejo. For this reason, the Joseon could expand the territory in northeast area. However, when King Taejo laid down the scepter and his son King Taejong ascended the throne, some of the Jurchen became agitated and participated in Josaui’s rebellion(1402). Meanwhile, the Ming Dynasty actively promoted a policy of assimilation for the Jurchen. In response to this phenomenon, some of Jurchen intented to resist influence of the Joseon. In the 10th year of King Taejong’s reign(1410), the Udike invaded to the northeast of the Joseon territory. This meant that the influence of the founder King Taejo, who died in the 8th year of King Taejong’s reign(1408), had worn off. In response, King Taejong chose to attack the Jurchen to make new relations. But, the territory in the northeast suffered. Eventually, the Joseon had to retreat back behind the northeast border. However, by the reign of Sejong who succeeded Taejong, all negative attitudes of the incident had disappeared internally and positive aspects were emphasized. In result, the Joseon started to assert their right to northeast area again. It’s one of the Sejong’s policy to make holy their ancestors.
