<P> One new technology for fire suppressant distribution in total-flooding applications is the solid-propellant gas-generator (SPGG) technology. This article presents experimental and modeling studies of one such prototype system in order to better understand observations in the testing of this system. This particular SPGG system generates fine particles that act to suppress any fire in conjunction with inert gases also generated in the SPGG system. Initial conditions for the simulations are obtained from the available measurements of the prototype system. The modeling provides key information related to the distribution of the particles and their potential effectiveness as a fire suppressant. The primary variable in the SPGG design as identified in the initial measurements, also presented here, was the particle size, with typical particle sizes being measured at 2 and 15 µm. The key modeling result is that there is a tradeoff between the most uniform distribution of particles and the available surface-to-volume ratio for chemical suppression. Information is also provided regarding the thermal dissipation from the SPGG system.</P>

<P>Non-oxidative graphene (nOG) synthesized from natural graphite powder was modified with magnetite (Fe3O4) for removal of Cr(VI) and dyes in aqueous solution. The adsorption behavior of Cr(VI) on Fe3O4/nOG (M-nOG) was systematically investigated, and the simultaneous adsorption of Cr(VI) and dyes such as methylene blue (MB) and rhodamine B (RhB) was evaluated. Adsorption kinetic and isotherm of Cr(VI) were fitted well with pseudo-second-order model and Sips model, respectively. For the binary system, Cr(VI) removal was not affected with increasing the dye concentration, whereas the adsorption capacity of both MB and RhB was enhanced with increasing the concentrations of Cr(VI).</P>

<P>The chemical absorption rate (RA) of CO2 was measured into the aqueous nanometer sized colloidal silica solution of 0–31 wt% and diethanoleamine of 0–2 kmol/m3 in the flat‐stirred vessel with the impeller size of 0.034 m and its agitation speed of 50 rev/min at 25°C and 0.101 MPa, and compared with the values estimated from the model based on the film theory accompanied by chemical reaction. The value of the volumetric liquid‐side mass transfer coefficient (kLa) of CO2, which was used to estimate the value of RA, was obtained by the empirical correlation formula presenting the relationship between kLa and the rheological behavior of the aqueous colloidal silica solution. The value of RA in the aqueous colloidal silica solution was decreased by the reduction of kLa due to the elasticity of the solution.</P>
Total Synthesis of Neuroprotective Dictyoquinazol A, B, and C

<P> A new protective compound, dictyoquinazol A, was synthesized starting from 5-methoxy-2-nitrobenzoic acid in six-steps in 36% overall yield. Two derivatives B and C, isolated from the mushroom Dictyophora indusiata, were also synthesized from Dictyoquinazole A.</P>

<P> The first object of this study is to confirm the feasibility of sustainable flux in a dead-end mode. The second object is to identify the performance of the MF system operating under sustainable flux and simultaneously using the sustainable flux as a control parameter to evaluate the effects of pre-coagulation via comparing the different operating conditions such as various ranges of the coagulant dose, various pH of the raw water, and comparing the effects of online coagulation with conventional coagulation conditions that with sedimentation. According to the experimental results, the feasibility of sustainable flux in dead-end microfiltration (DEMF) was confirmed. In addition, it was observed that the pH control was the most effective method to improve membrane performance compared with other strategies such as pre-coagulation, and sedimentation in case the raw water with preexistent high concentration metal ions. Relative long-term experiments also confirmed the feasibility of the sustainable flux and showed the importance of backwash to improve the membrane performance.</P>

<P> In this article, we find the optimal r times degree reduction of Bézier curves with respect to the Jacobi-weighted L2-norm on the interval [0, 1]. This method describes a simple and efficient algorithm based on matrix computations. Also, our method includes many previous results for the best approximation with L1, L2, and L∞-norms. We give some examples and figures to demonstrate these methods.</P>
Absorption of Carbon Dioxide into Aqueous Colloidal Silica Solution
Park, Sang‐,Wook,Lee, Joon‐,Wook,Choi, Byoung‐,Sik,Lee, Jae‐,Wook M. Dekker 2006 Separation science and technology Vol.41 No.8
<P>On the basis of experimental data for carbon dioxide absorption into aqueous nanometer sized colloidal silica solution as a non‐Newtonian fluid, a dimensionless correlation for volumetric liquid‐side mass transfer coefficient (k L a) of CO 2 in the flat‐stirred vessel was proposed. In addition to ordinary liquid properties and operating parameters such as impeller size and speed in the vessel, Deborah number, which is defined as the product of the characteristic material times of the liquid and agitation speed in the flat‐stirred vessel and represents the viscoelastic behavior of non‐Newtonian fluid, was used to present unified expressions for k L a in Newtonian as well as non‐Newtonian liquid. The values of k L a in the aqueous colloidal silica solution were reduced due to elasticity of the solution.</P>
Adsorption Characteristics and pH-dependence of Metsulfuron-Methyl onto Activated Carbons
Kim, Seoung-Hyun,Ngo, Huu-Hao M. Dekker 2007 Separation science and technology Vol.42 No.8
<P> The adsorption characteristics of metsulfuron-methyl (MM) onto powdered activated carbon (PAC) and granular activated carbon (GAC) were studied at varying solution pHs (4-9) and temperatures (20-40°C). The dependence of pH was observed in aqueous solution with MM. The film mass transfer and intraparticle diffusion coefficients were estimated from concentration decay curves obtained in the batch adsorber. The maximum adsorption capacity decreased with increasing pH and temperature. Among the PAC used, the coconut based PAC had the best adsorption capacity. The adsorption isotherms could be plotted using the Freundlich and Toth models with a reasonable degree of accuracy. The overall adsorption isotherm such as the modified-Toth model should be applied. The performances of the fixed-bed GAC system was also simulated by a model developed. The objective of the present study was to investigate the adsorption and pH dependence behavior of MM onto PAC and GAC in order to diminish the environmental risk of MM pollution.</P>
