      • How to Incorporate Women's History into History Education : A Suggestion for World History Class

Lee, Chong-Kyung,Kim, Geena Asia Teacher Education Consortium 2009 Asian Journal of Teacher Education Vol.1 No.1

The aim of this thesis is to find out ways of incorporating women's history into history education. To achieve this goal, this thesis first tries to set criteria for selecting and prioritizing the contents of women's history to be covered in world history class. Then it attempts to show some women figures of the European Middle Ages who are well fitted to these criteria. Three criteria are proposed. The first one is the appreciation of femininity at its own value. This view makes it possible to draw a more accurate portrayal of women and their behaviors without male-oriented bias. The second one is the greater emphasis on the process rather than the end-results. By this way women without the so-called visible accomplishments can be the subjects of historical research. We may also be able to reevaluate some "wicked" women of the traditional society positively. The last one is the recognition of the distinctiveness of the feminine experience. Women took usually part in their society with womanly strategy and ways different from those of men. On the basis of these three criteria, we introduce the following women as examples: The Merovingian queens, Brunhild and Balthild, who displayed political abilities in the political sphere with the adroit utilization of private networking sources; Eleanor of Aquitaine whose seemingly glorious life in public view might be different from the real one she had to undergo in the world; Hildegard of Bingen and Joan of Arc who played significant roles by their own respective womanly ways.

      • Sociocultural Factors Affecting Transfer of Learning for School Teachers

Kim, Hanbyul Asia Teacher Education Consortium 2009 Asian Journal of Teacher Education Vol.1 No.1

This study is aimed at exploring how organizational power is used and how it affects training transfer of school teachers. Adopting qualitative research design, three in-depth, open-ended interviews were conducted with Korean public school teachers. The findings show that both the teachers' relationship with senior teachers who hold referent power and the teachers' legitimate power derived from their own role status within the school signal their capacity to transfer what they learned. This study also reveals that national policies and guidelines that are imposed enable teachers to self-regulate the aspect of transfer. Understanding transfer as a sociocultural process helps us grasp more plausible transfer systems for school teachers.
