<P>The vascular relaxant effect of the rhizome extract of Rheum undulatum was evaluated with isolated rat thoracic aorta preparations. The methanol extract of the rhizome induced a concentration-dependent relaxation of aortic preparations precontracted with 0.3 µm phenylephrine (EC50 value: 5.8 µg/mL). The activity-guided fractionation of the extract led to the isolation of seven hydroxystilbene components as active principles, i.e. piceatannol, resveratrol, desoxyrhapontigenin, rhapontigenin, piceid, rhaponticin and ϵ-viniferin. Of these, piceatannol, a tetrahydroxystilbene, exhibited the most potent vascular relaxant effect in rat aortic preparations (EC50 value 2.4 µm). The vasorelaxant effect of piceatannol on endothelium-intact aorta rings was diminished completely by the removal of functional endothelium or by pretreatment of the aortic tissues with NG-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester. These results suggest that piceatannol may be the major mediator responsible for the vasorelaxing properties of the rhizome extract of Rheum undulatum and the vasorelaxant effects of the piceatannol may be mediated via endothelium-dependent nitric oxide signaling pathway. <P>In this research article, instant glue (IG) is proposed as a novel material for the passivation layer of indium-gallium-zinc oxide (IGZO) thin-film transistors (TFTs). This material can be deposited using a facile solution process and annealed at a low temperature of 150 °C for 1 min. The IGZO TFTs with an IG passivation layer (PVL) exhibit improved electrical characteristics as well as stability under positive bias stress compared to those without a PVL: field effect mobility from 10.23 to 12.66 cm2 V−1 s−1, subthreshold swing from 0.36 to 0.35 V per decade, on/off ratio from 1.6 × 108 to 5.21 × 108, and threshold voltage shift from 4.00 to 2.32 V. These improvements are attributed to the modification of the chemical stoichiometry of the IGZO films and the blocking of the adsorption of moisture and oxygen. Furthermore, by depositing IG materials selectively on IGZO films <I>via</I> the drop casting method, it was confirmed that an IG PVL can be fabricated at the desired location as well as in a large area due to the high adhesive strength and viscosity of IG.</P>

<P>We have investigated effect of thin TiO2 layers deposited on an indium tin oxide (ITO)/fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) double-layered transparent conductive oxide on the performance of dye-sensitized solar cell. FTO is deposited on an ITO-coated glass, followed by TiO2 deposition using a radio frequency magnetron sputtering technique. The thicknesses of the sputtered-TiO2 layers are varied from 10 nm to 20 nm, while the ITO and FTO are fixed to be 150 nm and 70 nm, respectively. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) shows that the surface roughness is similar but the surface morphology is altered by thin TiO2 layer deposition. The sheet resistance of the ITO/FTO conductive glass is hardly changed by thin TiO2 layer deposition. Photovoltaic performance is significantly enhanced after introduction of thin TiO2 underlayer. The 15 nm thick TiO2 underlayer leads to the increases of photocurrent density from 9 mA cm−2 to 10.3 mA cm−2 and fill factor from 0.715 to 0.747, as a result, the overall conversion efficiency is improved from 5.28% to 6.37%, corresponding to 20.6% increase. Photovoltage, however, remains almost unchanged. Photocurrent is improved over the entire wavelength. The increased transmittance at wavelength ranging from 300 to 600 nm contributes in part to increase in photocurrent. Improvement of charge collection efficiency from ∼90% to ∼97% is also attributed to the increased photocurrent, where the increased transport rate is responsible for the improved charge collection, indicating that the thin TiO2 underlayer has influence on opto-electronic property in the dye-adsorbed bulk TiO2 film.</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>A thin TiO2 layer 15 nm thick was deposited on an ITO/FTO bilayered transparent conductive substrate by radio frequency magnetron sputtering, which improved charge collection efficiency from 90% to 97% in dye-sensitized solar cells. <IMG SRC='http://pubs.rsc.org/services/images/RSCpubs.ePlatform.Service.FreeContent.ImageService.svc/ImageService/image/GA?id=b926145a'> </P>

Purpose: To identify prognostic factors for disease progression and survival of patients with extracranial oligometastatic breast cancer (EOMBC), and to investigate the role of radiation therapy (RT) for metastatic lesions. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 50 patients who had been diagnosed with EOMBC following standard treatment for primary breast cancer initially, and received RT for metastatic lesions, with or without other systemic therapy between January 2004 and December 2008. EOMBC was defined as breast cancer with five or less metastases involving any organs except the brain. All patients had bone metastasis (BM) and seven patients had pulmonary, hepatic, or lymph node metastasis. Median RT dose applied to metastatic lesions was 30 Gy (range, 20 to 60 Gy). Results: The 5-year tumor local control (LC) and 3-year distant progression-free survival (DPFS) rate were 66.1% and 36.8%, respectively. High RT dose (${\geq}50Gy_{10}$) was significantly associated with improved LC. The 5-year overall survival (OS) rate was 49%. Positive hormone receptor status, pathologic nodal stage of primary cancer, solitary BM, and whole-lesion RT (WLRT), defined as RT whose field encompassed entire extent of disease, were associated with better survival. On analysis for subgroup of solitary BM, high RT dose was significantly associated with improved LC and DPFS, shorter metastasis-to-RT interval (${\leq}1month$) with improved DPFS, and WLRT with improved DPFS and OS, respectively. Conclusion: High-dose RT in solitary BM status and WLRT have the potential to improve the progression-free survival and OS of patients with EOMBC.

<P>[Purpose] This study compared the activations of the upper trapezius (UT) and serratus anterior (SA) muscles and the SA/UT activation ratio during dynamic and isometric exercises on various support surfaces. [Subjects] We recruited 12 male subjects, all right-side dominant and with no congenital deformities in the upper extremities and no orthopedic or neurological disorders. [Methods] Push-ups and push-ups plus position maintenance exercises were performed on three different base surfaces: a wobble board, dual wobble boards, and a one-sided wobble board. Electromyography activities of the SA and UT muscles were recorded. [Results] The SA/UT ratio was significantly higher when dynamic exercises were performed using the one-sided wobble board than when they were performed on a normal wobble board or with dual wobble boards. The SA/UT ratio was significantly higher when isometric exercises were performed using a wobble board than when they were performed with a one-sided wobble board. [Conclusion] For clinical applications with a goal of selected SA muscle strengthening, greater benefit is achieved with isometric exercises performed on an unstable support surface and dynamic exercises performed on a stable support surface, as measured by the SA/UT ratio.</P>

<P> [Purpose] The purpose of this paper is to report the effect of individual strengthening exercises for the anterior pelvic tilt muscles on back pain, pelvic tilt angle, and lumbar ROM of a low back pain (LBP) patient with flat back. [Subject] A 37 year-old male, who complained of LBP pain at L3-5 levels with flat back, participated. [Methods] He performed the individual strengthening exercises for anterior pelvic tilt muscles (erector spinae, iliopsoas, rectus femoris). [Results] Pelvic tilt angles of the right and left sides were recovered to normal ranges. His lumbar ROMs increased, and low back pain decreased. [Conclusion] We suggest that individual resistance exercises are a necessary approach for effective and fast strengthening of pelvic anterior tilt muscles in LBP with flat back.</P>
