Cybersecurity knowledge and skills for port facility security officers of international seaports: Perspectives of IT and security personnel

Senarak Chalermpong 한국해운물류학회 2021 The Asian journal of shipping and Logistics Vol.37 No.4

Cyberattacks on worldwide port facilities have highlighted the urgent need for port facility security officers (PFSOs) to upgrade their cybersecurity knowledge and skills. This study used the survey data from all international container ports in Thailand and analyzed the results from two perspectives, i.e., IT and security officers. Based on 73 responses, cybersecurity knowledge and skill would become essential for PFSOs than ever before because the port digitalization and automation would shape the PFSOs career to a technically- oriented specialist rather than a multi-skilled generalist. Furthermore, the responsibilities of PFSOs would extend to cover cyber risk management, which enables them to prevent the digital port facilities from emerging cyber threats. Therefore, they should learn how to incorporate the existing risk management process with cyber risk management and cybersecurity knowledge because these would be the foundation for PFSOs to practice cybersecurity skills. At the end of the learning process, PFSOs could also gain cyber security competence once they have mature knowledge and skill, which would be the vital element of port security hygiene.

Shipping-collaboration model for the new generation of container port in innovation district: A case of Eastern Economic Corridor

Senarak Chalermpong 한국해운물류학회 2020 The Asian journal of shipping and Logistics Vol.36 No.2

The current study contributed to the literature by developing a prototype of the shipping-collaboration model illustrating what container ports should do individually or in collaboration with their users as an innovation-district member. The variables contained in the model were drawn from existing literature, and were used to develop a survey regarding the expected collaboration attributes of the users of Laem Chabang Port with the terminal operators in the context of Sriracha Innovation District (SID) Project. The questionnaire was purposively distributed to the strategy managers and senior supervisors of the shipping lines and freight forwarder companies. Based on 288 responses, path analysis was adopted to develop the shipping-collaboration model. The positive impacts of shipping collaboration on the development goals of the SID project highlighted the new agenda for terminal operators, including port authority and users, as SID members to develop new collaborative strategies. Among these, the port’s digitalization and adoption of environmentally-friendly technology played a notable role in improving the capacity, energy efficiency, and sustainability of the container port.

Port cybersecurity and threat: A structural model for prevention and policy development

Senarak Chalermpong 한국해운물류학회 2021 The Asian journal of shipping and Logistics Vol.37 No.1

Most port operators have increasingly integrated cybertechnology into port activities to increase their competitiveness; unfortunately, this digitalization becomes the major vulnerability for the emerging cyberthreat. To help port policymakers develop cybersecurity measures, this study conceptualized and developed three dimensions of port cybersecurity hygiene (i.e. human, infrastructure, and procedure factors) and investigated the relationships between port cybersecurity hygiene and cyberthreats (i.e. hacktivism, cyber criminality, cyber espionage, cyber terrorism, and cyber war). A questionnaire survey was used to collect data from all international container port operators and shipping lines with branches in Thailand, and the proposed relationships were tested by structural equation modeling. The results indicated that container ports tended to encounter hacktivism when their human, infrastructure, and procedure factors were vulnerable. The weakness of the human factor could also lead to cyber terrorism, while the deficiency of the infrastructure factor could lead to cyber criminality. Moreover, container ports were likely to be harmed by cyber espionage if their procedure factor was poorly implemented. Hence, the provision of training and education to all port workers, including top executives, managers, and supervisors, are necessary to ensure a cyberthreat-awareness culture at all organizational levels. Improving cybersecurity equipment could prevent unauthorized access to port business data and keep important information secure, while the ISPS Code-based procedures and other preventive measures should be strictly implemented by container ports to reduce the risk of cyberthreats.

      • Health Behavior after A Multiprofessional Intervention and Training for Ongoing Volunteer-Based Community Health Programme Intervention in the North-East of Thailand: What Changed and What not?

Saranrittichai, Kesinee,Senarak, Wiporn,Promthet, Supannee,Wiangnon, Surapon,Vatanasapt, Patravoot,Kamsa-ard, Supot,Wongphuthorn, Prasert,Moore, Malcolm Anthony Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.9

This qualitative research within the project entitled "Multiprofessional Intervention and training for Ongoing Volunteer-based Community Health Programs in the Northeast of Thailand (MITV-NET)" was aimed at explaining changes of health behavior of community people in the Northeast after the intervention. The participants comprised 15 community volunteers and 27 villagers. Data were collected by indepth interview, focus group discussion, participation and non-participation observation, and note taking. Analyses were conducted in parallel with data collection, through content and comparative analysis. It was found that the health behavior fell into 2 categories: easy-to-change. The former involved fun activities joined by community people that improved their health or made them recover from illnesses after a short period without becoming addicted. These activities could be done by themselves, for example, exercising and cooking. The difficult-to-change health behavior is habitual, for example, chewing betel nuts or eating uncooked food. The following factors were found affecting behavioral changes: 1) underlying disease; 2) enjoyment in doing activities; 3) habitual behaviour; 4) improved health in a short period; 5) ability of community leaders and volunteers; and 6) community health-supporting resources. It is suggested that improving people's health requires cooperation of community people through fun activities and some initial external support. People who persist in bad habits should be encouraged to stop by showing them health deteriorating effects.

      • Evaluation of Health Education in the Multi-professional Intervention and Training for Ongoing Volunteer-based Community Health Programme in the North-East of Thailand

        Promthet, Supannee,Wiangnon, Surapon,Senarak, Wiporn,Saranrittichai, Kesinee,Vatanasapt, Patravoot,Kamsa-ard, Supot,Wongphuthorn, Prasert,Kasinpila, Chananya,Moore, Malcolm Anthony Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.5

This was a survey research conducted in Northestern Thailand during 2009-2010 and designed to evaluate the success of a health education program by comparing levels of health knowledge in the community before and after the launching of a Multi-professional Intervention and Training for Ongoing Volunteer-based Community Health Programme. The survey questionnaire included items about demographic characteristics and health knowledge. The participants were 1,015 members of various communities, who were randomly selected to be included in the survey before launching the intervention, and 1,030 members of the same communities randomly selected to be included in the survey after the intervention was completed. The demographic characteristics of both groups were similar. Overall knowledge and knowledge of all the diseases, except lung and cervical cancer, were significantly higher after the intervention. In conclusion, a Volunteer-based Community Health Programme has advantages for areas where the numbers of health personnel are limited. The use of trained community health volunteers may be one of the best sustainable alternative means for the transfer of health knowledge.
