Free vibration analysis of a three-layered microbeam based on strain gradient theory and three-unknown shear and normal deformation theory

Mohammad Arefi,Ashraf M. Zenkour 국제구조공학회 2018 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.26 No.4

Free vibration analysis of a three-layered microbeam including an elastic micro-core and two piezo-magnetic face-sheets resting on Pasternak's foundation are studied in this paper. Strain gradient theory is used for size-dependent modeling of microbeam. In addition, three-unknown shear and normal deformations theory is employed for description of displacement field. Hamilton's principle is used for derivation of the governing equations of motion in electro-magneto-mechanical loads. Three micro-length-scale parameters based on strain gradient theory are employed for prediction of vibrational characteristics of structure in micro-scale. The results show that increase of three micro-length-scale parameters leads to significant increase of three natural frequencies especially for increase of second micro-length-scale parameter. This result is according to this fact that stiffness of a micro-scale structure is increased with increase of micro-length-scale parameters.

Nonlinear electromechanical analysis of a functionally graded square plate integrated with smart layers resting on Winkler-Pasternak foundation

Mohammad Arefi 국제구조공학회 2015 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.16 No.1

This paper presents nonlinear analysis of a functionally graded square plate integrated with two functionally graded piezoelectric layers resting on the Winkler-Pasternak foundation. Geometric nonlinearity was considered in the strain-displacement relation based on the Von-Karman assumption. All the mechanical and electrical properties except Poisson\'s ratio can vary continuously along the thickness of the plate based on a power function. Electric potential was assumed as a quadratic function along the thickness direction and trigonometric function along the planar coordinate. The effect of non homogeneous index was investigated on the responses of the system. Furthermore, a comprehensive investigation has been performed for studying the effect of two parameters of assumed foundation on the mechanical and electrical components. A comparison between linear and nonlinear responses of the system presents necessity of this study.

Elastic solution of a curved beam made of functionally graded materials with different cross sections

Mohammad Arefi 국제구조공학회 2015 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.18 No.3

This research deals with the analytical solution of a curved beam with different shapes made of functionally graded materials (FGM's). It was assumed that modulus of elasticity is graded along the thickness direction of curved beam based on a power function. The beam was loaded under pure bending. Using the linear theory of elasticity, the general relation for radial distribution of radial and circumferential stresses of arbitrary cross section was derived. The effect of nonhomogeneity was considered on the radial distribution of circumferential stress. This behavior can be investigated for positive and negative values of nonhomogeneity index. The novelty of this study is application of the obtained results for different combination of material properties and cross sections. Achieved results indicate that employing different nonhomogeneity index and selection of various types of cross sections (rectangular, triangular or circular) can control the distribution of radial and circumferential stresses as designer want and propose new solutions by these options. Increasing the nonhomogeneity index for positive or negative values of nonhomogeneity index and for various cross sections presents different behaviors along the thickness direction. In order to validate the present research, the results of this research can be compared with previous result for reachable cross sections and non homogeneity index.

Size-dependent free vibration and dynamic analyses of a sandwich microbeam based on higher-order sinusoidal shear deformation theory and strain gradient theory

        Mohammad Arefi,Elyas Mohammad-Rezaei Bidgoli,Ashraf M. Zenkour 국제구조공학회 2018 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.22 No.1

The governing equations of motion are derived for analysis of a sandwich microbeam in this paper. The sandwich microbeam is including an elastic micro-core and two piezoelectric micro-face-sheets. The microbeam is subjected to transverse loads and two-dimensional electric potential. Higher-order sinusoidal shear deformation beam theory is used for description of displacement field. To account size dependency in governing equations of motion, strain gradient theory is used to mention higher-order stress and strains. An analytical approach for simply-supported sandwich microbeam with short-circuited electric potential is proposed. The numerical results indicate that various types of parameters such as foundation and material length scales have significant effects on the free vibration responses and dynamic results. Investigation on the influence of material length scales indicates that increase of both dimensionless material length scale parameters leads to significant changes of vibration and dynamic responses of microbeam.

Two-dimensional thermo-elastic analysis of FG-CNTRC cylindrical pressure vessels

        Mohammad Arefi,Masoud Mohammadi,Ali Tabatabaeian,Rossana Dimitri,Francesco Tornabene 국제구조공학회 2018 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.27 No.4

This paper focuses on the application of the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) to thermo-elastic static problems of functionally graded carbon nanotubes reinforced composite (FG-CNTRC) cylindrical pressure vessels. A symmetric displacement field is considered as unknown function along the longitudinal direction, whereas a linear distribution is assumed along the thickness direction. The cylindrical pressure vessels are subjected to an inner and outer pressure under a temperature increase. Different patterns of reinforcement are applied as distribution of CNTs. The effective material properties of FG-CNTRC cylindrical pressure vessels are measured based on the rule of mixture, whereas the governing equations of the problem are here derived through the principle of virtual works. A large parametric investigation studies the effect of some significant parameters, such as the pattern and volume fraction of CNTs, on the longitudinal distribution of deformation, strain and stress components, as useful tool for practical engineering applications.

Nonlinear and linear thermo-elastic analyses of a functionally graded spherical shell using the Lagrange strain tensor

Mohammad Arefi,Ashraf M. Zenkour 국제구조공학회 2017 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.19 No.1

This research tries to present a nonlinear thermo-elastic solution for a functionally graded spherical shell subjected to mechanical and thermal loads. Geometric nonlinearity is considered using the Lagrange or finite strain tensor. Non-homogeneous material properties are considered based on a power function. Adomian\'s decomposition method is used for calculation of nonlinear results. Nonlinear results such as displacement can be evaluated for sphere in terms of different indexes of non-homogeneity. A comprehensive comparison between linear and nonlinear results and evaluation of the percentage of difference between them can be performed in this paper. The obtained results indicate that the improvement of the results due to usage of nonlinear analysis is depending on the non-homogeneous index.

Nonlocal free vibration analysis of a doubly curved piezoelectric nano shell

Mohammad Arefi 국제구조공학회 2018 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.27 No.4

In this paper nonlocal free vibration analysis of a doubly curved piezoelectric nano shell is studied. First order shear deformation theory and nonlocal elasticity theory is employed to derive governing equations of motion based on Hamilton's principle. The doubly curved piezoelectric nano shell is resting on Pasternak's foundation. A parametric study is presented to investigate the influence of significant parameters such as nonlocal parameter, two radii of curvature, and ratio of radius to thickness on the fundamental frequency of doubly curved piezoelectric nano shell.

Nonlinear responses of an arbitrary FGP circular plate resting on the Winkler-Pasternak foundation

Mohammad Arefi,M.N.M. Allam 국제구조공학회 2015 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.16 No.1

This paper presents nonlinear analysis of an arbitrary functionally graded circular plate integrated with two functionally graded piezoelectric layers resting on the Winkler-Pasternak foundation. Geometric nonlinearity is considered in the strain-displacement relation based on the Von-Karman assumption. All the mechanical and electrical properties except Poisson\'s ratio can vary continuously along the thickness of the plate based on a power function. Electric potential is assumed as a quadratic function along the thickness direction. After derivation of general nonlinear equations, as an instance, numerical results of a functionally graded material integrated with functionally graded piezoelectric material obeying two different functionalities is investigated. The effect of different parameters such as parameters of foundation, non homogenous index and boundary conditions can be investigated on the mechanical and electrical results of the system. A comprehensive comparison between linear and nonlinear responses of the system presents necessity of this study. Furthermore, the obtained results can be validated by using previous linear and nonlinear analyses after removing the effect of foundation.

Mohammad Arefi,Sina Kiani Moghaddam 국제구조공학회 2019 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.71 No.1

In this study we derive the governing equations of a functionally graded piezoelectric disk, subjected to thermo-electro-mechanical loads. First order shear deformation theory is used for description of displacement field. Principles of minimum potential energy is used to derive governing equations in terms of components of the displacement field and the electric potential. The governing equations are derived for a disk with variable thickness. The numerical results are presented in terms of important parameters of the problem such as profile of variable thickness, in-homogeneous index and other related parameters.

Creep analysis of the FG cylinders: Time-dependent non-axisymmetric behavior

Mohammad Arefi,Mehrdad Nasr,Abbas Loghman 국제구조공학회 2018 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.28 No.3

In this paper history of stresses, strains, radial and circumferential displacements of a functionally graded thick-walled hollow cylinder due to creep phenomenon is investigated. The cylinder is subjected to an arbitrary non-axisymmetric two dimensional thermo-mechanical loading and uniform magnetic field along axial direction. Using equilibrium, strain-displacements and stress-strain relations, the governing differential equations of the problem containing creep strains are derived in terms of radial and circumferential displacements. Since the displacements are varying with time due to creep phenomenon, an analytical solution is not available for these equations. Thus, a semi-analytical procedure based on separation of variables and Fourier series together with a numerical procedure is employed. The numerical results indicate that the non-axisymmetric loading and the material grading index have significant effect on stress redistributions. Moreover, by proper selection of material for any combination of non-axisymmetric loading, one can arrive suitable response for the cylinder to achieve optimal design. With some simplifications, the results are validated with the existing literature.
