      • Controlled synthesis of mesoporous codoped titania nanoparticles and their photocatalytic activity

        The photocatalytic (PC) activity of anatase titania nanoparticles can be improved through codoping with transition metals and nitrogen. In addition, the PC activity can also be improved by creating monodisperse, mesoporous nanoparticles of titania. The question naturally arose as to whether combining these two characteristics would result in further improvement in the PC activity or not. Herein, we describe the synthesis and photocatalytic characteristics of codoped, monodisperse anatase titania. The transition metals tested in the polydisperse and the monodisperse forms were Mn, Co, Ni, and Cu. In each case, it was found that the monodisperse version had a higher PC activity compared to the corresponding polydisperse version.

      • Structual Ambiguity and Conceptural Information Retrieval

        Many researches found lexical preferences to be critical in resolving attachment ambiguity [WFB 90][FBK 82][ MP 80]. Most notably, information from Verb-Obj-Prep-Noun structures (VOPN) has been used to show that LA is very effective in the resolution of PP-attachment ambiguity [HR. 93]. We investigated extensions to the lexical association strategy. The extensions include using conceptual association and acquiring the association information from different kind of lexical relations not limited to relations in VOPN structures. We refer to this approach as DeepAttach. Thus, it is possible to take information from all kinds of syntactical structures as long as they are alternations of a common deep structure [PU93] related to that implied by the intended attachment. A collection of sense-disambiguated sentences serves as the source of conceptual relations. No pre-processing is done to find the conceptual relations in these sentences. Instead, information retrieval technique is used to retrieve conceptually most relevant sentences using the words from the ambiguous structure as query. The prepositional phrase is then attached in favor of the constituent that has more conceptual presence in the ranked retrieved sentences. An experiment was implemented to embody the idea. The result shows that 75% of pP``s in 260 VOPN structures can be attached correctly, when simple lexical relevance was considered.

      • Tensile behavior of hydrogen-charged 316L stainless steel at elevated temperatures

        We examined the high-temperature tensile properties of 316L austenite stainless steel (SS) cathodically charged with hydrogen (H) and discussed how the H distribution, strain rate, and temperature range affected the mechanical properties of 316L SS at elevated temperatures, with particular focus on dynamic strain aging (DSA). A preheat treatment was applied prior to each high-temperature tensile test to lessen the H gradient on the outer surface of the specimen. DSA, manifested by serrations in the stress-strain curve, was observed at temperatures between 400 and 500<SUP>o</SUP>C and was analyzed using strain-rate sensitivity, dynamic strain-hardening stress, and the temperature dependence of critical serration strain. In particular, this study confined its scope to the influence of H in the range of a few tens of parts per million.

        Computational design of an automotive twist beam

        In recent years, the automotive industry has known a remarkable development in order to satisfy the customer requirements. In this paper, we will study one of the components of the automotive which is the twist beam. The study is focused on the multicriteria design of the automotive twist beam undergoing linear elastic deformation (Hooke's law). Indeed, for the design of this automotive part, there are some criteria to be considered as the rigidity (stiffness) and the resistance to fatigue. Those two criteria are known to be conflicting, therefore, our aim is to identify the Pareto front of this problem. To do this, we used a Normal Boundary Intersection (NBI) algorithm coupling with a radial basis function (RBF) metamodel in order to reduce the high calculation time needed for solving the multicriteria design problem. Otherwise, we used the free form deformation (FFD) technique for the generation of the 3D shapes of the automotive part studied during the optimization process.

        Multicriteria shape design of an aerosol can

        One of the current challenges in the domain of the multicriteria shape optimization is to reduce the calculation time required by conventional methods. The high computational cost is due to the high number of simulation or function calls required by these methods. Recently, several studies have been led to overcome this problem by integrating a metamodel in the overall optimization loop. In this paper, we perform a coupling between the Normal Boundary Intersection - NBI - algorithm with Radial Basis Function - RBF - metamodel in order to have a simple tool with a reasonable calculation time to solve multicriteria optimization problems. First, we apply our approach to academic test cases. Then, we validate our method against an industrial case, namely, shape optimization of the bottom of an aerosol can undergoing nonlinear elasto-plastic deformation. Then, in order to select solutions among the Pareto efficient ones, we use the same surrogate approach to implement a method to compute Nash and Kalai-Smorodinsky equilibria.

      • Ground Aerosols of Ultra-Low-Volume Premium-Sumithion for the Control of Culex tritaeniorhynchus in Pusan, Korea

        Ultra-low-volume applications of Premium-Sumithion at the dosage of 483$m\ell$ Per hectare by vehicle mounted ground LECO ULV generator have carried out in Sasang, Pusan to control Culex tritaeniorhynchus within about 75 hectares of this area in 1972-1973. Hignly effective adult reduction was obtained, and lasted for five days after treatment. In addition the residual activity of insecticide larger droplets in the mosquito breeding places reduced the larval populations in 1973. The logistic advantageous of early morning treatment over evening treatment are discussed. 1972-1973년도 2년간에 걸쳐서 작은빨간집모기 (Culex tritaeniorhynchus)를 구제하고자 차량지상초미입자(ULV) 살충제살포 방법으로 Premium-Sumithion(98%) 원액을 헥타당 438$m\ell$의 기준으로 부산사상지역에서 75헥타에 살포하였다. 살포작업 실시후 약 5일간 모기 성충은 70% 정도의 구제효과를 나타냈고 살충제 입자의 잔류로 인하여 모기서식장소에서 유충도 약 5일간 구제효과가 있었다. 1972년에 실시되었던 야간과 조조작업에서 야간보다 더 좋은 구제효과를 보여 주었다.

        <P>Aire impacts immunological tolerance by regulating the expression of a large set of genes in thymic medullary epithelial cells, thereby controlling the repertoire of self-antigens encountered by differentiating thymocytes. Both humans and mice lacking Aire develop multiorgan autoimmunity. Currently, there are few molecular details on how Aire performs this crucial function. The more amino-terminal of its two plant homeodomains (PHDs), PHD1, helps Aire target poorly transcribed loci by 'reading' the methylation status of a particular lysine residue of histone-3, a process that does not depend on the more carboxyl-terminal PHD-2. This study addresses the role of PHD2 in Aire function by comparing the behavior of wild-type and PHD2-deleted Aire in both transfected cells and transgenic mice. PHD2 was required for Aire to interact with sets of protein partners involved in chromatin structure/binding or transcription but not with those implicated in pre-mRNA processing; it also was not required for Aire's nuclear translocation or regional distribution. PHD2 strongly influenced the ability of Aire to regulate the medullary epithelial cell transcriptome and so was crucial for effective central tolerance induction. Thus, Aire's two PHDs seem to play distinct roles in the scenario by which it assures immunological tolerance.</P>

      • Regulatory T cells generated early in life play a distinct role in maintaining self-tolerance

        <P><B>Early T cells keep autoimmunity at bay</B></P><P>A major challenge faced by the immune system is to react to foreign substances, such as microbes, while simultaneously tolerating the self. Upsetting this balance leads to autoimmunity. Regulatory T cells (T<SUB>regs</SUB>), are a subset of immune cells that help to maintain this balance. Yang <I>et al.</I> found that murine T<SUB>reg</SUB> cells generated very early in life are distinct from those generated in older animals and play an especially important role in keeping autoimmunity in check (see the Perspective by Tanaka and Sakaguchi). These changes are due to differences in the way T<SUB>regs</SUB> develop in the thymus in newborn versus adult mice.</P><P><I>Science</I>, this issue p. 589; see also p. 506</P><P>Aire is an important regulator of immunological tolerance, operating in a minute subset of thymic stromal cells to induce transcripts encoding peptides that guide T cell selection. Expression of Aire during a perinatal age window is necessary and sufficient to prevent the multiorgan autoimmunity characteristic of Aire-deficient mice. We report that Aire promotes the perinatal generation of a distinct compartment of Foxp3<SUP>+</SUP>CD4<SUP>+</SUP> regulatory T (T<SUB>reg</SUB>) cells, which stably persists in adult mice. This population has a role in maintaining self-tolerance, a transcriptome and an activation profile distinguishable from those of T<SUB>regs</SUB> produced in adults. Underlying the distinct T<SUB>reg</SUB> populations are age-dependent, Aire-independent differences in the processing and presentation of thymic stromal-cell peptides, resulting in different T cell receptor repertoires. Our findings expand the notion of a developmentally layered immune system.</P>
