A general solution to structural performance of pre-twisted Euler beam subject to static load

        Ying Huang,Chang Hong Chen,Leon M. Keer,Yao Yao 국제구조공학회 2017 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.64 No.2

Based on the coupled elastic bending deformation features and relationships between the internal force and deformation of pre-twisted Euler beam, the generalized strain, the equivalent constitutive equation and the equilibrium equation of pre-twisted Euler beam are developed. Based on the properties of the dual-antisymmetric matrix, the general solution of pretwisted Euler beam is obtained. By comparison with ANSYS solution by using straight Beam-188 element based on infinite approach strategy, the results show that the developed method is available for pre-twisted Euler beam and also provide an accuracy displacement interpolation function for the subsequent finite element analysis. The effect of pre-twisted angle on the mechanical property has been investigated.

Investigation on the seismic performance of T-shaped column joints

        Changhong Chen,He Gong,Yao Yao,Ying Huang,Leon M. Keer 사단법인 한국계산역학회 2018 Computers and Concrete, An International Journal Vol.21 No.3

More and more special-shaped structural systems have been widely used in various industrial and civil buildings in order to satisfy the new structural system and the increasing demand for architectural beauty. With the popularity of the specialshaped structure system, its seismic performance and damage form have also attracted extensive attention. In the current research, an experimental analysis of six groups of (2/3 scale) T-shaped column joints was conducted to investigate the seismic performance of T-shaped column joints. Effects of the beam cross section, transverse stirrup ratio and axial compression ratio on bearing capacity and energy dissipation capacity of column joints were obtained. The crack pattern of T-shaped column joints under low cyclic load was presented and showed a reversed “K” mode. According to the crack configurations, a tensile-shear failure model to determine the shear bearing capacity and crack propagation mechanisms is developed.

      • Component-based model for posttensioned steel connections against progressive collapse

        Yan Fei Zhu,Chang Hong Chen,Ying Huang,Zhaohui Huang,Yao Yao,Leon M. Keer 국제구조공학회 2021 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.40 No.4

A component-based method for the estimation of the posttensioned (PT) steel frame against progressive collapse is proposed and presented in the current paper. A mechanical model of PT steel connections is developed and benchmarked with experimental data of a PT beam-column substructure from literature. The developd mechanical models of four PT connections are able to capture the initial elastic stiffness, decompression load, and residual stiffness under lateral loading. Then, analysis of a reduced-scale three-storey two-bay PT steel frame is carried out with sufficient accuracy by incorporating the proposed joint model into the frame analysis. The proposed method is then applied to assessing progressive collapse of a one-storey two-bay PT frame under middle column removal scenario, and is verified against existing experimental and ANSYS finite element results. Three resistance mechanism for progressive collapse of the PT frame are evaluated, which consists of angle flexural mechanism, beam compression arching action and strand tensile catenary action. Finally, parameter analyses of the PT frames are conducted to investigate the effects of the connection details on the behavior and resistance of progressive collapse. The proposed model can be used to predict the quasi-static behavior of PT frames under monotonic vertical loading conditions with satisfactory accuracy.

The linear elastic stiffness matrix model analysis of pre twisted Euler Bernoulli beam

        Ying Huang,Haoran Zou,Chang Hong Chen,Songlin Bai,Yao Yao,Leon M. Keer 국제구조공학회 2019 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.72 No.5

Based on the finite element method of traditional straight Euler-Bernoulli beams and the coupled relations between linear displacement and angular displacement of a pre-twisted Euler-Bernoulli beam, the shape functions and stiffness matrix are deduced. Firstly, the stiffness of pre-twisted Euler-Bernoulli beam is developed based on the traditional straight Euler-Bernoulli beam. Then, a new finite element model is proposed based on the displacement general solution of a pre-twisted Euler-Bernoulli beam. Finally, comparison analyses are made among the proposed Euler-Bernoulli model, the new numerical model based on displacement general solution and the ANSYS solution by Beam188 element based on infinite approach. The results show that developed numerical models are available for the pre-twisted Euler-Bernoulli beam, and which provide more accurate finite element model for the numerical analysis. The effects of pre-twisted angle and flexural stiffness ratio on the mechanical property are investigated.

Dynamic increase factor for progressive collapse analysis of semi-rigid steel frames

        Yan Fei Zhu,Chang Hong Chen,Yao Yao,Leon M. Keer,Ying Huang 국제구조공학회 2018 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.28 No.2

An empirical and efficient method is presented for calculating the dynamic increase factor to amplify the applied loads on the affected bays of a steel frame structure with semi-rigid connections. The nonlinear static alternate path analysis is used to evaluate the dynamic responses. First, the polynomial models of the extended end plate and the top and seat connection are modified, and the proposed polynomial model of the flush end plate connection shows good agreement as compared with experimental results. Next, a beam model with nonlinear spring elements and plastic hinges is utilized to incorporate the combined effect of connection flexibility and material nonlinearity. A new step-by-step analysis procedure is established to obtain quickly the dynamic increase factor based on a combination of the pushdown analysis and nonlinear dynamic analysis. Finally, the modified dynamic increase factor equation, defined as a function of the maximum ratio value of energy demand to energy capacity of an affected beam, is derived by curve fitting data points generated by the different analysis cases with different column removal scenarios and five types of semi-rigid connections.
