Arthritic disease is more severe in older rats in a kaolin/carrageenan-induced arthritis model.
Kim, Kyoung Soo,Kim, Myung-Hwan,Yeom, Mijung,Choi, Hyun Mi,Yang, Hyung-In,Yoo, Myung Chul,Hahm, Dae-Hyun Springer International 2012 Rheumatology international Vol.32 No.12

This study examined in an arthritis animal model whether elderly onset rheumatoid arthritis (EORA) is a more severe disease than younger onset rheumatoid arthritis. Arthritis was induced by injecting 5% kaolin/carrageenan into the left tibiotarsal ankles of 18-month-old and 4-week-old rats. Various parameters were measured to evaluate the arthritic progression of kaolin/carrageenan-induced arthritis in the rats. Immunohistochemical staining of arthritic joints was performed to determine the degree of inflammation in old and young rats. Measurements of ankle volume and thickness, arthritic index, number of squeaks, and the paw pressure test showed the 18-month-old rats had more severe disease than the young rats in a kaolin/carrageenan-induced arthritis model. The degree of inflammation and MMP-1 expression of arthritic joints in old rats was significantly higher than that of young rats based on histological evaluation with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining and immunochemistry. More severe disease symptoms were found in old rats with EORA, but the molecular mechanisms still remain to be elucidated. Understanding the molecular mechanisms will be helpful to develop clinical protocols to efficiently treat patients with EORA, which is difficult to control with current protocols.

Background

We investigated the prevalence of diabetic autonomic neuropathy (DAN) and vestibular dysfunction (VD) in diabetic patients with peripheral neuropathy.

Methods

Thirty-five diabetic patients with peripheral neuropathy were enrolled from August 2008 to July 2009. All subjects underwent autonomic function tests. Nineteen of the patients (54.3%) underwent videonystagmography.

Results

Diabetic autonomic neuropathy was observed in 28 patients (80%). A mild degree of autonomic failure was observed in 18 patients (64.3%), and a moderate degree of autonomic failure was observed in ten patients (35.7%). Factors related to DAN included diabetic nephropathy (P=0.032), degree of chronic kidney disease (P=0.003), and duration of diabetes (P=0.044). Vestibular dysfunction was observed in 11 of 19 patients (57.9%). There was no significant association between DAN and VD.

Conclusion

Diabetic autonomic neuropathy was observed in 28 diabetic patients (80%) with peripheral neuropathy. Vestibular dysfunction was observed in nearly 60% of diabetic patients with peripheral neuropathy who complained of dizziness but showed no significant association with DAN. Diabetic patients who complained of dizziness need to examine both autonomic function and vestibular function.

Silver Scurf of Potato Caused by Helminthosporium solani
Ryu, Kyoung-Yul,Hahm, Young-Il,Kim, Jeom-Soon,Park, Chun-Soo The Korean Society of Plant Pathology 2000 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.16 No.6
Potate tubers with slver scurf lesions were collected from the cold storage at Pyungchang, Kangwon province in Korea. The causal agent of the silver scurf was identified as Helminthosporium solani by mycological characteristics of conidia and conidiophores. Pathogenicity of the fungus was confirmed by artificial inoculation on the potato tuber. This is the first report of potato silver scarf by Helminthosporium solani in Korea.
