Effects of port-shipping logistics integration on technical and allocative efficiency

It is well known that the international logistics and supply chains are subject to the domination of seaports and shipping lines each with increasingly significant market power. This implies that international supply chains, which typically involves sea transport as a key chain segment, could be subject to the double marginalisation problem. This means, chain operators are likely subject to both technical and allocative efficiency issues. The former is related to the use of inputs in production and distribution, and the latter is generally related to the market structure that affects resource allocation. The current study seeks to study the simultaneous relationships between three components, namely logistics integration, technical efficiency, and allocative efficiency in international container shipping. Exploratory factor analysis and structural equation modelling are conducted using data collected from a survey of global shipping lines. The analysis results show that logistics integration comprises of two main interrelated aspects, namely relational integration, and operational integration. It has significant effects on both technical and allocative efficiency. Technical efficiency and market contestability are affected by relational integration, while allocative efficiency and infrastructure capacity are affected by operational integration. Based on the analysis results, implications for port, terminals and stakeholders are also discussed.
Port efficiency and privatization: Bayesian approach

본 연구에서는 베이지안(Bayesian) 접근법을 활용하여 세계 58개 주요 항만에서 추출한 표본 데이터를 토대로 항만민영화가 항만효율성에 미치는 영향을 실증적으로 분석하였다. 동시에 기존의 고전적 분석과 베이지안 분석 간 결과의 차이를 비교·검토하였다. 연구 결과 항만민영화 자체는 항만효율성에 유의한 영향을 미치지 않음을 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 결과는 항만민영화보다 항만 효율성을 결정하는 다른 중요한 요인들이 존재하고 있으며, 항만이 민영화 정책과 상관없이 항만의 기능과 효율성을 충분히 향상시킬 수 있음을 보여준다. So far studies investigating the relationship between port ownership structure and port efficiency have produced mixed results. This paper therefore contributes to the empirical literature by reinvestigating the impact of port privatization on port efficiency based a sample data drawn from the world’s 58 major ports, using the Bayesian approach. Moreover, it tries to compare the results of the Bayesian approach with the classical approach to see if there are any differences in their results. Ownership per se does not affect port efficiency based on our empirical study. If we exclude pure public ports, the efficiency estimates from both Bayesian and econometric studies are similar to those of Tongzon and Heng (2005) which revealed an inverted U-shaped curve. These findings imply that there may exist other more important factors determining port efficiency than privatization. It is therefore possible for a port to improve its efficiency and performance without necessarily resorting to privatization policy.

According to the demand for services, a single point contract between a user and provider spreads over the industry, and the relationship between them is a main issue. The user wants to make a deal with the contributor which can provide the effective services to the user. This study is to estimate the efficiency of global logistics industry with Data Envelopment Analysis, by nations from 2001 to 2005. Furthermore, it tries to estimate the inefficiency affected by macro factors, and proves the association between them using Tobit model. Global logistics industry has made growth both externally and internally more than doubled for the last 5years. Technical inefficiency of global logistics industry is more influenced by pure technical inefficiency than inefficiency of scale. Therefore, technical efficiency can be increased by decreasing pure technical inefficiency. Through this study, it found that the logistics industry got influenced to its efficiency by high price of oil,and courier and transportation service market is formed stably. Furthermore, it advocates policy planners to consider effectiveness and clearness of policy which influence to inefficiencyof logistics industry. Also, it found that labor and financial support can give critical effect. 세계화를 통해 글로벌 공급사슬은 더욱 복잡해지고, 고객들은 모든 물류서비스를 통합적으로 제공받을 수 있는 기업에 대한 의존도가 높아짐에 따라 고객들은 물류 기업에 대해서 가격뿐만 아니라 운영적인 측면에서 높은 효율성을 요구하고 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 자료포락분석(Data Envelopment Analysis)울 중심으로 전세계 물류산업의 효율성의 추이와 비효율성에 영향을 미치는 요소들에 대한 연구를 진행하였다. 그 결과를 요약하면, 5개년간 세계의 물류산업의 효율성은 높아지는 추세를 보이고 있었으며, 비효율성은 규모에 의한 비효율성보다는 순수기술효율성에 의해 나타난 비효율성에 의해서 나타나고 있었다. 비효율성에 영향을 미치는 외부적인 요소를 살펴보면, 우선 세계화는 비효율성에 영향을 주고 있다. 세계화의 요소 중에서는 경제적인 요소보다는 전반적인 세계화 정도가 더 영향을 미쳤으며, 인프라와 관련되어서는 인력, 금융적 지원, 기반 등 소프트웨어적 측면의 영향력이 더 유의했으며, 법제도적인 측면에서는 집행의 투명성, 법제도의 효과가 유의하게 영향을 미치는 것을 밝혀냈다.
