Analytical optimization for PCDD/Fs and DL-PCBs in consumer products

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (DL-PCBs) are well-known hazardous pollutants, which can occur from manufacturing processes (e.g., pulp digestion and bleaching) and reaction by chemically or structurally similar chemicals used for disinfectant and preservative. Since the human skin can be exposed to various pollutants through the dermal contacts of pulp products and household chemicals, 17 PCDD/Fs and 12 DL-PCBs in the commercial products were investigated in this study. Soild samples were extracted using Soxhlet apparatuses for 24 h with dichloromethane, and liquid-liquid extraction with dichloromethane was conducted for liquid samples. After substituting the solvent with n-hexane, the extracts were cleaned up on multi-layer silica gel columns and alumina columns. For additional extraction or clean-up methods, dimethyl sulfoxide/n-hexane partitioning, sulfuric acid treatment, and florisil column were applied. A gas chromatograph (GC) coupled with a high-resolution mass spectrometer (HRMS) was used for PCDD/F and DL-PCB analysis. Most of the PCDD/F congeners were detected lower than 10% for all samples, whereas Octachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (OCDD) was detected about 30%. The detection rates of DL-PCBs were relatively high, and tetra- and penta-CBs (#77, #123, #118, and #105) were mainly detected among the target congeners. The concentrations of PCDD/Fs and DL-PCBs in each product group were determined accurately through this study.
