<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome is a tick-borne infectious disease. The present study investigated the prevalence of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV) in shelter dogs and cats in the Republic of Korea (ROK). Blood samples were collected from 426 dogs and 215 cats in animal shelters throughout the ROK in 2016. Of the tested samples, one (0.2%) dog and one (0.5%) cat were positive for SFTSV. Phylogenetic analysis of the sequences obtained in the present study showed that the viruses belonged to the J3 clade, which is considered the dominant clade in the ROK. This study reports the first molecular detection of SFTSV in shelter dogs and cats in the ROK.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The purpose of this study was to investigate the seroprevalence of antibodies against severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV) in shelter dogs in the Republic of Korea (ROK) using an indirect immunofluorescence assay and virus neutralization test. Sera were collected from 426 dogs in 12 animal shelters throughout the ROK from March 2016 to November 2016. Overall, 59 of 426 (13.9%) samples were seropositive for antibodies against SFTSV. A significant difference was observed in accordance with the sampling region (<I>p</I> <0.001), but not according to the sex (<I>p</I> =0.279) or breed (<I>p</I> =0.729) of the dogs. The seroprevalence of SFTSV showed an inversely proportional trend to the latitude of the sampling regions: the highest rate was observed in the southern region followed by the Jeju-do region. This is the first report on the nationwide prevalence of antibodies against SFTSV in companion dogs in animal shelters throughout the ROK.</P>
Prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility of Salmonella isolated from Korean slaughter pigs

During the period of December 2000 to November 2001, a total of 419(10.9%) Salmonella was isolated from 3,850 slaughtered pig samples(2,732 lymph nodes and 1,118 caecal contents) in Korea. Three hundred and seventy(13.5%) and 49(4.4%) Salmonella were isolated from lymph nodes and caecal contents, respectively. In the isolation ratio of Salmonella spp originated from each class of season, summer(15.7%), autumn(11.5%), spring(10.0%) and winter(8.3%), in order. As the result of serotyping, B group(67.5%) were the most common, in order of C$_1$(14.6%), D$_1$(6.0%), C$_2$(4.1%) and E$_1$(3.3%). 32 serovars were found, the major serotypes were as follows; S typhimurium(21.7%), S schwarzengrund(16.0%), S derby(15.8%), S typhimurium variant copenhagen(9.8%), S enteritidis (6.0%) and S mbandaka(6.0%). All of the isolates were susceptible to norfloxacin and ofloxacin. The isolates were resistant in order of doxycycline(69.2%), tetracycline(68.7%), penicliin(54.9%) and streptomycin(52.5%).
Efficacy of Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection for Leukocytospermia

White blood cells (WBCs) are present in most human ejaculates, but abnormally high concentration of seminal leukocytes may reflect an underlying pathological condition. The World Health Organization (WHO) has defined leukocytospermia as status of more than 10? WBC/mL of semen. The purpose of this study was firstly, to compare the outcomes between conventional IVF and ICSI in leukocytospermia, and secondly, to investigate whether ICSI may be an alternation treatment for patients with leukocytospermia. Total 346 cycles of conventional IVF and ICSI candidates underwent IVF cycles at Eulji Hospital Infertility Clinic. Semen Parameters including concentration, motility, morphology of spermatozoa and concentration of leukocytes were assessed from the raw ejaculates. There was no difference in sperm concentration, motility and morphology. The rates of fertilization and good embryo development from ICSI were significantly higher than those from conventional IVF in leukocytospermia (60.4% & 32.5%, respectively for ICSI group and 44.4% & 28.5%, respectively for IVF group, P<0.001). The pregnancy rate after ICSI was also higher than that from conventional IVF (34.0% vs 29.1%, P<0.05). These results indicate that the presence of seminal leukocyes (>1×10? WBC/mL of semen) is adversely related with fertilization, embryo development and pregnancy rate. Therfore the measurement of seminal leukocytes in routine semen analysis appears to be of prognostic value with regard to male fertilizing potential. In conclusion, it is suggested that ICSI is an alternative choice of treatment for patients with leukocytospermia.

<P>Oligodendrocytes are myelin-forming cells in the central nervous system. Research into the effects of aging on oligodendrocyte protein expression remains limited. The present study aimed to determine the alterations in oligodendrocyte-specific protein (OSP) expression in the gerbil hippocampus at 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 24 months of age with western blot and immunohistochemistry analyses. OSP expression levels in the hippocampus were highest at 6 months of age. OSP immunoreactivity was identified in numerous cell bodies at 1 month, although the number of OSP immunoreactive cells was different according to hippocampal subregion. The number of OSP immunoreactive cells significantly decreased at 2 months and, thereafter, numbers decreased gradually. The detection of OSP immunoreactive fibers was negligible in all layers in the hippocampal subregions until 4 months. OSP immunoreactive fibers were abundant at 6 and 24 months, although the fiber distribution patterns in the CA1-3 areas and dentate gyrus were different. The results demonstrated that OSP expression in the gerbil hippocampus was age-dependent. The detection of OSP immunoreactive cell bodies and fibers was significantly different according to the layers of hippocampal subregions, indicating that myelination may be continuously altered in the hippocampus during normal aging.</P>

Foreign plants introduced by overseas exchanges are rapidly transformed into naturalized plants and pose serious threats to biodiversity, including domestic native species. Therefore, this study is based on the flora survey data of 776 map numbers(1200 places) for 12 years from 2006 to 2017, the third to fourth data of the National Natural Environment Survey, the nation’s largest basic research project on the natural ecosystem. By analyzing plant species and naturalized plant species and predicting naturalized plant species and naturalization Index, they can be used as basic data to study environmental changes, or they can be used to set various indicators applying naturalized plants and naturalization Index and to set the upper limit of permit for development activi-ties. Therefore, in this study, one-way ANOVA analysis and MANOVA analysis were conducted to determine whether there is a difference in naturalized plant species and naturalization Index by year, region, altitude, pop-ulation density, GDP, and the ratio of forest to area. There was a correlation between the items such as year, region, altitude, population density, GDP, the ratio of forest to area and the number and naturalization Index of naturalized plants, and the greatest impact on the naturalized plant species and naturalization Index. Curve es-timation regression, multiple regression, and dummy variable regression were performed to find out which items are causing the problem. Through this research, it is thought that the naturalization Index predicted by this study can be used for the issue of Permit on Exclusive use of inter-mountain area altitude standard, which is operated under the Act on Planning, and Use of National Territory, and the Mountain Site Management Act. The natural-ization Index predicted by this study can be used as basic data for setting the upper limit of Permit on Exclusive use of inter-mountain area, or for studying environmental change, or for setting various indicators.
