        Sb-Al<i> x </i>C<i> y </i>-C Nanocomposite Alloy Anodes for Lithium-Ion Batteries

        Hung, Nguyen Thanh,Park, Sung-Hoon,Bae, Joonwon,Yoon, Young Soo,Kim, Ji Hyeon,Son, Hyung Bin,Lee, Daeho,Kim, Il Tae,Hur, Jaehyun Pergamon Press 2016 Electrochimica Acta Vol. No.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We present a facile approach to making Al-Sb, carbon-modified (Al-Sb-C) nanocomposites for use as new anode materials in lithium-ion batteries (LIB). Alloying is achieved by one step synthesis using high energy mechanical milling (HEMM), producing nanometer-sized alloy particles of Sb-Al<I> x </I>C<I> y </I>-C. Based on electrochemical analyses, we determined that Sb acts as an active material, and both Al and carbon create a hybrid buffering matrix that mitigates the volume expansion of the active material during lithiation/delithiation to a greater degree than that by a pure metallic matrix (AlSb). In addition, we optimized the stoichiometric ratio of Al and Sb with regard to specific capacity and cycling performance. Of the ratios tested, a 1:1 molar ratio of Al and Sb exhibited the best cycling performance (302.5mAhg−1 after 200 charge/discharge cycles). Although our Al-Sb-C composite had low initial coulombic efficiency (∼59%), recovery to∼97% occurred within three cycles, indicating that initial side reactions are quickly reduced over the course of cycling. AlSb-C anodes also showed good rate capability and volumetric capacity. Overall, the new AlSb-C composite is a promising candidate for use as negative electrodes in lithium-ion batteries, providing an alternative to commercially available graphite electrodes.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> We fabricated Sb-AlxCy-C nanocomposite alloy anodes by high-energy mechanical milling for use in lithium-ion batteries. </LI> <LI> The electrochemical performances, morphologies, and crystallographic features of AlSb and AlSbC with three different mixing ratios of Al and Sb were investigated. </LI> <LI> We found that AlSb(1:1)-C showed the best electrochemical performances in terms of specific capacity, cyclic performances, and rate capabilities. </LI> <LI> The mechanism of formation of AlSbC was examined by using XRD, TEM, and DCP data. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>We fabricated the high performances of Sb-AlxCy-C nanocomposite alloy anodes using high-energy mechanical milling for use in lithium-ion batteries.</P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

Financial Development, Income Inequality and the Role of Democracy: Evidence from Vietnam

Hung Thanh NGUYEN 한국유통과학회 2021 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.8 No.11

The objective of this study is to see how a country’s level of democracy impacts the relationship between financial development and income disparity. We argue that political regimes, supported by their degree of democracy, are important for various decentralization theories to predict the impact of financial development on income inequality. Our study tests this argument using Vietnam time series data for the period 2000–2020 through the ARDL model. The financial development variable is represented by five proxies, the income inequality variable is represented by the GINI coefficient and the role of democracy is represented by the Freedom House Index. Data serving for the study is taken from data sources with high reliability. The results of the study have strong evidence that (1) financial development has a positive impact on income inequality, (2) democratic government will reduce national income inequality. (3) And a higher degree of democracy tends to mitigate the positive impact of financial development on income inequality. Thus, our study contributes to the literature by providing a new look at the mixed results regarding the relationship between financial development and theoretical income inequality. Finally, the article provides policy implications for the Government of Vietnam.

Factors Affecting Efficiency of Electronic Customs and Firm Performance in Vietnam

NGUYEN, Hang Thanh,GRANT, David Bruce,BOVIS, Christopher,NGUYEN, Thuy Thi Le,MAC, Yen Thi Hai Korea Distribution Science Association 2021 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.8 No.2

The paper identifies the enablers (drivers) and inhibitors (barriers) influencing e-customs implementation in Vietnam (known as a developing country with a lower technological environment) along with determining the impact of e-customs on firm performance. The survey was conducted with the representatives (managers) of firms in five cities and provinces dominating Vietnam's international trade. The data was analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM). The findings show two significant drivers (enablers) - relative advantages and national culture, while compatibility and ease of use are the barriers. Previous studies showed that cultural dimensions related to 'uncertainty acceptance' and 'individualism' encourage innovation; however, this paper demonstrates that 'uncertainty avoidance' and 'collectivism' promote e-customs deployment in Vietnam. Previously, Vietnamese culture was known for scoring high on cultural dimensions related to 'power distance' and 'short-term orientation'. However, today, as an emerging country, Vietnamese has switched to 'low distance' and 'long-term orientation', especially in terms of e-customs innovation. Additionally, the paper also emphasized that e-customs implementation had a positive influence on firm performance in Vietnam. Based on the results of the paper, policy-makers can devise essential solutions to enhance e-customs implementation as well as managers of firms can set-up strategies to adapt to the modernized environment.

Social Responsibility, Organizational Commitment, and Organizational Performance: Food Processing Enterprises in the Mekong River Delta

NGUYEN, Thanh Hung,TU, Van Binh Korea Distribution Science Association 2020 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.7 No.2

This study aims to measure the relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and affective commitment (ACO), normative commitment (NCO), and organizational performance in food processing enterprises (FPEs) in the Mekong River Delta, Vietnam. To test the initial model proposed in this paper, a total of 422 owners, directors and managers of FPEs were interviewed from some provinces in the Mekong River Delta. The method of exploratory factor analysis (EFA) is initially employed, then confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structure equation modelling (SEM) are used. The results of SEM showed that higher affective commitment was correlated with normative commitment. The results showed that four aspects of CSR toward employees, customers, environment and legal are significant factors. As a result, ACO and NCO act as mediators between CSR and organizational performance. This finding provides strong evidence of the important role of CSR to support positive impacts on ACO, NCO, and orgazational performance (OP). In addition, the success of the organizational performance is also found by contributions of CSR and NCO to its changes. Although ACO does not directly affect performance, it has a positive effect on the NCO. Therefore, it is necessary to enhance the implementation of CSR to promote implementation of organizational commitments.

Impact of Leader-Member Relationship Quality on Job Satisfaction, Innovation and Operational Performance: A Case in Vietnam

NGUYEN, Thanh Hung Korea Distribution Science Association 2020 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.7 No.6

This study examines the relation between the quality of leader-member relationship and operational performance of processing enterprises employees in Vietnam, while job satisfaction and innovation are as a mediator variable. In depth interviews are first conducted with five managers and professional workers in five processing enterprises to determine the latent variables and build the structured questionnaire with observed variables. A quantitative survey with 438 employees and managers from 300 processing enterprises was carried out. The method of exploratory factor analysis (EFA), Cronbach's alpha analysis, and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to test the reliability, the convergent nature, and the consistency of the concepts. Structural equation modeling (SEM) is used to test the proposed model. The result shows that job satisfaction, innovation and operational performance have positive effects on the quality of leader-member relationship. The relationship between leaders and members had indirect impact on employee's operational performance via their job satisfaction and innovation, which illustrates a mediator role of job satisfaction and innovation for employees' performance. The findings of this study suggest that managers need to focus on developing relationship with employees to improve their satisfaction, innovation and performance.

The Impact of International Integration on the Inequality of Income between Rural and Urban Areas in Vietnam

NGUYEN, Thi Thanh Huyen,NGUYEN, Thi Thu Hien,NGUYEN, Thi Le Hang,NGUYEN, Van Cong Korea Distribution Science Association 2020 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.7 No.3

The study examines the impact of international integration on Vietnam's rural and urban income inequalities using the regression model. The data used for this study is based on the results of the Vietnam Household Living Standards survey from 2008 to 2016 of the General Statistics Office. These surveys conducted nationwide with a sample size of 46,995 households in 3,133 communes/wards which were representative at national, regional, urban, rural and provincial levels. The level of international economic integration used in the study is the proportion of import and export turnover of GDP, the proportion of FDI and GDP by province. Due to the heterogeneity and unobservableness of the single observant in the data set, we selected the models of random and fixed effects. The research results show that during the economic integration process, the Export/GDP factor is negatively related to income inequality. The remaining factors (GDP per capita, FDI/GDP, Educational level of households, Percentage of internet users, Aggregation of foreign cash inflow and GDP of the province) are all positively related to income inequality. The findings help assess the impact of international integration on rural-urban income inequality, but also provides a concrete basis to help policymakers address income inequality in the integration process.

Determinants of Share Prices of Listed Companies Operating in the Steel Industry: An Empirical Case from Vietnam

NGUYEN, Phu Ha,NGUYEN, Phi-Hung,TSAI, Jung-Fa,NGUYEN, Thanh Tam,HO, Van Nguyen,DAO, Trong-Khoi Korea Distribution Science Association 2020 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.7 No.12

In accordance with huge demand for capital to meet the expansion of steel production, there are more and more steel companies who have officially listed their stocks in HOSE and HNX. One of the key issues in successful initial public offerings and seasonal offerings for these companies is how to make stocks of steel companies become more attractive in the eyes of investors. The purpose of this research is to analyze the determinants of share prices of listed steel companies in Vietnam. This study utilized macro-economic variables, ratios and indicators representing characteristics of steel industry collected from Quarter 1/2006 to Quarter 4/2019 in association with the panel data and the feasible generalized least square (FGLS) model to evaluate the degree of these factors on the share prices. The results of the research show that ROE, Cons_rate, and CO2_rate are three main factors affecting the share prices of listed steel companies. Among which, ROE and Cons_rate have a positive effect, while CO2_rate has a negative effect on the share prices of listed steel companies. It also confirms the relationship between the environmental factor, construction industry factor and the stock prices. This lays foundations for recommendations for the future policies towards environmental protection and sustainable development.
