<P>Mo doped Li excess transition metal oxides formulated as 0.3Li[Li0.33Mn0.67]O2·0.7Li[Ni0.5-<I>x</I>Co0.2Mn0.3-<I>x</I>Mo2<I>x</I>]O2 were synthesized using the co-precipitation process. The effects of the substitution of Ni and Mn with Mo were investigated for the density of the states, the structure, cycling stability, rate performance and thermal stability by tools such as first principle calculations, synchrotron X-ray diffraction, field-emission SEM, solid state 7Li MAS nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), elemental mapping by scanning TEM (STEM), inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) and a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). It was confirmed that high valence Mo6+ doping of the Li-excess manganese-nickel-cobalt layered oxide in the transition metal enhanced the structural stability and electrochemical performance. This increase was due to strong Mo–O hybridization inducing weak Ni–O hybridization, which may reduce O2 evolution, and metallic behavior resulting in a diminishing cell resistance.</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>Mo doped Li excess transition metal oxides formulated as 0.3Li[Li0.33Mn0.67]O2·0.7Li[Ni0.5-xCo0.2Mn0.3-xMo2x]O2 were synthesized using the co-precipitation process. <IMG SRC='http://pubs.rsc.org/services/images/RSCpubs.ePlatform.Service.FreeContent.ImageService.svc/ImageService/image/GA?id=c2dt11833e'> </P>

A 14.2 mW 2.55-to-3 GHz Cascaded PLL With Reference Injection and 800 MHz Delta-Sigma Modulator in 0.13 <tex> $\mu$</tex>m CMOS

        Dongmin Park,SeongHwan Cho IEEE 2012 IEEE journal of solid-state circuits Vol.47 No.12

<P>In this paper, a low-noise cascaded PLL is proposed where an integer-N digital bang-bang PLL is used to multiply a 50 MHz reference to an 800 MHz clock that is fed to a ΔΣ fractional-N PLL to generate 2.55-to-3 GHz output. In order to minimize the jitter of the 800 MHz clock, a reference injection scheme using dual-pulse ring oscillator is employed. Quantization noise from the delta-sigma modulator is suppressed without any noise cancellation techniques owing to the high operating frequency of the fractional-N PLL. Prototype implemented in 0.13 μm CMOS process achieves the worst-case RMS jitter of 356 fs<I>rms</I> over 100 Hz to 40 MHz integration bandwidth, while consuming 14.2 mW from a 1.2 V supply. The worst-case fractional spur measured over 7 different chips is -53.9 dBc and the reference spur is -84 dBc.</P>

Korean Red Ginseng (Panax ginseng) Potentiates the Inhibitory Actions of Testosterone on Obesity and Adipogenesis in High Fat Diet-Fed Castrated Mice

Dongmin Park,Michung Yoon 대한의생명과학회 2017 Biomedical Science Letters Vol.23 No.3

It has been suggested that ginseng is beneficial for ameliorating the aging males" symptoms, such as weight gain, fatigue, erectile dysfunction, and depression, in elderly men with testosterone deficiency. We thus investigated the effects of Korean red ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer; Araliaceae) on obesity in a mouse model of testosterone deficiency (castrated C57BL/6J mice). The effects of ginseng extract (GE) and/or testosterone on obesity and adipogenesis in high-fat diet (HFD)-fed castrated C57BL/6J mice and 3T3-L1 adipocytes were examined using in vivo and in vitro approaches. After feeding mice a HFD for 8 weeks, we found that mice also receiving GE and/or testosterone showed decreased body weight, adipose tissue mass, adipocyte size, and hepatic lipid accumulation compared with untreated HFD-fed mice. Expression of adipogenic genes (PPARγ, C/EBPα, and aP2) was decreased by GE and/or testosterone in adipose tissues. Consistent with the in vivo data, lipid accumulation and the mRNA expression of adipogenesis genes in 3T3-L1 adipocytes were decreased by GE, ginsenosides, and testosterone. The inhibitory effects of GE (or ginsenosides) were comparable to those of testosterone, and the effects of co-treatment with GE (or ginsenosides) and testosterone were greater than those of testosterone alone in vivo and in vitro. Our results indicate that ginseng may be able to potentiate the inhibitory effects of testosterone on obesity and adipogenesis in HFD-fed castrated mice, providing possible therapeutic implications in men with testosterone deficiency.

      • Inactivation of the PtdIns(4)P phosphatase Sac1 at the Golgi by H2O2 produced via Ca2+-dependent Duox in EGF-stimulated cells

        Park, Sujin,Lim, Jung Mi,Park, Seon Hwa,Kim, Suree,Heo, Sukyeong,Balla, Tamas,Jeong, Woojin,Rhee, Sue Goo,Kang, Dongmin Elsevier 2019 FREE RADICAL BIOLOGY AND MEDICINE Vol.131 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Binding of epidermal growth factor (EGF) to its cell surface receptor induces production of H2O2, which serves as an intracellular messenger. We have shown that exogenous H2O2 reversibly inactivates the phosphatidylinositol 4-phosphate [PtdIns(4)P] phosphatase Sac1 (suppressor of actin 1) at the Golgi complex of mammalian cells by oxidizing its catalytic cysteine residue and thereby increases both the amount of Golgi PtdIns(4)P and the rate of protein secretion. Here we investigated the effects of EGF on Sac1 oxidation and PtdIns(4)P abundance at the Golgi in A431 cells. EGF induced a transient increase in Golgi PtdIns(4)P as well as a transient oxidation of Sac1 in a manner dependent on elevation of the intracellular Ca2+ concentration and on H2O2. Oxidation of Sac1 occurred at the Golgi, as revealed with the use of the Golgi-confined Sac1-K2A mutant. Knockdown of Duox enzymes implicated these Ca2+-dependent members of the NADPH oxidase family as the major source of H2O2 for Sac1 oxidation. Expression of a Golgi-targeted H2O2 probe revealed transient EGF-induced H2O2 production at this organelle. Our findings have thus uncovered a previously unrecognized EGF signaling pathway that links intracellular Ca2+ mobilization to events at the Golgi including Duox activation, H2O2 production, Sac1 oxidation, and PtdIns(4)P accumulation.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> EGF elicits transient H2O2 production at the Golgi by Ca2+-dependent Duox. </LI> <LI> This H2O2 inactivates Sac1 at the Golgi by transiently oxidizing its catalytic Cys. </LI> <LI> Transient inactivation of Sac1 results in a transient increase in Golgi PtdIns(4)P. </LI> <LI> This new EGF signaling pathway links Ca2+ to Golgi PtdIns(4)P via Duox-H2O2-Sac1. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

      • Design Techniques for a Low-Voltage VCO With Wide Tuning Range and Low Sensitivity to Environmental Variations

Dongmin Park,SeongHwan Cho IEEE 2009 IEEE transactions on microwave theory and techniqu Vol.57 No.4

<P>This paper presents design techniques for a low-voltage voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) with a wide tuning range and low sensitivity to process, voltage, and temperature (PVT) variations. For wide tuning range, a switched tuning scheme is employed coupled with voltage-boosting techniques in a manner that improves the quality factor and tuning range of a switched capacitor array. To minimize the design overhead required for a robust VCO, an adaptive body-biasing technique is proposed, which relaxes the startup constraint and increases the VCO's immunity to PVT variations. The proposed VCO is implemented in 0.18-mum CMOS technology and operates at 2.4 GHz. It achieves phase noise of - 117 dBc/Hz at 1-MHz offset and a tuning range 20% while consuming 365 muW of power. The figure-of-merit with the tuning range is -197 dBc/Hz, which is the lowest among recent state-of-the-art low-voltage VCOs.</P>

Lee Hyeong served two North Korean dictators as a high-ranking state architect, working for over four decades since the end of the Korean War. By examining Lee’s architectural projects and writings, this study analyzes the relationship between an architect and his dictatorial clients. Using his technical skills, Lee faithfully assisted his leaders—Kim Il-Sung and Kim Jung-Il—by designing their monumental architecture and testifying their architectural genius, and as a result, Lee remained the top architect in North Korea for an exceptionally long period. In this process, Lee did not develop his own unique architectural style; rather, he acted as an architectural expert to realize the various forms of architecture that his leaders desired to build. At the onset of his career, Lee went to the Soviet Union and studied architecture. After his return, he built a great number of Stalinist classical buildings in war-torn Pyongyang. During the 1950s, as Kim Il-Sung consolidated his absolute power, Lee helped build functional buildings that were in line with national policies or, sometimes, buildings that promoted national pride. In the late 1970s, Kim Jong-Il emerged as the center of national power, and in the process, Lee participated in Kim Jong-Il’s key construction projects such as the Changgwang Street redevelopment. Toward the end of his career, Lee served the regime by testifying that Kim Jong-Ils construction projects in Pyongyang succeeded Kim Il-Sungs postwar accomplishments. The understanding of Lee Hyeong’s varying roles as a state architect in a dictatorship will cast new light on the symbiotic relationship that North Korean elite architects had with their autocratic leaders.

Construction of the Pyongyang Railroad Station began in 1907 as an important foothold for the Japanese colonization of the Korean Peninsula and the further invasion of Manchuria. As Pyongyang gradually grew in size and political significance, the Pyongyang Station came to have two responsibilities: Fulfill its functional role and serve as a monument to the growing dignity of the city. This study argues that the Pyongyang Station, newly rebuilt in 1958, was the first building to solve the demands for both functional expansion and the pursuit of monumentality. Stylistically, the original single-story wooden building became a three-story classical masonry building. The stylistic change symbolizes the political shift by which the building was reconstructed. The simple wooden building built by the Japanese, representing Pyongyang"s status as a colonial provincial town, was transformed into an imposing gateway for the capital city of a newly born socialist state. Socialist Realism, correctly described by its slogan "socialist in content and national in form," harmoniously blended classical architecture, socialist symbols, and Korean local motifs. This study is significant in that it illustrates the historical changes and continuity of the Pyongyang Station from 1907, when it was first built, through the "liberated space" to the postwar reconstruction period of the 1950s.

Wonsan has been in the spotlight of the global media during the Kim Jong Un era for its military and economic importance. Despite the growing interest in the city, little is known about how Wonsan was rebuilt from almost complete destruction after the Korean War. This study examines how Wonsan’s reconstruction plan changed from 1953 through 1963 and analyzes the reasons for the changes. This paper argues that, influenced heavily by Soviet urban planning, the early city plan of Wonsan was ideal in form and ambitious in scale. However, since full-scale reconstruction began in 1958, Wonsan’s city boundaries have shrunk and become almost the same as the old city limits that were in place during the Japanese colonial period. In addition, as the reconstruction progressed, the plan transformed to emphasize the city’s geographic characteristics and its identity as a coastal tourist city. The resulting asymmetric and dynamic composition remains an important compositional principle in Wonsan’s urban planning to this day. Unlike the splendid reconstruction of Pyongyang, where human and material resources were concentrated, Wonsan’s rebuilding was the result of a trade-off between ambitious ideals and limited resources. Using Wonsan as a case study, this paper seeks to reveal the difficulties and compromises encountered in the reconstruction of North Korean provincial cities that have been long obscured by the exemplary rebuilding of Pyongyang.
