We have analyzed H and $K_s$-band images of the Arches cluster obtained using the NIRC2 instrument on Keck with the laser guide star adaptive optics (LGS AO) system. With the help of the LGS AO system, we were able to obtain the deepest ever photometry for this cluster and its neighborhood, and derive the background-subtracted present-day mass function (PDMF) down to $1.3M_{\bigodot}$ for the 5"-9" annulus of the cluster. We find that the previously reported turnover at $6M_{\bigodot}$ is simply due to a local bump in the mass function (MF), and that the MF continues to increase down to our 50 % completeness limit ($1.3M_{\bigodot}$) with a power-law exponent of ${\Gamma}$ = -0.91 for the mass range of 1.3 < M/$M_{\bigodot}$ < 50. Our numerical calculations for the evolution of the Arches cluster show that the ${\Gamma}$ values for our annulus increase by 0.1-0.2 during the lifetime of the cluster, and thus suggest that the Arches cluster initially had ${\Gamma}$ of $-1.0{\sim}-1.1$, which is only slightly shallower than the Salpeter value.
Nocturnal Urine Production in Women With Global Polyuria

Purpose: Low nocturnal urine production (NUP) may be sufficient to rule out global polyuria (GP) in men. This study determines the sensitivity of indices for nocturnal polyuria (NP), defined as nocturnal polyuria index (NPi; nocturnal urine volume/24-hour urine volume) ≥0.33 or NUP ≥90 mL/hr, for detecting GP in women. Methods: Data were analyzed from 2 prospective protocols involving subjects recruited from a urology ambulatory care unit and a continence clinic. Women ≥18 years with nocturia were included if they met either of 2 common criteria for GP: (1) ≥40 mL/kg/24 hr or (2) ≥3,000 mL/24 hr. Results: Thirty-one women were included (NPi, 28.6 [21.3–40.7]; NUP, 100.8 [68.3–135.8] mL/hr). At the ≥40 mL/kg/24-hr cutoff, 40% and 63% of women reporting ≥1 nocturnal void(s) (n=30) had NPi ≥0.33 and NUP ≥90 mL/hr, respectively. Additionally, 53% and 71% of subjects reporting ≥2 nocturnal voids (n=17) had NPi ≥0.33 and NUP ≥90 mL/hr, respectively. At the ≥3,000 mL/24-hr cutoff, 38% and 69% of women reporting ≥1 nocturnal void(s) (n=13) had NPi ≥0.33 and NUP ≥90 mL/hr, respectively, and 63% and 88% of subjects reporting ≥2 nocturnal voids (n=8) had NPi ≥0.33 and NUP ≥90 mL/hr, respectively. By extension, 37%–62% of women with nocturia and GP did not have NP by NPi ≥0.33 criteria, and 12%–37% did not have NP by NUP ≥90 mL/hr criteria. Conclusions: Indices of excess nighttime urination do not reliably predict GP in women. A full-length voiding diary may be particularly important in the evaluation of women with nocturia. Nocturia in women merits further consideration as a distinct entity.

미국의 청각장애 교육은 청력손실에 대한 조기판별 및 중재, 인공 와우 이식의 효과, 농 전문가들의 역할, 교육적 배치, 청각장애 학교 학령기 아동의 특성 변화, 교육방법, 교육과정, 미국 연방법의 영향과 같은 다양한 영역에서 급변하고 있다. 또한 이러한 요소들은 서로 상호작용한다. 그 중 일부 요소들을 아래에서 중점적으로 강조할 것이며, 보다 심층적인 미국 교육의 현실을 살펴볼 것이다. 그에 앞서, 간단하게 일반적인 미국 청각장애 교육과 연방 및 주 정부의 교육관련 사항들을 개략적으로 설명하겠다.

Canister sampling for the determination of atmospheric mixing ratios of nonmethane hydrocarbons (NMHC_(S)), selected halocarbons, and methyl nitrate was conducted aboard the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) C-130 aircraft over the Pacific and Southern Oceans as part of the First Aerosol Characterization Experiment (ACE 1) during November and December 1995. A latitudinal profile, flown from 76˚N to 60˚S, revealed latitudinal gradients for most trace gases NMHC and halocarbon gases with predominantly anthropogenic sources, including ethane, erhyne, and tetrachloroethene, exhibited significantly higher mixing ratios in the northern hemisphere at all altitudes. Methyl chloride exhibited its lowest mixing ratios at the highest northern hemisphere latitudes, and the distributions of methyl nitrate and methyl iodide were consistent with tropical and subtropical oceanic sources. Layers containing continental air characteristic of aged biomass burning emissions were observed above about 3km over the remote southern Pacific and near New Zealand between approximately 19˚S and 43˚S. These plumes originated from the west, possibly from fires in southern Africa. The month-Ion, intensive investigation of the clean marine southern midlatitude troposphere south of Australia revealed decreases in the mixing ratios of ethane, ethyne, propane, and tetrachloroethene, consistent with their seasonal mixing ratio cycle. By contrast, increases in the average marine boundary layer concentrations cf methyl iodide, methyl nitrate, and dimethyl sulfide (DMS) were observed as the season progressed to summer conditions. These increases were most appreciable i n the region south of 44˚S over Southern Ocean waters characterized as subantaretic and polar, indicating a seasonal increase in oceanic productivity for these gases.

보통미래를 예측하는 사람들은 현재의 사회학, 지정학 그리고 과학기술과 같은 실체들의 정황과 과거의 성과들을 심사숙고 하여 평가함으로써 미래를 예측한다. 이러한 정황증거에 기인하기에 일들의 미래에 대한 예측은 독창성이나 대담성도 요구되지 않고, 실질적으로 상상력이 풍부한 것도 아니며, 분명한 현실의 범주에서 벗어나는 확신할 수 있는 가능성을 많이 가지고 있는 것도 아니다. 그러므로 나는 수의학의 미래에 대한 특별한 청사진을 제시하려 하는 것은 아니다. 다만, 나는 다음 세기에 접근하고 있는 이때에 연구, 교육, 그리고 전문적 직업 서비스 분야에의 수의직능에 적용 가능한 몇 가지 과제와 기회에 관하여 기술하고자 한다.
THE EQUIVALENCE OF COMPACTNESS AND PSEUDO-COMPACTNESS IN SOME FUNCTION SPACES

This paper investigates the relationship between compactness and pseudo-compactness in subsets of C(X) where X is locally compact and first countable. Two primary theorems are proven. First, equicontinuity at a point is proven to be equivalent to the existence of a certain open cover of a pseudo-compact subset of C(X). The second theorem proves the equivalence of compactness and pseudo-compctness for closed subsets F of C(X).
