Although the literacy has been recently emphasized in many areas, it is known rarely that the relationship between the literacy and the word recognition process. To find the relationship, the present study conducted an exploratory study to investigate whether a correlation between the literacy and the lexical access in a process of word recognition existed, and an experiment to specify the relation among two variables. This study found that a relevance between the literacy and lexical decision latencies and accuracy rates reflecting the effectiveness of lexical access through the exploratory study. The experimental study used the lexical decision task that ask participants to press “word” or “nonword” button when they showed strings on the monitor as correctly and rapidly as they can. Four hundred words were selected from Korean newspapers DB and dialog DB randomly and used stimuli in the lexical decision task. The current study used verified questionary for the literacy. The results show that upper score group in the literacy score elicit faster lexical decision latency and higher accuracy than lower score group. Based on the result, the present study explained which processes of the lexical access were more efficient in the upper group as compared to the lower group. 최근 문해력이 다방면에 걸쳐 강조되고 있으나 문해력의 기초인 단어 재인과 문해력 간 관련성에 대해 알려진 바가 거의 없다. 이에 본 연구는 탐색적 연구에서 문해력과 단어 재인의 한 과정인 어휘 접속이 어떤 관련성이 있는지 살펴보고 실험 연구를 통해 두 변인의 관련성을 구체화하였다. 어휘 접속을 대표하는 실험 방법으로 어휘 판단 과제를 선택하였다. 이 과제는 단어 또는 비단어를 제시하고 단어인 경우 ‘단어’ 버튼을 비단어인 경우 ‘비단어’ 버튼을 가급적이면 빠르고 정확하게 반응하는 과제이다. 따라서 자극에 대한 반응이 나타날 때까지의 시간이 어휘판단 시간과 정답률은 어휘 접속의 효율을 반영한다. 탐색적 연구를 통해 문해력과 어휘 접속의 효율을 대표하는 어휘 판단 시간 및 정확도 간의 관련성을 찾을 수 있었고 두 변인의 직접적 관련성을 찾기 위해 실험 연구를 시행하였다. 실험 연구의 과제는 단일 단어를 모니터에 제시하고 제한 시간 내에 제시된 글자열이 단어이면 ‘단어’ 버튼을 단어가 아니면 ‘비단어’ 버튼을 빠르고 정확히 누르는 어휘 판단 과제였다. 사용한 자극은 국립국어원의 신문과 구어체 말뭉치에서 무작위로 2~3음절 단어 400개를 선정하였으며, 문해력을 측정하기 위해 공인된 문해력 질문지를 사용하였다. 실험 결과 문해력 상위 점수 집단이 하위 집단에 비해 더 빠른 어휘 판단 시간과 더 높은 정확도를 보였다. 이에 어휘 접속의 어떤 처리 과정이 상위 집단에서 더 효율적이었는지를 논의에서 설명하였다.
