IIHS Small overlap 충돌시험 시 승객거동해석에 관한 연구

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) research, the main factor of the occupants’ fatalities in these days is a small overlap crash at frontal crash area. So they recently released new small overlap crash test (25% of a car"s front end on the driver side strikes a 5-foot-tall rigid barrier at 40 mph) protocol. During the crash event, the tested vehicle moves to sideways away from the barrier and the amount of foot well intrusion should be increased more than existing offset test. This can be critical factor for the Dummy injury. In this study, the purpose is to predict injury for small overlap frontal crash test.

In IIHS side impact test, Injury measures obtained from instrumented 5th percentile female SID-IIs dummies placed in the driver. The 37 measures are grouped into three body regions: head and neck, torso, and pelvis and left leg. Three injury parameters are calculated for the head and neck, three parameters for each thoracic and abdominal rib in the torso, three parameters for the pelvis, and four parameters for the left leg. This study shows improvement of IIHS rating focused on leg injury. The simulation model is generated using MADYMO with PSM(Prescribed Structural Motion).
호주 신차안전도평가의 하부다리 상해치 개선을 위한 경차의 Footrest 형상 최적화

In order to protect occupant during car crash accident, Regulation and NCAP(New Car assessment Program) have been developed among various countries like U.S.A., Europe, Korea and Australia. Especially NCAP scores affect to sales of vehicles. So vehicle makers are trying to get good score in NCAP. Low leg injuries play an important role in Australia and Euro NCAP and these injuries are related with footrest design. Optimization of footrest design in early stage of vehicle development is necessary to obtain better and robust results of low legs during crash tests. In this paper, DFSS method and finite element model were used to optimize the low leg performance in small RHD vehicles. Compared with the lower leg injury of base model, the lower leg injury of proposed model was slightly improved and robustness was enhanced also.

In Euro-NCAP COP(Child Occupant Protection), it will be awarded zero points for head assessment in the dynamic test, if the child dummy head passed over the excursion limit line. Therefore it is important to control head excursion of the child dummy. Child dummy behavior can be controlled by Vehicle seat which is occupied by child restraint system(CRS) and CRS anchor. In this study, the effect of the vehicle seat type and CRS anchor mounting location were evaluated on Head excursion. Furthermore, it was found combination of parameters to minimize head excursion. This study is conducted based on CAE. The design engineer can expect which design of Vehicle seat and CRS anchor mounting would improve child occupants protection performance by this study.

The revision of New Car Assessment Program(NCAP) was published by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration(NHTSA) in July 2008. The one of change in frontal impact is the passenger dummy to Hybrid III 5%ile female dummy from Hybrid III 50%ile male dummy. NHTSA has decided to adopt AIS 3+ and AIS 2+ injury risk curves to assess the risk of injury to front seat occupants. Based on the criteria NHTSA test results showed that 5star performances are dropped to 3 or 4 star. In this study, we tried to find out the sensitive body region which will cause the high number of injury probability. Neck injury is the most sensitive value to drive the vehicle safety performance in the passenger. Passenger airbag size effect was investigated to improve the neck injury.

The final goal of this study is to predict the effects of airbag on occupant safety when the passenger is in OOP (Out-Of-Position) condition. To this end, accurate and efficient prediction of airbag deployment is essential. Control volume method and particle method were compared for airbag deployment simulation. The drop tower test was simulated with both methods by commercial code LS-DYNA and the results were compared with the test data. At the initial stages of inflation the particle method showed better agreement with the test data while the control volume method showed better agreement with the test data at the later stages. A rational choice would be to start with the particle method initially and then switch to the control volume method later for the rest of the process.

In these day, the importance of vehicle safety is more and more grown than past years. So that each of country made the RULE for evaluating the vehicle safety, we call it as NCAP (New Car Assessment Program). There was so many evaluation regions in NCAP safety evaluation, Lower Tibia index is important index in frontal crash test and it is closely related with the footrest design. Among the NCAP tests, ANCAP test was evaluated Australia vehicle with RHD and RHD vehicle has more severe package in Lower leg area. Therefore, on this paper we will consider the optimization design of footrest to reduce the lower Tibia injury at ANCAP offset frontal impact using the finite elements model and real crash test result.

Due to the advancement of analysis softwares and computer hardwares, crash simulation has been increasing during the development stage of cars. Recently, more accurate air-bag and dummy models has enabled the engineers to simulate more accurately. Moreover, the development of new dummies that imitate the physiology of children and women smaller than average female is gradually broadening the range of assessment. As for crash simulation, the MADYMO, an occupant safety simulation software with high-quality dummy models, and the LS-DYNA, an accurate and robust FE based simulation software, are widely employed in practice. In this study, the tendency of injuries obtained by front crash test for female passenger using LS-DYNA and MADYMO under the same conditions has been investigated.
