도서관은 도서를 비롯한 회화 및 기타 자료를 수집·정리·보관하여, 이용자의 요구에 따라 신속하고 효과적 이며 창조적으로 활용할 수 있도록 봉사하는 기관이다. 도서관의 주목적은 책을 대여하는데 있는데, 이러한 책을 대여 할 때, 청구기호를 사용해서 서적을 분류하는 방법을 사용하고 있다. 그러나 더욱 방대해지는 인쇄매체 사이에서 숫자에 의미가 없는 청구기호만을 가지고 책을 찾는 것은 숙달되지 않은 이용자에게 많은 혼란을 불러일으킨다. 본 연구는 도서관에서 책을 찾는 방법의 문제점을 보완하기 위해서 추가적인 방법과 새로운 방법을 제안하고 이를 통한 사용자의 수행을 검증하는 것을 그 목적으로 하였다. 첫 번째 대안은 청구기호에 의미를 부여하는 방법으로 도서관의 서가배치와 색 단서를 조합하여 특정한 책의 위치를 제시하는 것이었다. 실제 사용자 검증결과 사용자들은 기존의 방법에 비해 더 빠르고 정확하게 책을 찾을 수 있었다. 두 번째 방법은 검색단말기에서 책의 위치를 알려주는 도서관 지도를 직접 제시해 주는 것이었다. 마찬가지로 사용성 검증결과 사용자들은 기존 방법에 비해 더 높은 수행을 보였다. 이러한 두 가지 방법을 조합하여 정보를 제시한 다면 도서관 이용자들이 적은 노력으로 효율적으로 필요한 책을 찾을 수 있을 것이다. Libraries collect, organize, and archive books and other significant materials in order to support user"s requests regarding their collections. One traditional, primary function of library is rental service, and for rental service, libraries use "call number" in order to locate their collections. However, the typical call-number based system causes much confusion among users because it consists of meaningless characters and numbers which most users are not familiar with. In this research, we attempted to offer additional method of book search in the library and evaluate effectiveness of the suggested method. Our first suggestion is about providing meanings to the call number where book allocation and color cues are combined to indicate location of specific books. This method resulted in better performance both in time and error in book search. Our second suggestion is direct provision of library map which indicates the specific location of the book searched for at the computer terminal. This method also resulted in better performance in book search. Combination of the two above methods is expected to allow users to find books with less effort with greater efficiency.
