A Hydro-pneumatic Suspension Unit(HSU) is widely used these days in the tracked vehicles due to its desirable spring characteristics. Advanced version of the HSU, an In-arm type hydro-pneumatic Suspension Unit(ISU) is under development. An ISU has more load capacity with less volume and weight than a HSU. A tracked combat vehicle is driven mostly on the off-road, and semi-active ISU can show outstanding improvement in the comfort. But semi-active ISU has not been applied yet because its development has some problems, ultimately high-pressure condition and constrained space. In this paper, a semi-active ISU is developed for the 1 degree of freedom tracked vehicle, especially targeted to the battle tank. First a ISU body is designed to improve its endurance performance compared with HSU. A semi-active ISU is developed using an active damper that is able to change the orifice area continuously and a sky-hook controller that controls damping force with vertical velocity of the vehicle. Damping Characteristics of an active damper are examined by flow test and the performance of the semi-active ISU is verified through the dynaamic performance experiment for the I -degree of freedom vehicle.
