Kugyol is a linguistic mean for reading and interpreting texts written In Classical Chinese by inserting various grammatical elements such as verbal endings and case-markers, and so on. Kugyol can be sub-classified into pronunciation-based one and sense-based one: the former reads every kugyol character on the basis of the pronunciation of each chinese character and preserves the word order of original Chinese texts, whereas the latter reads some kugyol chrarcters on the basis of the sense of each chinese character and rearranges the word order according to ordering principles of Korean. In 2006, the dictionary of sense-based kugyol will be made, and the dictionary of pronunciation-based kugyol will be made in 2007. In 2006, some preliminary works for the dictionary of pronunciation-based kugyol will be preformed in parallel. For the compilation of these dictionaries, electronized corpus of relevant materials should be compiled, and tools for extracting examples from this corpus is needed. This tool has been developed for this project. In the case of sense-based kugyol, the electronic corpus had been compiled, but for the sake of convenience of selecting examples, we segmented each text into sentences of appropriate lengths. In the case of pronunciation-based dictionary, more and more materials are being electronized now. Some issues concerning the macro-structure of the dictionary of sense-based kugyol have been discussed. In case that various grammatical elements are concatenated, we should lemmatize this long kugyol as well as each sub-string. There are some disputes in relation to how to segment these complex kugyol strings. In addition, grammatical status and function of some kugyol elements are in dispute. In such cases, we will show more than one solution. The compilation of the Dcitionary of Kugyol will help study Ancient Korean, Buddhism in Korea Dynasty and Korea-Japan cultural interchanges in ancient times, etc.

A dictionary is one essence of the history, culture, belief, and industrial capabilities of a language used in a community. Instead of popping up from nowhere one day, dictionaries are the achievement of all linguistic studies being properly integrated, including phoneme, grammar, meaning, and many more. This is why a dictionary is usually called a synthetic art of linguistics. Despite such general understandings of dictionaries, only few sophisticated researches to examine the states of Korean dictionaries have been conducted in the past. This essay compares the definitions of four words, geulja(글자), munja(문자), geulssi(글씨), and ja(자), which appear in Korean dictionaries published from 1930s. These four words all relate to the English words “letter” and “character.” In general, it is witnessed, the semantic diversities of munja itself have been gradually weakened, while geulja, munja, and geulssi have increasingly diverged themselves from one another in their meanings. Also, early dictionaries share common denominators in geulja, munja, and geulssi, whereas late dictionaries tend to minimize their differences. Though revising Korean dictionaries may require considerable time and painstaking efforts, and though consequences might not be conspicious and satisfactory within a short amount of time, it will in the long run upgrade our cultural level tremendously. As much as macroscopic researches may do, microscophic approaches, like this one, will contribute to advancing Korean lexicography."

We examined how the terms concerning many writing systems were recorded in Korean language dictionaries. The errors aspects of the related terms can be summarized as follows. First, there are some headwords to be newly added. Moreover, some headwords need to be supplemented or modified. In case some headwords are synonyms, the default entry needs to be set and should be consistently used in the meaning explanation. The explanation of some headwords has errors. Moreover, the terms used in the explanation shall keep consistency. In addition, the format of relevant headwords should be unified. The terms concerning many writing systems are jargons which is directly related to language. So, much attention should be given in making a dictionary. Nevertheless, it is very regretful that there are not a few mistakes or errors. From now on, we need to have more interest in the writing system or the study of writing.
