회분식 공정은 공정의 대부분의 비정상상태로 운용되어지므로 중간저장조를 설치하면 공정의 불랑정한 요소를 완화시켜주고 공정의 이용도를 증가시키며, 공정의 조업에 유연성을 얻게 된다. 본 논문에서는 회분식 공정에서의 중간저장조 설계를 위하여, 여러 개의 회분장치가 평행하게 놓여 있는 공정구조를 대상으로 제품의 이상과 같은 공정이상 변수를 고려한 중간저장조 크기결정 모델을 제시하였다. 중간저장조의 크기 결정 모델은 상류공정에서 중간저장조로 유입되는 유량과 중간저장조에서 하류공정으로 유출되는 유량의 크기에 따라 두 가지 형태로 구하였다. 회분식 공정에서 여러 개의 장치가 평행하게 놓여 있을 경우 공정의 운용방법은 동상조업과 이상조업으로 대별될 수 있다. 이와 관련하여 상류공정이 다스의 평행한 장치로 구성되고 하류공정은 하나만 존재하는 MISO(Multiple Imput/Single Output) 구조에서 동상조업의 경우와 제품이상의 대칭적으로 일어나는 이상조업의 경우에 대한 중간조장조 크기결정 모델을 제시하고 분석적 해를 구하였다. 이를 확장하여 일반화된 MIMO(Multiple Imput/Single Output) 구조 및 Serial 구조에서의 중가저장조 크기결정 모델을 제시하였다.
