지방자치단체 캐릭터디자인의 모티브와 그래픽표현에 관한 연구

현재 우리나라의 지방자치단체(지자체)는 총 244개이다. 이중에서 1980년대 이후부터 현재까지 205개의 지자체가 캐릭터를 디자인하여 활용하고 있다. 본 연구는 205개 지자체 캐릭터 모티브의 그래픽 표현에 대한 연구로서 중복되는 것을 제외한 179개의 모티브를 대상으로 분석 하였다. 캐릭터 디자인의 모티브는 각지차체의 CI디자인의 차원에서 형상화한 것으로서 인물(58), 동물(44), 식물(14), 자연물(26), 가상물(32) 등 5가지 유형으로 분류된다. 이 중에는 각 지자체의 지리적 특성, 역사, 특산물, 문화유적, 설화 등을 모티브로 선정한 것도 있기때문에 중복되는 것도 있다. 모든 캐릭터의 모티브는 상투적인 의인화 표현 기법으로 디자인되었기 때문에 각 지자체의 동일성(identity)과 차별성의 측면에서 큰효과를 나타내지 못하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 지자체 캐릭터 디자인에서 모티브가 어떻게 시각적으로 표현되어 있는지에 대해 분석한결과 상투적이고 평면적인 그래픽 표현 기법으로 디자인 되어 21세기(현재) 모바일 커뮤니케이션 환경에 유연하게 활용될 수 없는 캐릭터 디자인이었다. 따라서 지자체 CI 디자인의 한 요소로서 캐릭터 디자인의 기본 방향은 캐릭터 디자인의 창의적인 아이덴티티 효과를 위한 새로운 그래픽 표현뿐 아니라 그래픽 표현에서 변용 가능한 그래픽 캐릭터가 개발되어야 할 것이다. Currently there are a total of 226 local governments. Since the 1980’s 205 local governments have been using its self character design. In this research out of the 205 local governments characters 179 were analyzed to learn what the motive was in making the characters and how the graphic was expressed, we had excluded the duplicated characters. Each characters of the local governments’ CI had been formed with 5 types, types were distinguished by personal figures(58), animals(44), natural objects(26), imaginary objects(32). There were some duplications as the local governments’ characters motive was expressed by its geographical specialty, history, regional products, cultural sites, myths and others. All of the characters’ motive was designed conventionally, due to this condition each local governments’ identity & differentiation did not show big effects. In this research it had analyzed how the local governments’ character design motive had been expressed visually, and learned that the local governments’ character had been designed flatly & conventionally, and learned that these characters could not be used flexibly in the 21st century(Current) mobile communication environment. The results shown through this study can be explained that the local governments’ CI design is an element in forming the characters and the basic design concept can be applied in motion graphics while applying it as the prerequisite expression.
