Poor fuel vaporization in gasoline engines causes the problem of HC emission during the cold start and warm-up period. This paper presents a strategy to improve fuel atomization during the warm-up phase. In this experiment, the heated fuel-rail system is constructed to investigate the effects of fuel heating on the average size of fuel droplets. The fuel atomization effects are examined by measuring Sauter Mean Diameter (SMD) of the fuel droplets from the three different types (two-hole, pintle, and six-hole) of injectors based upon a return less heated fuel-rail system. The results show that the six-hole type injector is the most sensitive to fuel heating in terms of SMD among three different types of injectors.

This study presents an self tuning regulator(STR) to improve the air-fuel ratio control performance of gasoline engine. The STR is designed based on the nonlinear dynamic engine model, and the performance of the STR is evaluated through the simulation and experiments. The STR shows better performance than a conventional PI controller in terms of the response time and disturbance rejection. Since the STR has less calculation load than the complex nonlinear controller, this algorithm can be easily applied to on-board engine controller.<br/>

This paper presents the process of the needle lift estimation of a common-rail injector for HSDl(High Speed Direct Injection) diesel engines. A nonlinear mathematical model of dynamic behaviors of common-rail injec-tor is established at first. Based on the mathematical model of the common-rail injector, the methodology of estimating the injector needle lift is introduced. A sliding mode observer is applied to overcome the model uncertainties. The common-rail injector model and the needle lift estimator are verified by simulations and experiments. The simulation and experimental results indicate that the model outputs are in a good agreement with experimental data, and the proposed nonlinear sliding observer can effectively estimate the needle lift.

This study presents the process of the continuous-time system identification for unknown nonlinear systems. The Radial Basis Function(RBF) error filtering identification model is introduced at first. This identification scheme includes RBF network to approximate unknown function of nonlinear system which is structured by affine form. The neural network is trained by the adaptive law based on Lyapunov synthesis method. The identification scheme is applied to engine and the performance of RBF error filtering identification model is verified by the simulation with a three-state engine model. The simulation results have revealed that the values of the estimated function show favorable agreement with the real values of the engine model. The introduced identification scheme can be effectively applied to model-based nonlinear control.<br/>

The torque is an important measure that represents the performance of a particular engine. Furthermore the information of engine torque can be used as a primary feedback parameter in modern engine management system. In this paper. a methodology is proposed for torque estimation of SI-engine, Since the proposed method uses cylinder pressure sensor, the torque can be estimated in a simple manner. The indicated torque is estimated from the peak pressure and its location, and the load torque is observed by the state observer based on the estimated indicated torque. The proposed method is accurate and robust against the variations that affect the torque production such as spark timing, mass air flow and others. This torque estimation method may be an alternative solution to the use of engine torque maps in a modern torque-based engine management system.

A novel concept of ICT based service, which is called N-device service, is proposed and implemented in the form of N-device smart education services. The N-device services are different from the existing N-screen services in terms of the number of devices a user is using for a specific service at the same time. A N-device service consists of several smart devices which are different in size, software and hardware platform, mobility, manufacturer and the like by fully utilizing the characteristic of each device. The major and unique features of N-device services are analyzed and depicted in a strict way. Those are shared role for each device, service by configurable device, one sensor multiple use, real-time data sharing, role shifting and new market creation. It is turned out that the N-device service is more human centric compared with existing ICT based services and can give richer digital experience to users because non-existent services become possible with the new concept. However, there exist several barriers to be implemented and commercialized in the real world. Those include high development cost and time, small market and different application platforms of devices. These barriers can be overcome by technical advances and cooperation between relevant parties. The smart education is very prominent area, in which the novel concept can be applied with high priority because Korean government announced its plan to boost up new educational services with big budget and these are acceptable by enthusiastic Korean parents and students. That’s why the N-device service is implemented in the education area, which is called as “livessam(live teacher),” with four smart devices, IPTV, tablet PC, PC and smart phone. By providing both detailed service scenario and techniques, we shows that the novel education service is technically feasible and acceptable by teachers and students

The common-rail fuel injection system is becoming a common technology for High Speed Direct Injection(HSDI)<br/> diesel engine. Since the performance of HSDI diesel engine is mainly determined by injection timing and rate, the<br/> precise control of the injection timing and rate is important. This study introduces a methodology for estimate of the<br/> injection timing and rate of a common-rail injector for HSDI diesel engine. A sliding mode observer is designed to<br/> overcome the model uncertainties, based on the nonlinear mathematical model of the common-rail injector. The<br/> injector model and the estimator are verified by relevant injector experiments in an injector test bench. The<br/> simulation and the experimental results indicate that the proposed sliding mode observer can effectively estimate the<br/> injection rate of the common-rail injector.

In the Advanced Driver Assistance System research field, the importance of the sensor fusion systems is rapidly focusing in recent years. With the increasing of the supplement of radar and camera sensors, the systems of ADAS such as LKAS, SCC and CDM are integrated and newly developed by adding brand new functions. Therefore, the sensor fusion system is almost a necessity for car industry. In this paper, the path from radar and lane information from camera is developed. The path-lane data fusion system is organized with three trajectories, the path only range, path-lane range and lane only range. Each range is designed to consider the driver physical time delay and lateral variation from extrapolated lane model. And the proposed system is verified by real vehicle experiments.

This study presents a methodology for estimating indicated torque and load torque. The proposed method which uses a cylinder pressure sensor has the advantage of simplicity, because it can eliminate the requirement of a complex indicated torque model and estimation algorithm for engine torque estimation. Futhermore, it is accurate and robust against the variations that affects the torque production such as spark timing, mass air flow and others. The indicated torque is estimated from the peak pressure and its location, and the load torque is observed by the state observer based on the estimated indicated torque. The proposed torque estimation method may be a feasible alternative to the use of engine torque maps in a modem torque-based engine management system and provide some ideas for many application areas such as engine diagnostics and traction control via engine torque control.
