Clothes and household linens play a important role in the spread of infectious diseases in the home and everyday life settings during normal daily activities. This study is to investigate major respiratory pathogens contamination in military basic trainee blankets and supplies for barrack hygiene improvement. Methods: We choose military basic training barracks and swabbed 20 chin straps of combat helmet, 5 face pieces of gas mask and 60 blankets during 5 weeks of basic military training course. The swab samples were tested for bacterial identification and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) for 10 bacterial pathogens and 9 viral pathogens. Results: 2 blankets had Staphylococcus. aureus (S. aureus), 2 combat helmets had S. aureus and Krebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae) respectively, 1 gas mask had S. aureus. There were no viral pathogen detection at all samples. Conclusions: This study indicates that military trainee's blanket, combat helmet and gas mask might be contaminated with respiratory bacterial pathogens might be originated from normal flora. It was suggested that regular hygiene intervention for military blanket and supplies is necessary to prevent respiratory infectious diseases.
