액션 영화는 전통적으로 남성의 장르였다. 이 같은 장르에서 여성은 주로 남성관객의 욕망과 판타지를 충족시키기 위한 방식으로 재현되어왔다. 페미니즘 영화 비평에서는 1960년대부터 등장하기 시작한 여전사, 혹은 여성 영웅의 이미지가 기존 남성 권력 속에서 형성되고 재편되어왔음을 지적한다. 본고에서는 <매드맥스:분노의 도로>를 통해 페미니스트 액션 영화의 가능성을 보고자 한다. 액션 영화 속 여성 캐릭터들은 남성적 세계 속에서 권력을 부여받는 여성이라는 점에서 우리 사회에 존재하는 여성성에 대한 이미지를 살펴볼 수 있는 좋은 공간이 되어주기 때문이다. <매드맥스:분노의 도로>는 기존 액션 영화들이 보여주던 남성 중심적 내러티브 구조에서 벗어나 있으며, 순종적이고 유약한 이미지와 여성으로서의 섹슈얼리티를 강조하던 여전사 이미지와는 다른 모습의 여성 캐릭터들을 보여준다. 이러한 맥락에서 <매드맥스: 분노의 도로>는 페미니즘 액션 영화의 탄생 가능성을 보여주고 있는 것으로 보인다. Action film has been traditionally considered as man’s genre. Action film has represented woman as an object to satisfy male viewer’s desire and fantasy. Feminist film criticism indicates that the image of female warrior or action heroine, who has appeared since 1960s, is constructed and revised in man’s existing power. This paper examines the possibility of feminist action film through 〈Mad Max: Fury Road〉. Female characters in action films are endowed with power in male-dominant world, which makes it possible to inspect image and feminity in society. 〈Mad Max: Fury Road〉 does not follow the male-centered narrative structure of traditional action films. It provides female characters different from submissive and weak ones and female warriors of sexuality. In this context, 〈Mad Max: Fury Road〉 shows the possibility of birth of feminist action film.

이 연구는 영화 〈아가씨〉가 재현하는 여성의 모습에 주목해 영화에 등장하는 여성 캐릭터들이 소외와 억압의 대상에서 전통적 젠더 이데올로기에 도전하기까지의 재현 방식을 분석한다. <아가씨>는 일제치하라는 시대적 상황, 가부장제도, 그리고 남성적 질서로 지배되는 폐쇄적 공간을 허물고 새로운 가능성을 모색하는 영화다. 본 연구는 <아가씨>의 전반적인 내러티브 구조와 함께 각 여성 인물들의 특성들을 살펴보고, 영화의 영상미학적 요소가 젠더 이데올로기를 전복시키는데 어떠한 역할로 작용하는지 알아보기 위해 다양한 영상미학적 요소들에 주목하여 텍스트 분석을 시행하였다. 분석 결과 첫째, 〈아가씨〉는 세 가지의 변증법적 서사 구성을 통해 남성의 서사를 여성의 서사로 전유하여 내러티브의 주도권을 여성에게 부여한다. 즉 여성 주인공들은 남성적 질서체계에서 부차적인 존재로 재현되거나 남성에 의해 타자화되지 않고 독립적 여성의 주체를 형상화한다. 둘째, 여성 캐릭터들은 남성 권력이 극대화된 공간에서 남성을 조롱하고 응징하는 권력을 얻음으로써 능동적 주체로 재현되며 남성 권력 및 가부장제는 붕괴된다. 셋째, 영화는 두 여성의 동성애적 정체성에 이의를 제기하지 않으며, 남성 중심의 이성애적 시각이 아닌 여성의 시선에서 동성애를 재현하며 신분의 차이를 벗어난 수평적 관계로서의 섹슈얼리티를 보인다. 더불어 두 여성의 로맨스와 섹슈얼리티는 시대적인 해방의 서사 속에서 긍정적 결합의 결과로 나타난다. 이러한 맥락에서 〈아가씨〉는 가부장제 사회에서 억압되고 소외되었던 여성에 관한 페미니즘적 재현을 통해 새로운 여성의 주체성 및 여성성의 형성을 가능케 한다. This Study focuses on the features of women enacted in the movie The Handmaiden and analyzes the representative methodologies of multiple female figures who were under alienation and oppression to challenge the traditional gender ideologies. Text analysis was conducted with careful observations of overall narrative structure, character characteristics, and visual aesthetic components. The major findings are as follows. First, the movie The Handmaiden uses the three dialectical narrative structures to appropriate male narratives to female narratives and give hegemony to female characters. Second, female characters are represented as active subjects by ridiculing and punishing men’s characters in an maximized male-dominance environment. Third, the movie does not propose objections to the homosexual identities of the two female characters rather visualizes homosexuality in women’s perspective than heterosexuality’s perspective. Also, the romance and sexuality of the two female characters are represented as the positive resolution in the narrative of epochal liberation. In such context, the movie Handmaiden seeks the new woman’s subjectivity and enables the formation of feminity under the feministic representation of women alienated and oppressed from the patriarch society.
