The present study was undertaken preliminarily to classify and describe the riverside vegetation in part of main stream of Nak-tong River near Andong, South Korea by methods of the ZM school of phytosociology. As a result the vegetation was divided into nineteen associations and communities belonging to eight classes. The vegetation units obtained in the present study were as follows: A. forest vegetation A-l Salicetea sachalinensis: Salicetum koreensio-chaenomeloides assoc. nov., included in Salicion koreensis all. nov., Salicetum koreensis assoc. nov., Hemipteletum davidii assoc. nov., Salicetum gracilistylae, Salicetum subfragilis, A-2 Rosetea multiflorae: Lycium Chinense community: B. (Grassland vegetation B-l Potamogetonetea: Nymphoidetum peltatae, Trapa japonica community, B-2 Lemnetea minoris: Spirodela polyrhiza-Lemna paucicostata community, B-3 Bidentetea tripartite:Polygonetum thunbergii, B-4 Pharagmitetea: Acoretum calami, Oenantho-Phalaridetum arundinaceae, Phragmitetum japonicae, Miscanthetum sacchariflori, Phragmites australis community, B-5 Artemisietea principis: Artemisietum selengensis assoc. nov., Lactuco indicae-Humuletum japonicae, Puerario lobatae-Humuletum japonici, B-6 Chenopodietea: Polygonum nodosum community. It is inferred that the endemic vegetation units in the Korean riverside vegetation are very rare, because most of the vegetation units obtained in the present study are common with those of Japan. Among the above vegetation units, a new alliance and four associations were established here newly. Based on the present phytosociological work, the general relation between the vegetation units and their environmental conditions was discussed from a viewpoint of the restoration ecology and nature conservation.
